Peak for peak.. interesting.
I shall ponder on this one.
It would be a fun one to watch.

Re: Mercer vs Tua
I don't think Mercer's conditioning was under-rated at all, but he did have 1) A great chin and 2) A left jab and that equals beating Tua anyday of the week. Hell, Rahman showed you could beat Tua with just an average chin and a left jab.

Didn't Mercer drop the fight with Fergusson?BarryWashington wrote:Mercer would dominate Tua.
Mercer beat Cooper (Bert), Damiani, Morrison (Tommy), and Ferguson.
He also lost closely contested fights against Holyfield, Holmes and barely lost to Lewis in '96.
Tua got dominated by Byrd, Lewis and Rahman twice (although Tua did get the TKO in the first fight he was well behind on scorecards).
All Tua has/had is/was a left a hook. Everything else was average (I'll give him credit and say his chin was decent).
A peak Mercer had underrated conditioning, a great jab, was lethal with both hands and had an iron chin/jaw.
Assuming it's a 12 round fight I would say Mercer wins 9-3/10-2.
A lot of people say Ray gets overrated with time but; I disagree. I think Ray was very dominant but lacked discipline. All he needed to do was stay in the 215-225 lb weight range and he was golden. Anything over that and it was skeptical.
Re: Mercer vs Tua
Mercer's chin was just as good and he was a more complete fighter than Tua. I think he wins a competitive fight on points.

Gotcha, Barry.
When are your mob going to aim up in the Cup, anyway? Life-&-death with New Zealand, I mean really...most unbecoming

Re: Mercer vs Tua
I think Ferguson bested Mercer twice, but on thebig stage when he was in the mood - Holyfield & Lewis he was a beastly fighter.
I think he got jobbed vs Lewis, Lewis was HBO's Golden Boy heavy at the time and he was never going to lose a decision in 96 to Ray Mercer, who everyone was done with. Mercer in his very next fight benefitted from a dodgy decision over Tim Witherspoon.
Ah, some great heavyweight scraps in the 90s.

Re: Mercer vs Tua
I just have never seen the huge controversy on the Lewis-Mercer fight. I scored it twice years ago, coming up with 6-3-1, & then later 6-4 --- both to Lewis. Do people really have Mercer ahead by a wide enough margin to see him robbed? I can't believe that.
Re: Mercer vs Tua
I for some reason think that this fight would in some ways be like
Mercer - Cooper, Witherspoon in the sense that we will see Mercer
'at his best' as far as us fans go.
Tua will bomb away, mix it up, trade and try for the KO. Mercer will
in kind reply with his brutally fundamental style and no doubt take it
all on the chin like a good sport and then show every one, why he
stayed near the top for so long.
I pick mercer by decision. But it will be a good fight. I say come the
end of 12, Mercer is ahead but not by a great deal. Blood will be in the
urine and Mercer will be swollen faced, but Tua will be ill advised from
any wedding photos after this one as well.
Id like to watch this fight. Give me Mercer though.
