Carl Froch headlining in the US on April 21st
Super middleweight Carl Froch will make his US debut against the highly respected Costa Rican Henry Porras on April 21st when he headlines an HBO Latino bill at the Avalon venue in Hollywood, Los Angeles in the first of a series of fights that will force WBO champion Joe Calzaghe to face him. "I’m going to spend the next few months doing exactly what I feel Calzaghe has spent his entire career running away from – going to the States and taking on highly ranked opponents," said British and Commonwealth champion Froch. “Then he will have no choice but to fight me. I have called Joe out several times, but he has either gone quiet or his daddy has tried to price him out of the market by asking for £1 million. But when I come back from America he will have nowhere to hide." Froch’s fight against Porras will be his first of three in America this year under his promoter Hennessy Sport’s recently formed strategic partnership with Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. "What other British fighters get the experience and exposure that fighting regularly in America brings?" added Froch. "Me and Junior Witter will be the first to benefit this year and we both fully intend to take full advantage.

Good on Froch. I've only seen him fight once (in Nottingham- 1st commonwealth defence? anyway) and I've not really seen him talk too much. But from what I make out he's hungry, confident, willing - eg. offering to take on magee at 1/2 hours notice - and fair do's to him going off to America.
Porras has fought a few names but seems beatable. And a headliner seems very good news indeed.
Chances of him getting a fight with sicknote tho, -10 in 10000000000000

The BBC really have a decent chance of getting some good boxers if they reversed their football-only policy.
They must be kicking themselves with Clinton Woods for one, who will surely get at least one juicy fight with Tarver/Johnson/sicknote.
Then there's Haye as well, who's just about to get interesting. And the pair of them in Rotherham basically offered their soul's to the BBC. They really should take them

it snot all over necessarily with the beeb they just will take it on a case by case basis.
below a repsonse form the beeb to an email i sent congratulating them on the clinton voerage.
Thank you for your latest e-mail,to which I have been asked to respond.
I am glad you enjoyed the boxing last Friday night on BBC1.We were
delighted that both Clinton Woods and David Haye performed so
well.Clinton in particular thoroughly deserved his moment of glory after
working so hard over the last few years.
While we have no immediate plans to show any more professional boxing we
are stepping up our coverage of the amateur game and in the next few
weeks you can look forward to seeing both the ABA Championships and the
4-Nations and hopefully one other top-level event if it is confirmed.
As far as the pro side is concerned we will look at any opportunities
that come up to cover major fights and see if they make sense for
us,both financially and in terms of scheduling.
Thank you for your continuing interest and support.

Well considering that their pathetically ill-thought out strategy of following amateur boxing only, a knee-jerk reaction based on the success of Amir Khan, who they should have known was always likely to turn professional, and the fact that ITV have poached his last amateur contest, denying them what would probably have been a potential 10 million plus viewing figure, I think they have little choice but to perform a volte-face and show some professional boxing.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:The Beeb might, believe it or not.The quiet man 2004 wrote:Do you think any British TV stations will pick up the fight?
The amateur code without Amir is a bit of a toothless dog, where's the bite?
I won't be surprised to see Woods, Froch, Witter and Haye all on the BBC.

It's true, how many fighters these days actually go to the states. Calzaghe should have done it years ago, but it's obviously never interested him. Fair play to Froch. I have a feeling he may fall short of greatness, but if he does, so what, so has Calzaghe, but for reasons largely of his own making.
It's the effort not the end result which matters most.

I think the fuss with his wife last year. Was the real reason he pulled out of Johnson fight rather than bad back imo. I think he got paid too much and got into a comfort zone. After the Mitchell fight he career should have gone upwards not downwards like it is. I dont think he actually fight Veit and may not fight again imo.

I hope calzaghe goes into the veit fight overconfident. The odds on Veit may be good re the initial demolition.- it could be more reward than risk betting on veit there... havin said that, calzaghe is a difficult fighter to beat. He is strong, tough and throws a lot of punches- outboxing him over 12 won't be easy, since slappy will probably match or better you on punch output. Plus veit has no punch anyway so is unlikely to stop slappy.

I'm still not keen on Froch dropping his hands all the time, he can get away with it when he's facing the likes of Hauge.
Porras is a good opponent , he looks as if he can take a punch, he's only been stopped in the late rounds by good class Super middles.
It will be 7 months since Froch's last fight , thats quite a time to be off and come in to face a quality opponent, i see him having some problems along the way but coming home on points.
