Last night DAWS/WILLIAMS - Strange?
Last night DAWS/WILLIAMS - Strange?
Don't normally comment on stuff like this as each to there own and the camp know there fighters much better than us but:-
This time I will, Williams had his best round in the 10th for a good few rounds and although I still had him 3 rounds down I felt he made a mark (if not a dent) on Daws in the 10th and felt the fight was far from finished, which I had thought was the case around the 8th and 9th.
Not sure what the thinking was really, Tommy seemed to want him out of there and whilst accepting what I have put above about the camp knowing best, if you are pulling a fighter out surely not after his best round for 4 rounds or so.
Just wondered if I perhaps watched a different 10th round to the rest of the world, any views?

Well, often it is a last fling, as with Napa against Hall recently and, going back many years, Barry Michael against Rocky Lockridge. However, I didn't see Daws-Williams so I am not really clued up on what happened.GLOBALBOX wrote:Don't normally comment on stuff like this as each to there own and the camp know there fighters much better than us but:-

As above, what tends to happen is a corner whos man is loosing will give him 1 final round. In fairness Williams did come out and produce a good round as he was asked to do, the corner then pulled him. We did not see and hear the full comments in the corner to be honest but I do know Williams corner fairly well and what I will say is that no way would they have pulled him for no reason, Williams wanted to go on and they did think very hard but chief corner pulled him. I think it was a good call myself but again we all see thing differently.

Looked very much like a last fling Bennie, like he'd gone out to give it one last go, put everything into it, did well but not as well as he'd hoped for — Daws didn't fold or show signs of folding. Williams probably had next to nothing left in the tank so sensible to get out under the circumstances. He can fight another day.

All good points and in no way was it a slight on the corner just wanted some views from others, seems I saw it wrongly, which is fair enough, cheers guys.

Re: Last night DAWS/WILLIAMS - Strange?
I spoke to George Scholfield and Jimmy 'Shea' Neary afterwards, they're a close team and, considering how hot it was in there, that Daws comes on strong in the later rounds and has never been stopped and that Steve Williams isn't really a puncher, they'd give him one last round before pulling him out. As it turns out it was very close on the official cards but the Williams' corner had felt he was too far behind to win on points.
Re: Last night DAWS/WILLIAMS - Strange?
Williams did well in the last round. I don't understand why they didn't send him out for the next round and throw in the towel if he took too much punishment.

Okay, so if you're in the corner, you know you're fighter better than anyone else and you've decided that, after a brave effort, he's just not going to win, he's only going to take more punishment, what would you do? Pull him out, blame the cuts, both of which were quite nasty, so he can regroup and learn, be better next time, especially with the psychological bonus that he won the final round fought. Or send him out again knowing that a painful stoppage can ruin a young, inexperienced fighter?
Re: Last night DAWS/WILLIAMS - Strange?
I thought it might have been the cut when I saw they were ending it... I reckon Daws had it on points though and might even have stopped him if it had gone on... could have gone on to actually stop him via the cut as he kept targetting it.

the cards were close somehow and williams could have nickd it if he won the last 2. i had daws 4 up, corner should have let him go oned robinson wrote:Okay, so if you're in the corner, you know you're fighter better than anyone else and you've decided that, after a brave effort, he's just not going to win, he's only going to take more punishment, what would you do? Re: Last night DAWS/WILLIAMS - Strange?
Tommy Gilmour made the decision it appeared. Williams wanted to go on and his corner remained silent. He'd just regained a foot hold, and unless in the flesh it was very different I think he shiocked Daws with his replies. It wasn't a bad call, he'll come back from it- but I think that the stoppage defeat will hurt him a lot worse then the points loss had he struggled through the last 6.
Re: Last night DAWS/WILLIAMS - Strange?
im a good friend of ste williams and maybe im a bit biased but i had him one round up,the judges had him one round down but jim watt had him 6 or 7 down so i think im abetter judge than jim,ste was told he was 6 rounds down and his corner pulled him to save him cause of the cuts but if you watch ste didnt want to be pulled it was tommy gilmour that pulled him,ste fought the best in britain and held his own for 10 rounds in his tenth fight and was stopped by a cut not by the fighter. if the fight would of went the 12 i feel ste would of won the 2 rounds as ste gets stronger the longer it goes,i am nothing but proud of steve as whenever he gets offered a fight he says yes,he doesnt ask were it is,how much he is getting,or who it is against,if more boxers in britain done this there wouldnt as many padded records ste is an old school fighter who gives his all and doesnt take a step back as you seen last night. well done mate were all proud of you

No way Ste was winning that (I was rooting for him), but he can still come again, like as you said it was only his 9th fight. Did himself proud despite the loss.

When Bobby Chacon tangled with Boza in a brutal and bloody rematch in 1983, the doctor, Flip Homansky, kept giving the badly cut Chacon "one more round".
Chacon floored Boza in the last and took the 12-round verdict.

Re: Last night DAWS/WILLIAMS - Strange?
to be honest lads i thought it was a bit premature to pull him out myself ,i did think williams was a few rounds behind but to pull him out with only 2 rounds left an considerin he had such a good 10th just thought it was the wrong decision you could understand if it was any other 4,6,8 round fight but this was for the british title williams is what 26-27 an readin the local press through the week he realised how forunate he was to get a crack at the title an that it was a virtual make or break fight even at his stage of career considerin how tough the division is,personallly i could of understood pullin him out if he was in seroius trouble but it wes never that type of fight both fighters were extremly tired because of the 30degree heat but that fight was goin the distance all day from what i could see the two nicks over the eye were nothin major an the corner seemed to be dealin with that fine also they asked the fighter for a big round in the 10th which they got so why pull him out then also there seemed lots of confusion to wether they actually wanted to pull him out and i am sure if they realised that on the officail judges scorecard he was actually only 1round behind they would of kept him in it seemed like the cuts man an the manager pulled him out the trainers wanted to have another look givin he had a big 10th its allright sayin weel come again an fight another day but these fights dont allways come again we all know how hard it is to earn a title shot it also turns out that it was all on the last 2rounds an if williams would of won them youd be lookin at a new british champ now i had williams winin the 1st two the 3rd an 4th were close could of gone either way then daws the next 5 with obviousley williams a big 10th so daws 2 or 3 rounds up, maybe williams corner thought the same or that he was miles behind which is why they pulled him out but you cant second guess the judges weve seen strange results in the past which is why in my opinion considerin what was at stake it was the wrong decision also it would be interesting to know the actual round by round scoring at the end of the day though the corners are there to lookin after fighters safety but in this case thought it was premature to stop in but good luck to williams in the future

well said mate, ste will be back, the boxing public like to see fighters like ste who lays it all on the ine and who tells it how it is
Re: Last night DAWS/WILLIAMS - Strange?
Williams will come back from that last night, but he was getting beat by 4 rounds to me last night.. Although he did have a good 10th round Daws had a good 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th Round which to me gave him a good/comfortable lead... I really was suprised 2 judges only had him 2 rounds down and even more so than 1 judge had him only 1 down... Infact if you saw his interview after the fight he said his corner had him 5 rounds down and were running out of rounds to turn it round.. They realized his last chance was the 10th and he did do his very best and wasnt good enuff to stop Daws so it was just logical to pull him out....

I had him five down. His own corner seemed to agree with most impartial viewers. The judges scorecards were terrible as usual.
