Fighters who should have been Champion

Post by bjermaine »

list fighters who never won a world title but should have because they were either the victim of a bad decision or just cheated (see juan coggi vs eder gonzalez I).

Billy Graham.
Got robbed against Kid Gavilan in 1951.
Lotta folks called him "The Uncrowned Champ" after that one.
Billy was a great fighter who should be remembered more.
Talk to any old time trainers and fight people and they always have great things to say about Graham.
A real pro. A fighters fighter.

Tyrone Everret also got jobbed vs Alfredo Escalara.

I wonder how long before Ali-Norton at the ballpark is mentioned.
That event has been.....widely discussed here at boxrec.

Yacqui Lopez had the rotten luck of being born into that era. He was certainly good enough.

A couple more screw jobs.

Eddie Davis/Spinks.

Briggs got the decision against Foreman, but he didn't come close to deserving it. You might be thinking of Savarese. Axl was clearly robbed, that's a good one.

Quarry is a stand out. I think you have to give this guy credit. He's the Reason Patterson wouldn't have been champion again. I'm good with those who say Patterson beat Ellis, but Floyd never got the best of Jerry IMHO. Shavers, Lyle, Patterson, on his hit list, and he gave Frazier a great fight, The Chuvalo night was a fluke IMHO. Also Foreman ducked him for good reason. ON a good night Jerry stood a shot against any HW in history.

BB,

Largely agree with your thoughts on Quarry.

Patterson getting the decision in the WBA elimination fight with Jerry could have been justified, imo. Floyd really came on late in that fight, if my aging memory serves.

Also agree that Quarry gave Frazier a great fight in their first fight for at least two rounds, but Joe clearly took charge after that.

Man, their first round was one of the best I've ever seen!

I bet this will get a few laughs, but I've always thought Marciano-Quarry would have been a hell of a fight.

Getting back to the topic question, I suppose there could be somewhat of a case made for Joey Archer.

He did give Emile Griffith a real good go twice at MSG. I personally think a draw would have been the best he could have hoped for, but he was real close to the title.

If I'm not mistaken, he retired in disgust after the second Griffith fight. His camp thought he had won at least one of the two fights.

That round we speak of from time to time is one of the best if not the best in boxing. To my way of thinking any one with enough genuine skill and heart to go toe to to blow for blow for three minutes with Frazier is top flight material. Maybe not smart, but amazing nevertheless. And not dumb either, someone had to test Frazier's resolve. But too bad for Jerry that Frazier passed the test.

Archer is a good call as well. Always liked Joey.
