Lacy vs Reid

Post by Freiheit »

From Boxingtalk:
Undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Jeff "Left-Hook" Lacy will face former title challenger Robin Reid in St. Petersburg, Florida on August 6. Showtime championship boxing will televise. Moments ago, Lacy told Boxingtalk he plans on knocking out both Reid and undefeated WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe before the end of the year. Full interview to follow shortly.

Jesus good fight. I feel Lacy may be too strong for Reid but Lacy may be underestimating him

What happened to Reid v Andrade? If this is on the level could be interesting, but Reid had better be fit enough to fight a higher pace or lacy will be all over him.

Reid has a fantastic chin though, and he can still crack a bit, but I think he will find it hard to match the workrate.

WOW. This is a VERY interesting matchup, and one which is very unusual in the modern day round robin (NO pun intended) of Euro champ fights euro poor contender at SM.

I'm still of the opinion that Reid is shot. But I'm calling upset by KO. Lacy is nothing special, just a busy fighter without the pop to trouble Reid. Jeff will come in knowing little of reid and underestimating him. He will be hit harder than he has ever been.

Didn't Andrade have untill Friday (the one that has gone) to get the fight sorted.

Good fight for Reid, not a big fan of Reid - but Lacy isn't all that either.

I doubt very much Reid can beat Lacy. Lets not forget without the knockdowns he'd have been beaten by Jab n Grab Magee. His workrate is abysmal these days.

Lacy W12.

Yes, but lacy can be hit and hurt also. He was behind on points (IMO) vs Vanderpol and was looking well out of it up untill he landed a haymaker I think in the sixth.

I was impressed by Vanderpol's performance that night - if Calzaghe or a Froch said they would be fight Syd I would be fairly impressed.

I've not seen the fight yet, but from what I hear Vanderpool was all over Lacy in the early rounds and was really boxing his ears off. He began to sting him with counters and then made the mistake of standing and trading and seemed to go for the knockout. Big mistake it seems.

However, throughout, Lacy stuck to his gameplan, and was completely relentless in taking it to Vanderpool. It does seem to me though that Reid has a chance of keeping Lacy at bay early on, but late in the fight if he fades, he's going to lose.

I think reid may be past it, however you never know with him because he is a somewhat inconsistent fighter and occasionaly you see flashes or real talent. If he has taken this fight it shows he is at least still hungry (well more hungry than that sorry assed Calzageh) and if he prepers he should be in with a resonible chance.

Anyone know the story on the odds?

I think its a good fight for Reid.
He will start an underdog, and with good reason but the style of Lacy will only help Robin.
Reid is a better counterpuncher and has a solid chin and punch.
Lacy is just a crude puncher who`s over done the bench presses.

I`d go for a Robin Reid stoppage, brave call but I think the style suits Robin, Lacy swarming at him will benefit Reid unlike most of Lacy`s previous opponents who couldn`t handle it.

You have to give Lacy props for taking on Reid. He has everything to prove and little to gain in defending his title against Reid. A loss would see him written off by the American press, and a win would just be a win over a guy who is considered over the hill by most.

Reid has ALWAYS been inconsistent, but he has never really had problems with guys who come at him, only with guys who give him movement. Reid has a similar style to Calzaghe, lots of punches and forward movement, and we all know how many problems Reid gave Joe way back when.

I just wonder whether or not he's got the fitness for 12 hard rounds, because Lacy isn't going to waiting for his spots, he'll be forcing the fight constantly, and that could be the difference.

At some point in this fight, Reid will detonate a big right hand on the surging Lacy.

I don't believe Jeff will take kindly to that, whereas Reid will be laughing at Lacy's 'power'. Of course, it will be single shots that are key for Reid, he's not going to be punching in bunches to try and finish off lacy. I hope he can get off enough right hands, a la Magee fight. There's no reason why he can't.

Its a mandatory isnt it? I assume Andrade didnt want the elminator hence this has been made as his mandatory.

I think Reid will be up for this big time, i believe his camp was trying to lure Calzaghe back into the ring and if he wins this fight against Lacy maybe Calzaghe will want a piece of Reid.

Agreed on the workrate but I had Reid ahead without the KDs. But his pace could be his downfall.

US refs aren't going to let Reid get away with teh sort of tactics that would unsettle Lacy either.

I hope he does it. Not a great fighter to watch but he's stuck at it through thick and thin and after Tillerman he deserves every success

Agreed. I've never been a huge fan of Reid, but I thought he put a boxing clinic on Ottke for 6 rounds, and looked to be romping to a certain win before that moss chopped pudendum and those dodgy judges scuppered his challenge.

He deserves every break he can get in my book after that.
