What you can do to get more publicity to amateur boxing!

Post by Front Page Boxing »

As an amateur boxing fan, I have thought of many ways to promote the local amateur boxing scene nationally. So initially I started up a website of which I'm sure you've see me refer to many of times in my posts. lol

The internet is a great tool and it has the potential to draw more attention to amateur boxing than we realize. The internet has the potential to affect a small news website in the middle of nowhere as much as a major news website like ESPN. Internet traffic by clicking greatly impacts the content of a news site. Please bear with me as I break this down for you.

1. Advertising revenues
Most websites generate their revenue from the advertisers. The more clicks they get their advertiser, the greater the avenue for the website owner. So ideally, the website owner would want to draw in more traffic. Some websites will go out of hand with the most impossible annoying ads. However, such ads pay out a lot more than the simple boxed image. Some websites would even post stuff that's out of content for the purpose of drawing in more traffic, however Google does a great job of tracking websites who wishes to be listed in their search results. Google is known to blacklist out of control websites.

2. Content
Now a news site may cover many local sports and they tend to write based on the demand signified by the web traffic. Many internet writers will have a good feel of what's the hot topic or they may develop a following of their own based on their content.

3. Click for traffic
Ideally, the amateur boxing community has the potential to affect greater coverage of amateur boxing by just visiting the article to amateur boxing. If a small town newspaper normally averages 750-1,000 hits on their major sports article, imagine their response if they generate greater hits on a profile of their local boxer or coverage on a boxing event? It may not be possible for you to spend all of your time reading every news article on amateur boxing but just a click can go a long way.

4. FrontPageBoxing.com/amateurs
Now here's my spill on this. I'm not a corporation but just a boxing fan who is motivated by doing what I can to promote the sport. It's my way of giving back to the sport from the years I've enjoyed boxing. As we may know, boxing affects people outside of the ring in many positive ways. So the site is set up to post links to any amateur boxing articles I can find worldwide through the internet. I'm still perfecting my daily search so please feel free to send me any links my way.

I post the links to the articles on the amateur boxing page and I archive them in the archive page. The links may be broken if the news sites decide to take down the article. I'm not allowed to copy & paste the article as it is known to steal someone's work. Linking articles gives more exposure to the owner so it is usually appreciated.

Ideally, as traffic continues to increase to my site... it will direct the viewers to the many amateur boxing articles thus creating a greater demand for the subject over the world wide web.

5. Facebook
Facebook is another great tool that can be used to promote amateur boxing as well. I've created a fan page for boxing in every state of the USA. i.e. Front Page Boxing California, Front Page Boxing Nebraska, etc. The more fans there are on that page, the more attention it will draw to that content. For example... let's say Front Page Boxing Kansas has 2,000 fans. That will give a Kansas sports writer the incentive of 2,000 viewers who may click on his/her article about boxing. I've put together all of my fan pages onto a webpage of mine so a Facebook member wouldn't have to search for their area. Click on the logo.

That's my spill and thank you for your time.

Jon,

I think what you are doing is fantastic. I know here in Cincinnati, our local media coverage is horrible when it comes to boxing in general, but especially amateur boxing. I just had Mikail Jones win the National Junior Olympics, sent the information to all of our local media, attached a pic, basically wrote up an article for them, and could not get one mention on any news stations or in any of our newspapers. Now if Mikail had shot someone or robbed someone they would be at my gym with cameras rolling looking for any information or interviews that they could get. Keep doing what your doing and I am sure that all amateur boxing fans appreciate what guys like you and DC do for the sport. Best Wishes on the site.

I couldn't have said it better myself! I had a very similar thing happen as we had two kids from our gym represented in the JO's, now one kid los and the other went unnopposed. But i had to beg just to get a small article in the local paper ( which I wrote )! I don't understand.

Hey Coach Giovanni... I believe I just sent you out an email about your site. lol

I can't agree with you anymore. There is a bias against boxing. The only time it's reported is when a boxer commits a crime like you said or for a rags to riches story to show pity for the dear poor boxers. It's frustrating and our boxers should be treated like the world class athletes they are rather than just some welfare recipients who are looking for some handouts. Our boxers are fighters in and out of the ring. We know how the sport affects the characters of these young men in spite of the negative report.

For example... remember when Tommy Morrison got busted for drug possession down here in Wichita, Kansas? The story took off like crazy with everybody... even some boxing writers calling him a loser. The reality is that he was reading the Bible in his car in a parking lot at a fitness gym before workout. He didn't have the problem with the police being suspicious so he gave them permission to search out his car. They found an old bag with an old pipe with some 'possible' resin in it. He swears he didn't know how something like that ended up in his old bag. However, the case was thrown out. Now did the reporters retract their accusations? Nope. Anyhow... let me take a step off my soap box. lol

Feel free to send me the information on Mikail and I'll write up an article on him. Can you also forward me yours and his contact number for some comments as well? I write on examiner.com as the Amateur Boxing Examiner and I'll be glad to give him the recognition he deserves. Send me the info to [email protected]. Thanks for the compliment coach... it's the support from the amateur boxing community that makes it possible for guys like me, DCAmateurBoxing, LiveFromRingside, and UntilTheNextRound possible to get this going. Thanks.
