Liston vs. Ali

Post by Newbie »

How badly did Ali beat Liston in their first match? Was it competitive or was it as one-sided that history has led me to believe? I have never had the opportunity to watch the entire match. I have only seen the edited version on replays. Also, why exactly did Liston quit between rounds?

there was no real reason for his quitting between rounds, most people belive that he was paid or intimidated to take dives in these fights.. to be honest it seems very wierd.. escially the second fight. The powers that be didn't like the idea of an ex con being world champ so down he went....

The fight was even on the cards, but Clay was coming on having cut Liston. Liston quit with an alleged shoulder injury, but there are strong rumours that the fight was "fixed" indeed.

The first time Liston and Ali fought,Liston was not use to having his opponents move as much as Ali did, causing Liston to miss many punches.
Liston was looking foolish fighting Ali and he must have assumed it's better to quit than to look more foolish by continuing the fight.
There's a book"The Ghost Of Manila".The author mentions he spoke to Liston about a year before he died and Liston told him he was just"Fed-Up"with Ali and his Muslem crowd the hung with him. They vandalized his home, harassed him at the casinos in Las Vegas.
The arthur also mention Ali made many slurs towards African fighters that was never elaborated on by the sports metier. He called Liston a"Big Ugly Bear",he called Frazier a"Gorilla",he said George Foreman was"Too Ugly" to be heavyweight champ.
