What happens if Dwight Muhammad Qawi fought...?

Post by kovit »

I would like to know what happens if former world light-heavyweight and cruiserweight champion Dwight Muhammad Qawi ever fought these fighters in his 1980s era:

vs. Marvin Johnson
vs. Yaqui Lopez
vs. Eddie Mustafa Muhammad
vs. Dennis Andries
vs. Bobby Czyz
vs. Leslie Stewart
vs. Virgil Hill
vs. Donnie Lalonde
vs. Jeff Harding
vs. Iran Barkley
vs. Thomas Hearns
vs. Mate Parlov
vs. Carlos DeLeon
vs. Marvin Camel
vs. Alfonso Ratliff

Wow, lots of fights there Kovit mate.... Qawi vs Marvin Johnson would have been a real classic.... I'd probably go for Dwight to win by points or a late stoppage... think he'd be too strong for Marvin, though it would be a real war and I certainly wouldn't give Marvin no chance.
Dwight vs Yaqui Lopez is another great fight that never happened... again I'd lean towards Quawi winning a close war... probably on points.
Those were the days (70s-80s) when the Lightheavies had a load of great fighters.... it was probably one of the most talented and exciting divisions around at the time. 8)

Too many to go into depth so I shall keep it very brief
kovit wrote:vs. Marvin Johnson
Tough fight but edge towards Qawi on points or maybe late stoppage.
kovit wrote:vs. Yaqui Lopez
Another tough greulling fight with plenty of give and take but again I see Qawi winning on points.
kovit wrote:vs. Eddie Mustafa Muhammad
Qawi has too much pressure and too high a workrate and wins on points.
kovit wrote:vs. Dennis Andries
Tough, brutal, mauling fight but Qawi wins by TKO9
kovit wrote:vs. Bobby Czyz
Qawi wins TKO8
kovit wrote:vs. Leslie Stewart
Qawi TKO KO5
kovit wrote:vs. Virgil Hill
Hill was a smart Boxer and could give Qawi the run around for a few rounds but I feel Qawi would eventually carch up with him. Qawi TKO10
kovit wrote:vs. Donnie Lalonde
Qawi KO6
kovit wrote:vs. Jeff Harding
Tough brawl but Qawi wins TKO9
kovit wrote:vs. Iran Barkley
Another tough slugefest but Qawi by TKO10
kovit wrote:vs. Thomas Hearns
Hearns has the ability to outbox Qawi but could he do that for 15 rounds? I am not so sure. Hearns also has power that must always be respected even by the teak tough Qawi. But I can't help thinking that if Barkley could out hustle a 175lbs Hearns so could Qawi. Qawi on points.

Would not have the power to worry Qawi. Qawi TKO5
kovit wrote:vs. Carlos DeLeon
Qawi wins on points.
kovit wrote:vs. Marvin Camel
Qawi TKO6
kovit wrote:vs. Alfonso Ratliff
Qawi TKO5

In my opinion at 175lbs only the very elite all timers beat the Camdem Buzzsaw.

All you have to do is get ahold of a tape of a (slightly) passed his prime Qawi in a 15 round war with Holyfield at cruiserweight to get an idea of how awsome he was a few years earlier at 175.

Qawi was indeed class and a highly exciting fighter to watch, I recommend watching any of his Light-Heavyweight fights or early Cruiserweight fights. His stoppage over Leon Spinks was truely brutal although Spinks was faded and tight at the weight to be fair.

Apparently Qawi used to spar with 'Bad' Bennie Briscoe I would have paid good money to watch those sparrins sessions.

Joe mate i love Qawi but some of these numbers look like they've been plucked out of thin air just because you think they look good.

Qawi stops Hill in 10? Who the frick EVER stopped Hill?? RJJ with 1 crunching body shot. Old headhunter Qawi doesnt bring the firepower to take out Hill.

Qawi beats Hearns??? Ever seen Spinks/Qawi. Watch what happens when our boy Qawi gets hit hard & early. Does a Tua-styled shut down job.

Alfonso Ratliff taken out in 5?? What the hell?? By Qawi????? Mate you ever seen Ratliff? He was a 6'5'' heavyweight-sized fella. It took Tim Witherspoon 7 rds & some seriously brutal heavyweight shots to stop Ratliff, 10 rds & a monstrous right from another big strong guy in Pinklon Thomas, only guy who ever waxed big Alfonso in quick fashion was TYSON. And these guys are also all future HEAVYWEIGHT champs & Alfonso hung tough with two of em.

Please explain where you get these predictions from.

Hi Overhand hope you are well. Those numbers were not plucked out of the air because I thought they look good, that's not my style. Bit uncalled for that mate.

Anyway back to the fights....

Fair point, but did Hill ever face anyone of the class of Qawi at Light-Heavyweight? Old man Hearns maybe, who beat Hill. But the rest of his less that H.O.F material opponents were not capable of putting the type of heat on Hill as Qawi could. Hill seemed to freeze (IMO) against the faded Hearns so I would not be shocked if he froze against the intimidating prime Qawi. A 10th round stoppage (note not KO) may have been a little harsh on Hill. I can of course except that, but I still pick Qawi to win either by late stoppage or points.

Spinks vs Qawi is also a fair point. BUT the way I was looking at it was that at 175lbs Hearns was a faded Welter/Middleweight force where Spinks at 175lbs was an all time great in his prime and a mutch more natural Light-Heavyweight. So therefore I was thinking that if Barkley could outhustle a Light-Heavy Hearns then so could Qawi. In my defence in my original post I did note Hearns power is always to be respected.

As for Alfonso Ratliff, once against I take your point about only quality Heavyweights beat him (Which I assume is your general point?) however the other way you could look at it is that Alfonso Ratliff got beat when he fought ANYONE of real Word class apart from the irratic and lazy Deleon.

I just don't rate Ratliff that highly and think a motivated and in shape Qawi would break him down, although we could of course argue all day about how long it woulld take him to do that.

Well there are my fuller explinations. :TU:

I'd have to agree. I'd take Qawi to beat any of those guys you mentioned, although there are some terrific matchups in there.

Qawi was one hell of a fighter. Watch the Qawi-Holyfield fight of 1986 sometime and you'll see why he's in the Hall of Fame now. I'd liked to have seen him fight Michael Spinks at cruiserweight myself. As I recall, Spinks was pulling an Arturo Gatti in his fights and coming in about 195 pounds at the end of his light-heavy title reign. He sure didn't have any problem moving up to heavyweight.

What about 'Prince' Charles Williams?

I think Tommy Hearns would have KO'd him & Virgil Hill would have outpointed him, but I'd fancy him against the others.

Do you really think the 175lbs version of Hearns could have KO'd Qawi? Qawi was never stopped at that weight and mixed it with some very heavy punchers, and by the time Hearns got up to Light-Heavyweight he was a faided force (in my opinion.

Fair point.

I was thinking because Hearns was so much taller & Qawi being short & stocky, he might be a sucker for a Tommy Hearns overhand Righ shot, but you're right, Qawi was tough & chins usually beat punchers, although Duran might disagree with me!!!!
