Haye Laughs Off Harrison Fight
Haye Laughs Off Harrison Fight
The WBA world heavyweight champion, a title that shot him from being a man unheralded beyond the confines of the sport of boxing to being one of the most instantly recognisable faces in Britain, was in Derby last night to meet the fans at a sportsmen's dinner at the Heritage Hotel....
....Now aged 29, Haye says he intends to stick to a promise he made to himself many years ago that he would not box beyond the age of 30 and that means he has his eyes on blockbuster fights only from here on.
That does not, he says, include an all-British showdown with former Olympic champion Audley Harrison, despite many reports to the contrary.
"I haven't talked to Audley's team, to be honest. I've read it in numerous newspapers but I don't take any notice of that.
"I looked on one of the boxing websites the other day and they even had a date for the fight. That made me laugh.
"At the moment, we're talking to the Klitschkos, trying to make that deal. Audley's just trying to get some headlines.
"If, by some miracle, I ended up in the same ring as him, I think everybody with half a brain cell would know what the result would be. I would go out there and mince him."

Re: Haye Laughs Off Harrison Fight
I'd like to see Haye fight David Tua (the guy who's lying on a beach in samoa getting fat!) - Tua would knock him out and finally shut his annoying big mouth - Who has Haye even fought to think that people actually rate him let alone listen to his pointless bravado - Look at there records they don't even compare, except Haye took 5 rounds longer to knockout a washed-up John Ruiz!!! Go the Tuaman!!!

Well if Haye is still wanting to fight the Klitshckos next - that is refreshing.
No smoke without fire though - why would that internet site (boxrec) -= list the fight date as official ?

Perhaps I'm cynical but that last part, re the "mincing", tells me the fight is very much on.FLINT ISLAND wrote:Well if Haye is still wanting to fight the Klitshckos next - that is refreshing.

He was forced into reitrement for his age I think
Was very forceful in the Bruno V Lewis fight - asserting his authority on two big men with a grudge against each other was a tough job.

Yeah I reckon Harrison is waiting in the wings in case the Klits are proving too difficult to deal withJamesH wrote:Perhaps I'm cynical but that last part, re the "mincing", tells me the fight is very much on.FLINT ISLAND wrote:Well if Haye is still wanting to fight the Klitshckos next - that is refreshing.

Haye living the dream but for about one more year, he insists
DAVID Haye is loving his chance to live the schoolboy dream – but not, he says, for very much longer.
The WBA world heavyweight champion, a title that shot him from being a man unheralded beyond the confines of the sport of boxing to being one of the most instantly recognisable faces in Britain, was in Derby last night to meet the fans at a sportsmen's dinner at the Heritage Hotel.
It is fair to assume he is not completely uncomfortable with the attention an event like this brings.
Having worked so hard for so long to reach the peak, he deserves his chance to take deep breaths of the rarefied air of fame.
But Haye, who won the title against the Russian giant Nikolay Valuev in Nuremberg last November, said even he underestimated how much it would change his life.
"I knew it would be a bit different being heavyweight champion compared to when I was cruiserweight champion," he said.
"I thought it might double but it's probably increased 10 or 15-fold.
"Kids and old ladies know who you are. That's strange because I always thought boxing was a minority sport and only males who were big into boxing would know who the champion was.
"Even people in boxing didn't know my first world title fight at cruiserweight was on TV.
"I won the title, the biggest fight of my life, and nobody really knew about it.
"When you are heavyweight champion, you go on Jonathan Ross and Paul Grady and all these prime time TV shows and that gets you seen by everybody. That's nice.
"I've always dreamed of being world heavyweight champion and always believed one day I would and it's a reality now.
"When I was four or five, maybe younger than that, I used to watch the boxing with my mum and my dad and my uncle because they were big boxing fans. I knew then what the heavyweight title brought.
"When I was a kid at school, there was Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno and, watching these guys, I wanted to be the biggest, strongest guy out there.
"Every kid wants to be the hardest in the playground but the heavyweight champion was like the hardest in the world. There was nothing you could compare to that.
"I wanted to prove to everybody that I was the best and to be heavyweight champion, that was the way to prove it."
Now aged 29, Haye says he intends to stick to a promise he made to himself many years ago that he would not box beyond the age of 30 and that means he has his eyes on blockbuster fights only from here on.
The target is either Vitali Klitschko, the WBC champion, or his brother Wladimir, the IBF and WBO champion, but Haye says he knows he will have to face both in time to get the full recognition he seeks.
"That's the plan," he added.
"The way I see it, I've got to beat both of them at some stage. They have different strengths and different assets, so I'd have to treat each fight differently but both are fighters I feel I could beat.
"Even if I was to beat both of them, there would be someone else. There always is.
"Then you'd have to beat him and there'd be another one coming through, no matter what you do.
"I've always said I would retire at the end of next year. I started boxing when I was 10 and said then I would retire from boxing when I was 30 and that's still the time restraint I've set myself.
"I know it's all been said before. I heard Oscar de la Hoya say a very similar thing and I heard that Bernard Hopkins swore to his mother on her death bed that he wouldn't box past the age of 40 and here he is, at 47 or so, and he's calling me out!
"So far, I've achieved all the goals I said I would and now I just need some big fights to stamp my place in boxing history in the next year and a bit.
"I've got to be very strategic about the next two or three fights I have."

