What would be a good hotel to base oneself for this fight? Must be easy to find. I would be coming from Birmingham airport.

The LG arena (formerly NEC) is right next to the airport.FeargalóCuinneagáin wrote:What would be a good hotel to base oneself for this fight? Must be easy to find. I would be coming from Birmingham airport.
Unlike the NIA, the LG it is not in Birmingham City Centre but is about 10 miles south east of the city between Solihull and Coventry.
The Hilton Metropole is right next door to the LG (you can see if from the venuw) but is a little pricey if you are on a limited budget. You could try somewhere on the Cov Rd (A45) towards Solihull - there are plenty of lower cost hotels and B&Bs etc along that route?
It is a bit out of the way there mind (solihull is the nearest town for pubs etc) - if you were looking to go on the tear after the fight you might want a hotel somewhere nearer Brum City centre?
Re: Mr Warrens September Show
Theres a couple of Hotels in Coleshill just round the corner as well as an express type thingy just round the corner next to the little owl pub.

Re: Mr Warrens September Show
A good old-fashioned British and European middleweight title clash stands out on The Magnificent Seven card in Birmingham on September 18 when Darren Barker defends both titles against Matthew Macklin.
The unbeaten Barker, 22-0 (14), is a rangy stylist with quick hands and feet, a 'proper' left jab and a penchant for whipping in body shots. His sharpness and finesse should blend superbly with the more aggressive Macklin, a big-hitting fellow who is born-and-bred Birmingham but flits between there and Los Angeles, where he is trained by the great Freddie Roach, and also Ireland, where much of his family live. He is universally accepted because life is the best left-hooker you ever saw and Macklin, 26-2 (18), whacks with the left hook, the right hand – everything. He previously held the same British and European titles, relinquishing to concentrate on a world title crack in the States until a nose injury scuppered those plans and brought him home. Barker will hope to take full advantage.
"Dazzling" Darren picked up Macklin's old British title with a stoppage of Bristol's Danny Butler last year and his old European with a 12-round decision over ageing French southpaw Affif Belghecham last time out in April. The Barnet man labelled himself "the biggest fighter in the country" before Belghecham but he looked horribly drawn, and he faded in the closing rounds against a man outclassed by Irishman Andy Lee, although by and large Barker dominated and the decision was unanimous. Nevertheless, you wonder if getting down to 11st 6lbs is taking something out of him. If so, Macklin knows the feeling. He moved up to middleweight after the rigours of weightmaking – and Jamie Moore – led to 10-round defeat in a light-middleweight thriller in 2006, the domestic fight of the year by a mile.
Now on a winning run of nine, Macklin has never lost at middle but how does that compare to Barker, who has simply never lost, of course, and who had been looking great up to Belghecham. Perhaps we can attribute his late-round fade to overconfidence more than to any great struggle with the weight. Macklin had been looking great himself prior to the unknown Russian who broke his nose in sparring in Roach's Hollywood gym in April (shades of Michael Watson in sparring many moons ago with someone called Ray Webb). Barker v Macklin really is one of those fights where you think Barker can do it one minute and Macklin the next, two 28-year-olds born five days apart in 1982 who still have nothing between them.
Macklin will have the crowd on his side in Brum and will tell you that he boxes more these days to go with his power shots. However, he would be unwise to box Barker, who revels in his stick-and-move ability and is undoubtedly the quicker of the two. Macklin needs to hurt Barker to slow him down, to dent his confidence, and definitely has the bigger guns at his disposal, although a worry for him and his fans is a lack of a fight this year to date. He last fought in December. Ultimately, Barker does enjoy coming off his toes for a test of strength and for those body shots he favours, which will play into the challenger's hands. Macklin has fought the better men, destroying local rival Wayne Elcock and world class Finn Amin Asikainen last year. Even that defeat to Salford star Moore, now sadly retired, was hardly a disgrace.
On home turf Macklin forces a sensational late-round stoppage.

he looked devastating on his debut, has been less impressive since including a draw against journeyman Geraint Harvey i think it was.
he made his pro debut very young (18) so hopefully he's still got time (21 now I guess): gym-mates talk quite highly of him but I haven't seen him box in a couple of years.

Re: Mr Warrens September Show
nice piece, bennie.
coupla things: I don't think Barker has a problem with the weight, the problems vs the frenchman were more to do with 12 round stamina and the pacing of the fight for the full distance, IMO. Barker is if anythin a small-ish middleweight. I know who I think will look the bigger man when we see them in the ring, put it that way
It'll actually, per your comment on Macklin's boxing, be very interesting to see exactly how aggressive Macklin comes out or whether he starts a little more cautiously- as Terry D said after the Elcock fight Macklin started off establishing his jab to the body before really getting to work.
by the way you didn't mention Barker's chin (or Macklin's for that matter). It'll be really interesting to see how Barker holds up to Matt's best shots. if Matt gets to him early i think it's curtains for Barker. on the other hand, my own opinion is that Matt's chin isn't actually cast-iron either, Barker can hit with shots you don't see coming and I wouldn't put a stoppage either way out of the question
one thing's for sure its a top, top matchup well meriting the 50/50 and match of the year tags.

A big problem with the Frenchman was that Barker was not told who he was boxing until 2 weeks beforeCounter-puncher wrote:nice piece, bennie.

okay but he knew he had a fight longer than that, and knew it was 12 rounds? not knowing opponnent till late shouldnt' affect stamina that much?
Re: Mr Warrens September Show
Darren won a Commonwealth Games gold at light-welterweight, of course, so middleweight looks a dandy division for him. I just thought he looked a bit strange in a shot of him just prior to his European title win.

bet you a pound to a penny Macklin looks bigger in the ring, mate
Re: Mr Warrens September Show
This will not do well on PPV. It just doesn't have enough of a 'story' for the man on the street to think "I really must go out of my way and spend £15 on this".

Re: Mr Warrens September Show
Is it definitely a PPV? I would pay for it but he's going to have to promote it well to get the non-boxing fans interested. Looks like a great card though, as long as we don't get a succession of pull-outs.

Well he didnt lose to Bull and hopefully the fight will go ahead. The bill looks too good to be true and I wonder what it will look like on the night. There are bound to be pull outs.
