1992 Olympic Team vs. 1996 Olympic Team

Post by coachgiovanni »

As we can now look back at what these guys accomlished in the amateurs and the pros, which team was better the 1992 team that only won three medals or the 1996 team that won 5 medals. Comparing pro and amateur careers, which team was better? I am biased to the matter being that my dad coached Tim Austin to the bronze in 1992 and the IBF title as a pro. I had an upclose look at the 1992 team being that I was there with my dad and Timmy. Got to celebrate my 13th birthday in Barcelona. Not the best cake but a great experience non the less. I would say that the 1992 team was one of the most disappointing teams, lots of talent, not many medals.

1992 team medal pro record 1996 team medal pro record
106 Eric Griffin none 16-4 Albert Guardado none 5-2
112 Tim Austin bronze 27-2 Eric Morel none 42-2
119 Sergio Reyes none 14-5 Zahir Raheem none 30-3
125 Julian Wheeler none 22-7 Floyd Mayweather Jr. bronze 41-0
132 Oscar De La Hoya Gold 39-6 Terrance Cauthen Bronze 35-6
139 Vernon Forrest none 41-3 R.I.P David Diaz none 35-3
147 Pepe Riley none 15-4 Fernando Vargas none 26-5
156 Raul marquez none 41-4 David Reid gold 17-2
165 Chris Byrd silver 41-5 Roshii Wells none 18-2 R.I.P
178 Montell Griffin none 49-8 Antonio Tarver bronze 27-6
201 Danell Nicholson none 42-5 Nate Jones bronze 18-2
201+ Larry Donald none 42-5 Lawrence Clay-Bey none 21-3

Overall Pro Records 389-58 87% win perc. 315-36 89% win perc. Pretty even Records for the most part.

My Picks as to who I would say is the better or was the better boxer.
106-Griffin
112-Austin No brainer for me
119-Toss up
125- Mayweather
132- Oscar
139- Forrest
147-Vargas
156- Toss up
165- Byrd
178- Tarver
201- You pick
201+ - Donald

I would give the nod to the 1992 team as being the better team. Please give your thoughts. I figure that this will be a much discussed topic.

you have a toss up between Raul Marquez and David Reid - a gold medalist who knocked out the Cuban. Zahir Raheem was an excellent amateur he definately beats Reyes.

Depends on whether we are talking about the better amateurs or the better pros. They are fairly even team in both, but I would say Austin was a better amateur than Morel, but fairly even as pros. Same thing for Marquez and Reid. Reid is the better amateur, but very close as pros. Marquez had the better pro career because of Reid's eye shortening his career.