Re: Haye Laughs Off Harrison Fight
So fights with the likes of Ruiz, Valuev, Barrett, Maccarinelli (in his day), Bonin and Carl Thompson don't deserve respect?yid14 wrote:I'd like to see Haye fight David Tua (the guy who's lying on a beach in samoa getting fat!) - Tua would knock him out and finally shut his annoying big mouth - Who has Haye even fought to think that people actually rate him let alone listen to his pointless bravado - Look at there records they don't even compare, except Haye took 5 rounds longer to knockout a washed-up John Ruiz!!! Haye has proven himself and his adaptability when ever he has been called to. His conditioning and fitness are world class and so is his technique and power for being a smaller heavy.
I do agree Tua would and interesting fight, interesting it might be, but worthless to Haye who is world champion, in the driving seat and wants only super fights for world titles in his last couple years before he retires. Fair play and intelligent business head.
Anyway, Tua has a fight with Barrett lined up, lets see how Tue performs in that in comparison to Haye. If Tua takes Barrett out, he deserves a top 10, that would put him rite in-line for a crack at Haye. Could only be a couple fights away and if Haye hasn;t had his super fight by then, he will have to take some mandatory defences before he retires.
Re: Haye Laughs Off Harrison Fight
i had a suspicion that it was just sky and hearn who wanted it. and this seems to confirm what i thought, that haye wants vitali as the next big fight. going by what he's said, he seems to want 2 or 3 more fights, and ones that count.
of course, things can go wrong such as a defeat or a controversy, which can mess with these plans.

Re: Haye Laughs Off Harrison Fight
Why would Haye deserve respect for fighting Bonin or a 37 year old shot Barrett for that matter? Why would a World Heavyweight champ deserve respect for fighting a 38 year completely past it Ruiz? This fight was mandatory and the other fights were reasonable fights to get him used to the HW scene but no great achievements by any stretch of the imagination. Now beating the two Klits sure would be an achievement even though big Klit is getting on a bit. I hope the fights are made soon as I just can't wait. All this, he'll be fighting Audley; oh no he won't; oh yes he will is getting a little irritating now. BTW does anyone know why Bonin was fighting for the World Youth HW title at over 35 years of age?terrez wrote:So fights with the likes of Ruiz, Valuev, Barrett, Maccarinelli (in his day), Bonin and Carl Thompson don't deserve respect?yid14 wrote:I'd like to see Haye fight David Tua (the guy who's lying on a beach in samoa getting fat!) - Tua would knock him out and finally shut his annoying big mouth - Who has Haye even fought to think that people actually rate him let alone listen to his pointless bravado - Look at there records they don't even compare, except Haye took 5 rounds longer to knockout a washed-up John Ruiz!!! Re: Haye Laughs Off Harrison Fight
Hearn says he has met Hayes people once already with talk of fighting Audley .. yet Haye says they have never met.
Haye says the K-Brothers are difficult to do a deal with. Is this because Haye is pricing himself out and asking for ridiculous options rather than the general assumption here its the K-Brothers demanding the imposible?
It really is quite baffling. Since when were the K-Brothers difficult to do a deal with .. can anybody give any examples?
Wasn`t Vitali prepared to come to hayes back yard to do the fight ... for Haye to pull out yet again

Nobody has even come close to taking Tua,and he has boxed a lot better, bigger punching fighters than Haye will ever be.If they ever did meet(highly unlikely),i seriously doubt Haye would try bombing him out and opt to box cautiously instead, like he did with Valuev.HomeOfBritishBoxing wrote:x2 haye would take tua out in a few rounds.J wrote:![]()

Re: Haye Laughs Off Harrison Fight
Why didnt he hammer the fat and old Ruiz then?It took him 9 rounds against a man Tua did in 19 seconds!Look,im not suggesting Tua would pose problems for Haye, but you are talking about a man who comes up frequently in best chins ever debates!I think its disrespectful to suggest anyone would hammer him.Like i said,Booth and Haye would know all this and wouldnt even load up on him.
Tua,a few years ago would have been all wrong for David.
Tua,a few years ago would have been all wrong for David.
Re: Haye Laughs Off Harrison Fight
Why would Haye fight Tua anyway? Anyone who thinks Haye should KO Tua in a few rounds is not being realistic. Haye has done nothing in his HW career to suggest he would KO someone like Tua with a concrete chin inside a few rounds. Indeed, Tua is not what he used to be but it took Haye 9 rounds to stop Ruiz who is even older than Tua and softer in the chin department. Haye will always have problems against any fighter who is a huge puncher and has an excellent chin. He may win every round but he will always be worried about getting hit with that one shot that equalises everything and will therefore box a very smart and cautious fight. Haye should never fight Tua as he will always be a risk without any reward. Doesn't make any business sense at all.
