Commentary Gold

Post by ALI »

Quote taken from 'The 10 Count' on BS.com
The metaphorical wisdom of Teddy Atlas, as brought to you on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” before and during Round 7 of Demetrius Hopkins-Mike Arnaoutis:

Before Round 7, with Atlas narrating footage from earlier:

“Arnaoutis makes peanut butter sandwiches without the jelly. There’s the peanut butter. He gets inside, but he goes out again. And here comes the peanut butter again. He gets inside, but no jelly. He doesn’t punch. You gotta make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Arnaoutis, otherwise you’re not going to win this fight.”

And as Round 7 got under way, Joe Tessitore talked about how Arnaoutis’ trainer told Arnaoutis between rounds to get his hands moving. Atlas jumped back in:

“With the jelly, with the peanut butter. I’m not even talking about the glass of milk. We’re not even going that far.”

No, no, Teddy, you’d gone far enough.

Does Teddy Atlas not hit up catering before his “Friday Night Fights” broadcasts?

Two more examples:

June 18, 2010: “Berrio’s the kind of guy, you know, if he goes to a restaurant, he doesn’t look for the appetizer. He’s not looking for the starters.” … “He’s looking for the entrée.” … “I’m not even sure he’s using a knife and fork.”

June 6, 2008: “The bad news about Hill using that jab, that table setter, he needs to sit down for the whole main course. You know, at this point being so far behind, that table setter, the jab, not gonna get it done. He needs to eat behind it, with a right hand.”
Well done Teddy!

This got me thinking about other classic boxing commentary moments, such as the now infamous BANG! BANG! BANG! by Jim Lampley

If you can remember any other boxing commentary clangers that would give us a good laugh post them up here. Lets see what we can dig up :DD

How about Jim Neilly referring to "Roy Woods" when Roy Jones fought Clinton Woods?

Teddy Atlas is top quality. The crazier the metaphors, the better for me, as long as they work.

I'd go along with that - if its apt, it works and it makes me picture the scenario as well as laugh then I love it.

Neily was a piece of garbage the worst worst boxing commentator ever. He never ever ever fukking ever....actually commented on the action in front of him the way Atlas and Tessitore do....the way Rawlings and Mckenzie do......

The fight would start and Neily would talk about it being a "contest", never a "fight" and go on and on talking about the fighters back ground, most of the stuff people already know and expect to hear before the fight.......a total waster who ripped off people paying a licensing fee and who ruined many a fight.

Jim tailored his commentary to a general audience rather than to serious fight fans. I don't mind that, if it attracts newcomers to the sport. I do understand where you are coming from, though.
I see your point but in any sport the commentator is there to comment on the actual fight and events taking place in front of him.To add something to the picture. How could Neily do that when he refused to comment on the picture and instead gave us garbage about the pre fight. General sports fan or hardcore its irrelevant. For example if a world cup soccer game starts and the commentator just talks endlessly about the build up while ignoring the action such as goals and free kicks unfoldig in front of him that wouldnt be tolerated by anyone and he would be rid off.

Neily was indicative of the lousy coverage of boxing under the BBC in the Audley harrison years.

I like Teddy Atlas. He's got a good style. I remember he called the Andy Lee Brian Vera fight completely correctly and Vera won. He came out with some good lines in that fight actually... "Andy Lee needs to remember his mathematics lessons... more importantly his geometry lessons. A good geometry teacher will tell his students that the fasted distance between two points is a straight line. Andy Lee needs to keep that in mind." :TU:

I had a good look at Teddy when he commentated on the Contender UK vs USA thing. Firstly, he never stops talking and secondly, he never smiles. I don't like him.

Some more favourites:

"He was looking world class until he was knocked out in the first round."

"It's just a shame somebody has to lose this contest, but lose it somebody will have to, unless of course the referee calls it a draw, but he won't want to do that, unless he can't pick a winner."

Neily really was poor. What annoyed many a fan was his getting boxers names wrong.

Think it was Ali-Leon Spinks I when the commentator said: "When Ali spreads his legs you know something hard is coming."

Thats a nice set of principles to live life by!

Getting back to Neily I remember the one time the BBC got Duke Mckenzie to sit next to him. Duke has done radio so he is used to calling the play very quickly as it unfolds....Neily didnt let him get a word in!!! Duke sat there bemused at why Neily wasnt doing his job and commenting on the fight and thereby allowing him in to do his colour commentary. Every time Duke tried to nudge Neily even when one of the fighters had been cut and was bleeding to death, Neily kept on talking about how one of the fighters was born in California and moved to Philadelphia as a child!

I always remember George Foreman refusing to comment during Bowe - Holyfeild 3, saying the fight should be stopped.

"But we are paying you to comment on the fight, George" said Merchant

Foreman (reluctantly) "Holyfield is a sick man, Larry, this fight needs to be...

Lampley (interupping) "And down goes Bowe!!!"

Shut Foreman right up, that did.

I would much rather have the overwrought metaphors and porchfront wisdom of someone like Larry Merchant than some idiot who has just about grasped the mechanics of the sport merely telling me what he sees. I'm watching on TV, I can see what's happening anyway...
