I was hoping someone could help me out on this. I was compiling some reach information for older fighters and I came across a reach of 30 for Charlie Mitchell in the Corbett/Mitchell fight. What does the 30 mean? Is that the same as the current arm length that HBO is using? Is there some kind of conversion to the present day reach that is used? I would appreciate any help on this.

Calculating old-time reach
"Reach" usually means the distance between the fingertips of one outstretched arm, across the chest, to the fingertips of the other arm outstretched.

The 30 inches you have found for Mitchell does not sound quite right, using the above description. Perhaps that was merely for one arm only.

..the "30" was probably the way the measurements are done now...at least by hbo...from thre armpit to the fingertips. the older way..which has been done until quitle recently..and may still be done by some...was the "wingspan".....arms outstretched and measured from fingertips, across the chest and to the other fingertips. this could be deceptive....as a figher with a very braod chest could appear to have a longer reach than the arms really were. plus..it doubles the reach.....as they include both arms....and it's late and i'm still on medication from my knee operation...so i hope this makes sense to me whe i read it in the morning.
