BN In brief Fighting in the UK is a ‘Dream’
KASSIM OUMA wants to box in
Britain. He may have held the IBF lightmiddleweight
belt and challenged WBC
and WBO middleweight king Jermain
Taylor, but Ouma has decided to add the
Commonwealth title to his collection.
“I have been interested since a long
time ago,” Kassim insisted. “I’m from a
Commonwealth country so I want to
be a Commonwealth champion.”
It would be a change of direction for
Ouma but then his career has been on
a downward slide in recent years. In
his last six fights, he’s lost five. But the
31-year-old is desperate to get back to
winning ways.
“I’ll fight anybody right now.
Anything that’s there for me. I just
need a fight,” he said.
“I’d like to fight all over the world,
especially in the UK. I’ve got my
fans in the UK, people that have been
supporting my career. They’ve been
supporting me for a long, long time and
[I’d like to] go put up a fight for them.”
The plan isn’t for a flying visit either.
Ouma’s manager Eddie Gonzales
anticipates bringing his fighter here for
his next three or four contests. “UK
fans are diehards, that’s what we love.
The way you guys are with soccer and
your sports, you guys are very
passionate,” Gonzales observed.
Ouma reckons he’s equally
comfortable at light-middle or
middleweight. When told that Martin
Murray has a date, July 16, for a vacant
Commonwealth middleweight title
fight, Kassim was happy to volunteer
before Peter Mitrevski Jnr took the job..
“I’m ready tomorrow,” he declared. “If
he has nobody, I’d like to fight him.”
Intriguingly Anthony Farnell, who
trains Matthew Hall, contacted Gonzales
by e-mail. Boxing News has seen the
exchange in which Farnell suggests
the two boxers meet for the lightmiddleweight
version of the same title
(he also notes that “my fighter will put
Kassim to sleep”). Craig Watson
currently wears Hall’s old belt, but he
normally fights at the weight below.
Ouma’s team is frustrated at the
decisions that have gone against him.
Fighting in Britain appeals because
they believe he’ll be treated fairly here.
The fighter particularly objects to his
last result, when the judges gave Vanes
Martirosyan a wide points verdict. “I
beat him but it just didn’t go my way,”
Kassim raged. “He will do well but he
can’t fight people of my calibre.”
Long suspected of being attracted
to the good life beyond the ropes,
Ouma has rededicated himself to his
profession. “I’m really hungry right
now,” he said, “I’ve got anger.
“I still want to win another ‘world’
title. I want to make history again.
Winning the championship was really
good. But I’ve still got more. I still
haven’t reached my goal yet.”
Ouma tells John Dennen he wants the Commonwealth crown
TURNAROUND: After winning one
of his first 10, Michael is on a roll
‘I WANT TO MAKE
HISTORY AGAIN. I’M
REALLY HUNGRY’

Look mate, not been rude or anything but no-ones arsed. You've made a dick of yourself on here and now I doubt anyone on here will be interested in dealing with you. Well done. Put that in the magazine article.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but Ouma was shot in the stomach and ankle in a drive-by shooting in Florida in 2002, losing some of his intestines. His assailant, a 21-year-old who used to work with Ouma at a steakhouse, went on the run but later gave himself up to US Marshals in North Carolina. He pleaded not guilty in court and was acquitted of all charges.
