Moses Kinyua - TOP MAN!

Moses Kinyua from Kenya boxed our fighter Lee Haskins on Friday night losing on points over 10 rounds. Moses sustained a fractured jaw in the second round but boxed on for the full 10 rounds. Moses showed tremendous courage in the fight. Due to the injury sustained we resheduled his flight home so he could receive treatment here in England. He is staying at my flat for the next 3 weeks.

During his stay with me he explained to me that he is a junior pastor learning to become a minister back in Nairobi. He works as a voluntary social worker helping the orphans, young kids involved in crime and drugs, also the HIV/AIDS problem. He explained that most of his fight purses go to help fund this project. Kev at britishboxing.net has done a piece on him. During his stay I am helping him setup a website and look for aid for his project here in England.

I know many boxers especially the bigger names do help with charity work but I read a thread on Mike Tyson with people saying they felt sorry for him losing all that money, when I hear a story like Moses's it makes me wonder.

It was refreshing to hear a story like this with all the negative press boxers seem to get these days.

It is a good story

It is also good to see an " opponent" being treated with respect by the home team

My father boxed in Africa 3 times himself so he knows what its like to be an opponent.

Moses is only 5ft 2 and 8 stone so he does not take up to much space at the flat!

Very decent treatment by the Bristol Boys - allowing an opponent stay over that is very good. If I was a coach/manager and he was fighting one of my guys I wouldn't have done that.

Very brave effort from Moses to last the course of the fight, fighting most of it with a serious injury.

Moses is in hospital today here in Bristol and is staying in overnight. He has had his jaw sorted and they also took out 5 teeth!!

I visited him today he is in good spirits. I will speak to him about donations and how we can sort them out.

I know he has asked if we have any old or spare boxing gloves that he can take back for the gym in Kenya. I'm working on that but if anyone has any ideas?

Totally agree with Jamie, Moses is a top man really enjoyed chatting to him and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Also Jamie and dad Chris are top blokes too, always willing to go out of there way to help

Thanks guys, went to see Moses in hospital this morning he seems a lot better. Will find out later whether he will be released today.

I spoke to him about the offerings of donations, he could not believe it.

I think it would be best to give him the cash and I know he would like to speak to anyone offering donations to explain more about his project. He will also be in London for week before he goes back.

Jamie.... didn't Dan Guthrie injure his thumb quite badly in his fight on your show? How is he/it fixing up?

Not the sort of thing that would normally be of interest, but I'll give it a bit of coverage on maxboxing if you want Jamie, it's nice to have some positive stories in boxing even if it's on our side of the atlantic rather than theirs.

You never know, might be some rich American boxing fans out there who want to get involved and help the cause out.

I dont think Moses has an account to cash cheques. So might be best to meet up to give him cash or is there another way to send the money so he can get the cash?

Dan Guthrie did injure his thumbe quite badly, he dislocated his thumb and will not be able to box on our show 29th April. He has been to hospital and is ok. Will be out for maybe 4-6 weeks.

James - story would be great. Like I said if you want to speak with Moses he will be out later hopefully.

Funny Story, I did not have a chance to tell Lee Haskins Moses had to go to hospital for the op. Lee was at the hospital visiting a friend involved in a motorcycle accident. As Lee was leaving the ward, Moses was being pushed along on a bed following his op. Lee then realised who it was! Lee and his young son spent the afternoon bedside talking to Moses about the fight, etc.

I don't know what the setup is like for Moses in Kenya, but most countries around the world these days have somewhere in big cities where you can get internet access...

Just a suggestion, but if Moses sets up a paypal account, then he can receive donations into a bank account in his home country, which anyone can easily donate to.....

Moses is now out of hospital, he is feeling much better.

Moses says:

"I would like to thank everyone for their concern, I am well. I am just resting now, I will take a break for about 2 months then I will be back in the gym again. Its possible to get injury thats all about boxing. I am still searching my goal to be one of the greatest boxers and I am working hard for it. I will concentrate on my project with the youth and orphans, I am grateful for anyone who would like to unite to help the project."

Moses and myself are sorting out a way to collect the donations and offerings. Thanks Jamie.

They would be great send them to me at the address I gave you.

Moses says there are about 15 pro's training at his gym. He says they received some donations from the asian community a year ago but there is not enough equipment for them all to train. Also there are many youths they are trying to get into the boxing gym and off the street away from crime and drugs.

Kevin at BBN is designing a website for Moses so people can learn more about Moses and his youth work project. Like Kev said donations will be able to be made on the site.
