SAG in New York have been complaining about run-away productions for some years now. Surprised you weren't asked to go to Toronto or Montreal. We hear lots of so-called "New York" background movies are being filmed there, filmed at less than half the price. As you know, its a huge industry problem.

I don't like working in Canada. They only take key members of the crew and then we hire local film techs which aren't very good. In the end, a film company does not save money, the extra time lost using sub-standard film crews results in a lot more money spent. On paper, it looks like they are saving, in the end they end up losing. Today, I would be forced to take a film in Canada when asked due to the lack of work in L.A., however, I have turned down several films in recent years that were shot in Canada. Hollywood film crews are very tough, used to long hours and difficult situations. When inexperienced techs find out we aren't an 8-to-5 job, they begin to bitch and moan. The best film techs in the world come from L.A. and New York has top people, not Detroit. Anybody who believes making movies is easy, quickly learn differently. People who are not tough of mind and body, wash out very quickly. We are well paid when we work, but we earn every penny. A production manager can show how they can hire techs for less, and enjoy concessions made by the local government. That looks great on paper, and results in a nightmare in actual practice. However, Hollywood accountants make it work in their best interest.

Location, NOT Vacation . . .

In 1980-81, when we filmed "On Golden Pond" in New Hampshire, we literally lived on the pond for three months, which was the beautiful Squam Lake.
The film crew could not be lodged at a nearby hotel or inn. There was nothing large enough to accomodate a full feature film crew and our various needs and requirements.
Everybody on the crew was lodged in lakeside cottages, each with it's own dock and motor boat.
Each morning at 7am, we would leave our cozy little cottages, and motor across the lake to the other side, to a cove.

The house used in On Golden Pond, the one belonging to the characters played by Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepbern, was located back in the cove, constructed by the company a few months before we began filming. It was designed as a set, just as would be done on a sound stage. The walls were wild, which means removeable. If we change a camera angle, parts of the set can be removed to give us more room to move around. All the matters is what the camera sees, anything outside the lens frame is unimportant.

It was cool, my neighbor was the Key Grip, and he and I would ride across the lake every morning in our boat, and then return before sunset when we filming daytime exteriors.

What a beautiful place it was, and what a great film. It won multiple Oscars, Jane Fonda & Hepbern, Henry got a nomination. It was the "Best Picture" Academy Award winner that year. What incredible Hollywood talent were the Fonda's and Katherine Hepbern. I would sit off-camera after we were finished lighting, and watch them rehearse and run their lines. I'd watch closely as they performed. It was amazing. Brilliant. I learned a lot from the L.D., Rich Aquilar. Lighting legends on this major film, especially ladies who needed help, was done brilliantly. I learned from that experience, I watched closely, just as I did as a kid watching pro boxers train at the Main Street Gym.

I was thinking back on my film locations of past. Great films, great experiences, I watched history unfold, just as I had thru boxing.
I'll be out of town again soon, and this one won't be on a lake, and there will be no Hollywood legends among the cast.
I really don't know much yet. Tomorrow I'll get a script, then next week I'll spend a few days in Detroit scouting film locations.

My wife has never been on a film location, and in the old days, I'd have never brought her.
We used to burn the candle at both ends in the old days. Film people live hard lives, not so much today as in years past.
Some locations are a lot of fun, others not so much. One must remember, location is not vacation.
Today, I just want to go back to my room, clean up, write a bit and go to sleep.
The days of work and play are no longer. Things are much easier today on location, thanks to a good night's sleep

Monica wants to go on this one. I told her that Detroit might be a depressing place, hard times, sticky humid weather, dangerous place.
She reminds me she is from Brazil, and she loves humidity and misses it. She also reminds me that Brazil is one of the most dangerous places in the world..
I told her it gets freezing cold in the winter. She reminds me that most hotels and apartments come with a heating system.
I told her she might get bored. She tells me she's already bored.
You can see that I was trying to box with a boxer, and losing.

Monica asked where I would be staying, and I told her the "Motor City Casino".
She smiled, "A casino? This will be like one long vacation. You better take me."

I thought about telling her the old line that "location ain't vacation."
And I thought about telling her that Detroit isn't a place where many people go unless they have to.
Instead, I'll make it a fun time for both of us. I can do that (at least until the cold weather comes, then we'll see how much my Brazilian likes Detroit.)

PPV?, you got to be feaking kidding me, I wouldn't pay a penny to see Sergio Mora fight, and after Mosley's last fight, I won't pay a penny to see him fight either, and on top of that b-s, they give us, maybe, ,Victor "The Quitter" Ortiz..... :witzend: :witzend:

Shane Mosley will return to the ring Sept. 18 at Staples vs. Sergio Mora
June 30, 2010-latimes

Pomona's Shane Mosley didn't have much left after nearly knocking down Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their May fight, but the 38-year-old boxer has enough enthusiasm to continue his career Sept. 18 in a 154-pound pay-per-view fight at Staples Center versus fellow Southern Californian and former world champion Sergio Mora.

Mosley's promoter, Richard Schaefer, said the card will cap a four-day celebration of Mexican Independence ceremonies, including a concert, a public tribute to legendary Mexican fighters and a street fair near Staples.

After barraging Mayweather in the second round, Mosley (46-6, 39 KOs) lost the final 10 rounds on all three judges' scorecards in losing by unanimous decision on May 1. Mora (22-1-1, 6 KOs) is a former reality-television winner on the show "The Contender," and he proceeded to claim a junior-middleweight belt.

Mosley-Mora will feature an undercard including popular Mexico fighter Saul Alvarez and possibly Oxnard's junior-welterweight Victor Ortiz, Schaefer said.

Like I have stated before I saw great fights on free T.V, like Bobby Chacon vs Bazooka Limon, Yaqui Lopez vs Saad Muhammad, how can these hucksters have the balls to sell this fight.

Good point, Paul. In the main event, we have a former champ who is pushing forty, and cashing out.
His opponent's only claim to fame is participation in a Reality TV series tournament.
In the semi, we have a confirmed quitter. We know if he can't make the other guy bleed, he sure won't risk losing any of his own blood.

Wow Rick, I was really unaware that Hollywood pictures are taking a hit now.

Glad you cleared that up a bit and I sure do hope things get straighten out there. I know Arnold's cutbacks are big.

I just saw Alice in Wonderland 3D. I think 3D is the future, with the TV's coming out now too. Does that effect the conventional movie Lighting that you have done for years ? How about Pixar and those toon movies, does that put a crimp in lighting directors and stagehands and riggers also ? Hopefully TV will always be shot there, but as you say various new locations are coming into the picture now.

Wishing all the best, with little travel as possible in the future.

Charlie . . . Animation technology certainly effects the way movies can, and are, being made today.
Tomorrow is my final shooting day on a feature film titled "Hop", that is a combination of animation & live action. A $75 million film about a bunny, which is on the lower budget side of motion pic budgets today.
I haven't the numbers on the up coming Spider Man-4 film, but it will be in the hundreds of millions.

Imo, Mando was not a naturally gifed fighter, you can credit his success to his work ethics and his toughens of mind and body....
