Kaylor vs. Christie

I just recently got a copy of this fight, and understand that it was quite a grudge match. Could anyone tell me a bit about the leadup to this fight?

I seem to recall they came to blows at either the pre-fight press conference or weigh-in.

The press conference dustup made the news all the way down here in Australia

Pity it was for the wrong reasons

Kaylor insulted Christie at a press conference, though it was never clear exactly what he said. Errol threw a punch and it ended up in a pavement brawl in front of the national press.

Next day it made all the back pages. Both were hauled in front of the BBFC and eventualy fined.

I think Kaylor resented all the press and hype Christie was getting at the time - The UK's answer to Ray Leonard....high praise from Manny Steward ( he sparred at the Kronk )....Britain's best middleweight prospect since Randy Turpin etc etc.

Kaylor obviously felt Errol hadn't paid his dues and felt hard done by.
But he was always a pretty agressive individual - a bit of the old Michael Gomez attitude when it came to squaring up....

Golden Boy Christie had already come unstuck, getting sensationaly stopped inside a round by Jose Seys. But it was put down to him getting caught cold by a much bigger lightheavyweight - Kaylor proved it was no fluke though.

Fantastic fight, one of the UK's best middleweight fights in years.

If you liked this one, get hold of Kaylor/Gumbs - another fight of the year,with Mark coming back from the brink, yet again.

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely try and get a copy of Kaylor/Gumbs. Any other fights from that time period you would recommend?

Ah memories.

This was in the days when fights caught the public imagination. I remember all the build up, the aggro beforehand and the fight.

Suspect we will not see its like again for good or bad.

A few years later, I saw Kaylor fighting on a UK/Sweden show at the Latchmere in front of about 150 people.

Kaylor vs Gumbs is also a great scrap as someone has already mentioned.

Unbelievable atmosphere - even from TV - so it must have been incredible to have been there. It's a fight that has everything.

I believe both Gumbs and Kaylor ended up in North America............................. though in widely different circumstances.

Another good one is John Conteh vs Saad Muhammad (1). Great fight to sit down and score.

Tony Sibson v Alan Minter is another classic of the time. Huge grudge match, with UK bragging rights on the line at middleweight.

While Sibbo was the rising prospect, Minter was still seen as a very dangerous guy.
Only a year ago he'd been world champ, and he'd come back from the Hagler disaster with a very close split decision loss to hard case Mustapha Hampsho, in a world title eliminator.

During the build up, Minter was scathing about Sibson, calling him a country bumpkin among other things.
And in a highly charged Wembley Arena, he tried to intimidate Sibson further, by walking over and putting his head right up to Sibson's face before the first bell.
Tony stared right back though...

It lived up to all the hype, and the result was up in the air right up until the 3rd round, when Sibson crashed home some almighty left hooks, leaving a dazed and battered Minter on the canvas, to be counted out for the only time in his career.

Hard to get hold of a copy of this fight - the BBC refused to air it because Minter had advertising on his trunks - but there are a few bootleg copies doing the rounds. Mine is B/W, and not great quality - but hopefully there's some good ones out there.

Sibson v Frankie Lucas is a brilliant fight too.

Ive got acopy of the Sibson - Minter constest, its in BW though.

I loved Sibson, my favourite British fighter, along with Clinton McKenzie.

Yes, them were the days!... for a while it seemed every year there was a big domestic Middleweight showdown... Minter vs Sibson, Kaylor vs Gumbs, Kaylor vs Sibson, Kaylor vs Christie, Kaylor vs Graham.... all great fights... Kaylor moved up and had a scortcher of a fight with Tom Collins at Light-heavy, and another good fight with James Cook at SuperMiddle..... but he was on the wane by then. Christie had it all except durability and I don't think he was ever the same fighter after the Kaylor fight.
I remember Sibson always refused to fight Graham saying he was a 'limbo dancer!'....

8) ...all in all though Herol was the best of all of them I think.
