Re: Stuart Hall vs Martin Power rematch
London-based Irishman Martin Power looks to win back his old British bantamweight title from Darlington's Stuart Hall in a mouthwatering rematch in Sunderland on July 23.
The 30-year-old Power held the title for over two years from the night in May 2005 he licked Huddersfield's dangerous Dale Robinson on a thrilling and bloody 12-round decision in London. Robinson had stopped him in the amateurs but Power took the return by the scruff of the neck and rarely let go. He went on to make make two successful defences against Hackney's slick Ian Napa and another Darlington man, the gutsy Isaac Ward, before Napa deprived him of the title, and a Lonsdale Belt outright, on a unanimous 12-round decision in London in November 2007. Victory over Hall would secure Power that Lonsdale Belt for life.
Power was a great prospect before South Africa's "Atomic Spider" Tshifhiwa Munyai derailed him twice for the Commonwealth belt, soon to be followed by the surprise Napa setback. He has blown hot and cold since and was overwhelmed by Hall in the eighth and last round of a punch-for-punch crowdpleaser last year in Brentwood, although the match was made above the bantamweight limit and Power believes, with some justification, that the lofty 5ft 8ins Hall is desperately tight at the weight and it will be a different story on Friday week.
Hall, the first ever British champion from Darlington, had never made bantamweight prior to his title win over that man Napa just last month and you wonder how comfortable he is down there. He forced Napa to bail out on his stool at the end of the eighth round at a stage when Napa seemed to be getting to him with body shots. Don't get me wrong. It was a big win for the unheralded, unbeaten Hall, a man with just nine fights on his card and good boxing skills and workrate, but he still has to do 12 rounds as a fully-fledged bantamweight.
The challenger, a natural bantamweight, will know all this. Power is on away territory in Hall's native North East but has the experience to deal with that. Does he have enough left to win back the title? We are soon to find out.

bennie - Stuey Hall isn't from the same family as Michael and Allan. A common (and understandable) misconception.

Couldn't agree more, a modern British crime that was. Absolute stone wall DQ.mickey1975 wrote:Bennie,Martin never licked Dale,he stuck the nut on him and should have been thrown out.
Can't remember who the ref was - I'd guess O'Conner on the evidence....

Your right it was a tight fight, i did do enough and got it by a few rounds, the ref was'nt O'Conner, that headbut was Bad, didnt even think i done it till i watch the Replay. I was'nt the 1st and i wont be the last to commit a foul in Boxing.
I didnt lose the British Title to Napa, i relinquish due to being Injured, Napa beat Booth for it then i fought Napa....
Its easy to come on here saying im going to do this and that, as anyone can il leave it till fight night...

Re: Stuart Hall vs Martin Power rematch
Martin Power bids to reclaim the British bantamweight title he never lost in the ring when he takes on holder and former conqueror Stuart Hall in Houghton-le-Spring on Friday week (July 23).
Power, 30, won his old title with a clear if hard-earned decision over Dale Robinson in London in May 2005, doing what he had to do to win as he busted up Robinson and fought in clever bursts, particularly in the later championship rounds. After two impressive defences injury forced the Londoner to relinquish and allowed Ian Napa to pick up the title and to dominate the domestic bantamweight scene as Power struggled for his old form and was stopped by Hall last September in a thrilling punch-for-punch affair until Darlington man Hall, surprisingly unrelated to the fighting Halls from the same town, found the punches to end it in the eighth and final round with Power pinned on the ropes. However, Power looked right back to his best with a five-round stoppage of useful Welshman Matthew Edmonds last time out; Hall, for his part, stopped Napa to claim the British title - enter this rematch.
The unbeaten Hall looks inexperiened after just nine pro outings but he turned pro at 28 after an extensive amateur career and those stats are deceptive as the established Napa found out just last month. Hall, now 30, is big for the weight and sets a hot pace and he ultimately 'broke' Napa, who retired on his stool at the end of the eighth round at the point of collapse, according to his trainer Brian Lawrence. The same pretty much happened to Power, although Power has been quick to point out that Hall outlasted him in a catchweight affair. Indeed, Power looks much more comfortable at bantamweight than the rangy champion, who boiled down from super-bantamweight and even featherweight for the Napa shot.
This is an interesting one, then. Hall is on home turf in the North East, which is always an advantage, and presumably, what he did before he can do again, but you never know in boxing when weightmaking plays a part and when the opponent is the feisty, uncompromising Power, who shrugs off defeat quickly. Duran was able to do that, along with most South American boxers, but it is quite a rare European attribute. On the topic of Duran, he once butted Sugar Ray Leonard in their third and final fight in 1989, opening a bad cut inside Leonard's mouth. Power is still vilified for a blatant butt which busted up Robinson when he won the British title but he is not the referee and he got away it, just as Duran did. Some call it dirty, some call it ruthless - take your pick.
The result of this fight is also a case of pick 'em.

All the best Martin
Re: Stuart Hall vs Martin Power rematch
Hall's on a superb run and with his desire I think he can continue his form, he coped well last time with Power's big advantage in experience. The Napa win must have taught him a lot too.
The best fight out there at the moment for the British title is Hall v Davies IMO.
