Re: John Duddy no answers for a rejuvinated Julio Cesar Chavez
John Duddy 'Destroyed' by Chavez Jr
Ireland’s John Duddy 29-2 (KO 1) and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr 41-0-1 (KO 30) fought the fight of their lives as Chavez Jr confounded his critics and break the heart of 1,000’s of Irish fight fans by demolishing the ‘Derry Destroyer’ over twelve rounds to retain his unbeaten record and collect the WBC Silver middleweight title in front on a packed Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas on June 27.
Cesar Chavez Jr has the unenviable tasks of attempting to fill the shoe of his three weight world champion father and all round Mexican icon Julio Snr, but unlike many before him, the son show heart in his latest effort to match the achievements of the father and did not wilt under the pressure of the dogged and determined Irishman.
Duddy came into the fight as heavy underdog. Few fancied the New York based fighters chances of getting a decision at the Alamodome and pointed Cesar Chavez family’s close association with the WBC organisation and the fight between Cesar Chavez Jr’s father and Pernell Whitaker almost 17 years ago at the very same venue. Many ringside observers at the fight felt that Whitaker was robbed of the WBC welterweight title when the fight was judged a draw which meant JCC Snr retained his unbeaten record.
Duddy’s performance’s since the Yori Boy Campas fight had been eratic and which John Duddy turn's up to a fight was anyone’s guess – it could be the old school throwback slugger, the box fighter or the cagey counter puncher. At times it appeared to some that Duddy was almost actively trying to scupper his own career, in his fight with Walid Smichet all he had to do was convincingly overcome the Canada based Tunisian to earn a money spinning fight with Kelly Pavlik - he failed! Another title shot beckoned if he beat Ohioan journeyman Billy Lyell – he failed!
His dreadful and plodding performance against Lyell highlighted the lack of a cohesive plan of attack as he was uncomfortably caught between styles. Although he notched up three straight victories since the defeat to Lyall they were in reality uninspiring.
What Duddy’s career needed was a tonic and that remedy was to be a St. Patrick’s Day showdown at the Garden with Mexico’s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr or as main support to Miguel Cotto and Yori Foreman at Yankee Stadium. A spanner was then thrown in the works when Cesar Chavez Jr received a ban for using an illegal substance to aid with weight making.
This would sound as a death knell for most fighters careers, but not if your second name is Chavez. JCC Jr switched trainer to join the legendary Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym and was handed a prime PPV slot as the headline fighter on a stadium card – not bad eh!
Duddy, used to partisan Irish American crowd in his adopted home city of New York face 20,000 vociferous Mexican fans at the Alamodome who were all there to ensure the Cesar Chavez Jr bandwagon kept rolling on.
With an entertaining undercard, which included a points victory for Marco Antonio Barrera, complete the main events formalities got underway with ‘Ten Bells’ rang in memory of those murdered in 1972 on Bloody Sunday in Derry, Northern Ireland, one of the victims being Duddy’s uncle Jackie Duddy.
Sheena Mullin, adorned in the jersey of the Oak Leaf County, sang the Irish national anthem and it was respectfully observed by all, however, the numerical advantages in favour of the Mexican fans were clearly evident when the Mexican anthem struck up.
A montage of Duddy highlights were then flashed up on the stadiums big screen as an eerie hush fell over the arena floor. U2’s Unforgettable Fire rang out and a focused Duddy strolled purposefully toward the ring. The booing slowly increased until a similar montage of Chavez beemed out and with this the crowd were sent it a deafeningly frenzy which lasted until referee Jon Schorle brought the fighters together for their final instructions.

wanted duddy to win but he an average european level fighter at best.
Re: John Duddy no answers for a rejuvinated Julio Cesar Chavez
One of the fights of the year so far, in my opinion. Really enjoyed it.
How Duddy stayed on his feet I don't know. Chavez Jr caught him with some very sweet, powerful shots.
I suppose it was good to see that Chavez Jr can actually box. I thought he was pretty impressive.
Chavez Jr/Martinez should be a pretty good fight if the Chavez Jr of last night/this morning turns up

Does this mean that Chevez fights Martinez next?Terrrrry wrote:One of the fights of the year so far, in my opinion. Really enjoyed it.

Re: John Duddy no answers for a rejuvinated Julio Cesar Chavez
i wish. martinez would box his effing ears off and get a big payday.
unfortuately the WBC put their silver belt up for grabs for last night's winner, so chavez jr can do what he wants, call himself a "world champion", have a marketable rematch or fight miguel cotto.
meanwhile, every middleweight prospect in the world queues up for sebastian sylvester, or a vacant belt vs a fellow prospect. someone should step up and fight martinez.

Last night was an eliminator for a shot at Martinez for his WBC middleweight title, wasn't it?
Although it was dressed up as a supposed WBC title fight.

Was it all one-way traffic? Did he make Chavez look like a world beater or was it a close affair?
I was working and missed this one.....

It was quite tight in the first 5/6 but, after that, some big Chavez Jr shots took a lot of the power out of Duddy's shots.Captain Hook wrote:Was it all one-way traffic? Did he make Chavez look like a world beater or was it a close affair?

Duddy rocked Chavez Jr in about the 4th/5th, but he recovered well and outclassed Duddy for the rest of the fight.
Jr looked much better, fitter and much more on the money than I've ever seen him before.

Come hell or high water his advisors want to manoeuvre a World Title for Chavez.
The WBC are desperate to get him there - all down to daddy.
He is however very beatable.
He wont face Martinez. Everyone knows he'll get anhialated.
He is struggling badly with the weight to do LMW.
How about Chavez v Rhodes for WBC ?
I think that's a long shot because of the weight issue.
For the same reason I think the Cotto fight is a long shot.
Maybe he'll just rake it in, and defend his silver belt against B Class fighters as before ?

Would love to see Macklin v Lee, the winner taking on Barker.....
Or Barker v Lee and the winner taking on Macklin....
Any combination of the three would be entertaining, they're all good value for money.

Pretty disrespectful to be honest.
The guy is a warrior and puts it all out there in every fight, he lacks power and speed but by jove does the guy leave plenty of himself in the ring every fight.
If he retires tomorrow his fans will always love him - last night a genuinely a fight of the year contender and as for manufactured, well Duddy's jaw is definitely manufactured.
A picture paints a 1,000 words.

You need to watch a bit more of him, he's good. Never in a bad fight. Not everyone can be Floyd Mayweather. Mate, people on here havebeen trying to tell you for a long time that Duddy is simply not a top fighter. A media contrived average fighter, blown up into something he is not to exploit the pockets of the Irish Americans.slapbangwhallop wrote:Gutted but I haveto say that Duddy cant handle the pace anymore and was totally outworked.

The Chavez fight simply proved this to be the case.
