Bowe Vs Mercer

Post by Slapsie Maxie »

Just found an old copy of KO from 1989 which had these two as " The Future of the HW Division"

The article is very interesting with interviews with them both ( around the time Mercer beat Occasio ) and had them lined up to fight in 1990.

I have not checked their stats, but don't think they ever did fight? If not, anyone know why it never got made?

At that time ( late '89 ), I think Mercer was beating the better fighters and could have won. Bowe went into the next league a couple of years later and would have been too good for Mercer.

Given that they both still seem keen to offer their tarnished goods in rings around the US, who knows? they could still make the fight.

No, they never did fight. It would have been awesome if they had though. I think one reason they didn't because Mercer had the WBO belt, and Riddick wanted one of the three major belts. Plus Mercer was lined up to fight other guys for the WBO already. Once Bowe got his belt from Evander, I don't remember Mercer being mentioned as an opponent for Bowe. What a shame, it would have been great!

Its just a shame how things have ended up for these 2, Bowe is still trying to chase his dream of becoming heavyweight champ again, judging by his last effort when only winning a split decision over a journyman that dream is never going to happen, and Bowe could get seriously hurt trying.

Mercer recently was stopped in 22 seconds in a K1 bout, he received a kick to the side of the head and was in no condition to continue.
Sad , when you think of what a great chin Mercer showed against Morrison, Holmes, Holyfield, Lewis.
