Where are they now?
Where are they now?
I watch a lot of old fights on dvd/youtube as I am sure you all do and I find myself wondering what happened to some of these guys? Any information on the current lives of any old fighter you might know about would be great. The good, the bad, the prison, or whatever the case might be. A few guys I was wondering about:
Renaldo Snipes
Iran Barkley
Tony Tubbs-I read he was arrested for something to do with drugs again recently. Anyone know what came of that?
Tony Tucker
Meldrick Taylor
The list go on forever so anyone you guys know about let's hear it.
On a similar note, while working for a certain boxing website a few years ago I spent a lot of time trying to track down retired fighters for interviews. A few of them off of the top of my head:
Clifford Ettiene-now doing life in prison. I was not able to do a phone interview because of prison rules of some sort but I wrote him a bunch of questions and he responded back that way. He was pretty nice, however he did not respond to my question about the Tyson fight and why he didn't beat the count, but was able to take out his mouthpiece and talk to Tyson immediately after he stood up. He must not have liked that question.
Michael Nunn-in prison. I wrote him requesting an interview and he wrote back saying he would then he never responded again after that. I tried several times and was really bummed about this one.
Rodney Moore-very good man. Has his own youth organization. Talked to him for what felt like hours and he didn't want to stop talking boxing.
Joe Mesi- Also very cool. This was right as he was running for office.
Anyways...

I presume Cliff is serving the life sentence for his, "performance" against Tyson? Good on you for questioning him. He was a dog pudendum in that fight, & fully deserved a purse withholding. That was so far beneath contempt, it was sickening. I remember watching that live & hoping someone hit the dog with a bottle. What a shameless, prideless cheat.jrc26 wrote:I watch a lot of old fights on dvd/youtube as I am sure you all do and I find myself wondering what happened to some of these guys? Was Etienne highly regarded as a bonafide contender going into that fight?
Re: Where are they now?
Back on topic, I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that Iran Barkley was living in a small apt somewhere in NY (Brooklyn, maybe?) and was in pretty bad shape.
I only saw a few of his fights, but he struck me as a warrior. Warrior is an extremely high compliment, in my book.
Hope he is hanging in there.

Re: Where are they now?
After his fights with Lamon Brewster and Clay-Bey he was one of Ring Mags best boxing prospects for that year. Then he lost his next fight to Oquendo and it kind of went south from there. He was pretty much tailor made for Mike Tyson. He was just a straight ahead brawler mostly. As far as the odds go, I would guess somewhere in the 10-12 to 1 range. Tyson had just lost to Lewis and been off for a while, so I doubt they were that high.yancey wrote:Does anybody know what the odds were on Tyson-Etienne?Goodnight, Irene wrote:I presume Cliff is serving the life sentence for his, "performance" against Tyson? I had to go find it, but I will give you what Cliff wrote to me about the fight.
"I had a hard, problem filled training camp for that fight, but was in excellent shape. My people and I got to the airport when our promoter met us and said 'no fight, Mike didn't board the plane. But you can stay the week for free.' I wake up and put the tube on Sportscenter and someone says the fight is back on. No one told or asked me anything. So I said 'since it's all about Tyson then let him fight himself.' Jay Larkin from Showtime told me I deserved that money and he was right. So I went out there and got it."
Then he left the next two questions blank when asked about the fight and specifically the KO.
Re: Where are they now?
The reason I asked about Barkley is because is the book "Facing Tyson" the author mentions seeing him outside of a casino in Vegas after a fight (not his). The author said nobody recognized him and he didn't look very good. If I recall he used the term "sad" to describe him. So I was just curious. You are right about him being a warrior though. Old school!yancey wrote:Back on topic, I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that Iran Barkley was living in a small apt somewhere in NY (Brooklyn, maybe?) and was in pretty bad shape.

Re: Where are they now?
Bumb. Comes on guys. All you old school boxing experts on here can analyze whether Jack Johnson having a bigger thumb than Joe Frazier would benefit him in the 10th round if they fought each other in their primes, but nobody has some stories or info. on former fighters and what they are doing now?
I know Dempsey has some good intel.
Where are you when I need you buddy?

Re: Where are they now?
Barkley is really down on his luck (if that is such a word in this case). He was selling himself on Ebay a few years ago - A night out with Iran Barkley (you had to pick up the cheque for the food/drinks).
There is a film that's mooted called fallen soldier which he is in, but I've not heard much about a release date or even if it is finished.
He is still looking to fight...he is very deluded, but then a lot of ex fighters are.
Edit - Also, Nunn is in prison for a ridiculously long time, for coke dealing? Big fall from grace for him.

Not one you've asked for by Pryor is now a preacher and has set up an anti-drug charity IIRC.

Brought back great memories of Jorgen Hansen flattening Dave Green.
Hard to imagine Jorgen as a model though!

Iran Barkley is currently (as of November 2010, anyway) homeless in New York.jrc26 wrote:I watch a lot of old fights on dvd/youtube as I am sure you all do and I find myself wondering what happened to some of these guys? Re: Where are they now?
I don't wanna kick anyone whilst they're down but I remember reading articles for years about how Barkley would sometimes blow his entire purse from a fight at the craps tables & that was in the good days of the Van Horn/Toney/Hearns II fights. Can't really say I'm surprised at his current situation. Saddened, but not surprised.

Re: Where are they now?
People in Philly tell me he's not in great shape. They've seen him on corners standing on a milk crate preaching some kind of religion. Too many Philly gym wars. Meldrick was a warrior. I used to substitute teach at his high school when he was there and got to know him as I was also working local Philly amateur shows as an official. I happened to be in Vegas the day he made the Olympic team in '84. We went out to dinner that night and talked to like 2:00 in the morning. I never saw him much after that. He was a great guy. I would love to run into him again but if he's punchy, it would be sad to see him like that.theory wrote:Anyone have info on Meldrick Taylor?
Re: Where are they now?
He seemed obviously punchy on the Legendary Nights documentary a few years ago about his fight with Chavez, but I've never met him in person.
