Salam voted into prizefighter!
Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
McGuire out. Sam Horton and Patrick Mendy complete the line-up.
Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
Salam will win this and win it clearly...

He's on trial for a sickening sex attack - Google it.
Innocent until proven guilty, I agree but it's not pleasant reading.

Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
Innocent until proven guilty and all that, but ideally there would be an outcome either way before Salam features in a high profile televised event

Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
Bit confused here - am I right in thinking that the jury trial is on at the moment?
Is he proposing that if he is acquitted (assuming the trial is over in time) he will just show up at York Hall and fight on wednesday night? That is pretty unusual fight preparation.
When Spencer proposed him he must have known about the trial dates or at the very least that he was on a warned list for this period?

Dunno. I didn't until Boxing Chat mentioned it, just googled it and there it was
Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
On the basis that the report today is of him giving evidence I would presume that they are banking on the trial being over by tomorrow.

Don't know mate. Personally I hope there's nothing in it and it all just goes away, my only interest is in the reputation of the sport.

It was in BN when the alledged incident happened and has been briefly mentioned on here since. It doesnt look good on his management team if they knew it was going to clash. The trial date will have been set a while ago.Prizefighter doesnt really need this, its Sky's flagship boxing event(whatever we think of it) and is seen as a family friendly, casual, exciting programme.
Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
Quite interested that just about nobody is prepared to make any further comment about this.
We are not talking about a boxer in trouble who may or may not be able to fight at a promotion in a few months time - we are talking about a boxer who is currently standing trial before a judge and jury for a sexual crime whom it is proposed will fight on wednesday night live on SKY.

Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
My concern is that he wins (and he is more than capable of doing so) and is found guilty what an embarrassment for everyone involved that would be. IMO the Board have a difficult choice as he HAS NOT been found guilty of anything so cannot really be stopped from competing. However, the Board do have a rule that says that can prevent any contest that in their opinion is not "in the interests of Boxing" - maybe to protect the reputation of the sport and prizefighter they need to take a view on this and maybe draft in a reserve.
I agree with Glyn Leach, in these difficult times, this could be another potential Black Eye for our sport and with further turn the TV execs and punters off.
I saw this in a paper on Saturday in cafe, surprised no one else did. Mind you I think it was the Sport and the report was quite graphic.

Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
It's a very tricky situation. On the one hand, I'd never wish to deny a fighter an opportunity or a payday, but on the other the interests of one fighter should not be placed above those of the sport in general. The timing of this is extremely unfortunate for all concerned.
Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
As I understand it the prosecution are still making their closing speech to the jury (Defence speech and Judge's summing up still to come) and the weigh in is at 2.00.
What do the rules say about a boxer who does not attend the weigh in under these circumstances?

Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
From what i have heard there is an extra boxer at the weigh in (anthony fitzgerald ) so i think they may be getting ready to replace him.
Re: Salam voted into prizefighter!
Carl Drake in - Tony Salam out as I understand it

If they knew Salam was on trial - which they should've and if they didn't he should've made them aware - then they should have never offered him a place. I dont know how the law works with an athlete but I'm pretty sure the judge couldv'e satopped him appearing on TV incase it affected the jury.

There's money to be made here for the gamblers among us. The bookies didnt update their prices for about 3 or 4 days after Quigley dropped out, i lumped on Sam Horton at 18/1 and he's down to 6 now, you can get 5/1 for 2nd favourite Mendy.
They still have Salam as massive favourite, wishing i took Paul David now at 16/1 but he's still available at 6 if you're quick.
