War rens New TV Deal to be announced today apparently!!!

Post by Jeff Thomas »

First show Sept 4th

Burns - Martinez and

Simpson - Smith

Supported by the olympians, big rumours of it being a new Virgin Sports channel. :box:

Could be good news.

I doubt there be another sports channel launched. Virgin recently sold most of its channels it owned to sky.

No offence but if virgin were going to launch a spots channel I think something bigger than Warren stable would be used to launch it. If I am wrong I have egg on my face.

Since the Sky purchase of the Virgin Media channels, a rumour of a new sports channel has been doing the rounds (as has them changing the model of Bravo).

.....is fWank and Audley largely responsible for making boxing the marginal sport it is today (in Britain)?

If they had not delivered the tripe they did for their tv pay-masters .. and instead delivered decent competitive matches instead of the prospect v journeyman with a 98% chance of knowing who will win as soon as the fight is announced ... then do you think the tv people would now not be scared of getting stung again? and boxing would be on one of the big channels??

just a thought...

Not really, the tv execs should have some quality control of their own in place.

Agreed :TU:

But why should they have to? Surely the best promotion for the sport is making the best fights available .. not padding records??

I'm confused.
Is the announcement that Wazza has a deal for Saturday shows on Sky - one each month, as is being stated on another site ?
If so fine and dandy - but not as radical as many were expecting.

Yes, that seems to be pretty much it. No new channel.

On the bright side Sky are showing the big JMM-Diaz bill live

I think its a great deal. For years he has wanted to go back to saturdays and now he has got it.Its by far a better day for big shows for lots of reasons.Twelve quality Saturday shows would be great.

Mickey,
Knowing how Sky are with their quality control on bill headers, do you think his current stable could fill 12 dates ?
I expect the bill header will have to be Euro / British / Commonwealth.
Could this by why he's bidding big for mandatories involving other people's fighters, eg Macklin / Barker ?

Ricky Burns gets a home shot at a world title when he challenges Roman Martinez for the WBO super-featherweight title in Glasgow's Kelvin Hall on September 4.
Burns, who hails from nearby Coatbridge, is the WBO No. 1 but has struggled to pin down Martinez to a date and boxed only once in the last 12 months: an eight-round decision over Dewsbury battler Youssef Al Hamidi in London last month. Martinez has boxed only twice but both were successful defences of the WBO title he won from Dagenham's Nicky Cook here last year and thus different level.
The rangy, sharp-hitting Martinez found some big punches to finish Cook in the fourth round in Manchester and, back home in Puerto Rico, took out both his challengers. He brings over an unbeaten 25-fight record, 15 by stoppage. The man tagged as "Rocky" ought to loom as a formidable champion but for the fact that Cook hurt and nearly floored Martinez in the first round and made him look quite ordinary up to the finish. Burns, who has won his last 13 fights since Leeds puncher Carl Johanneson outscored him over 12 rounds in Leeds, is a lean counterpuncher in the Cook mould and will fancy his chances of denting that Martinez chin in the historic Kelvin Hall, scene of so many of Jim Watt's successful fights as world lightweight champion 30 years ago. Burns has lost only to Johanneson and to fellow Scot and former WBO super-featherweight champion Alex Arthur in 30 outings.
