Cheers Diggler

We finally got it off the ground following a few last minute headaches.

Merseyside's monthly fight magazine is now available by subscribing to www.merseygloves.com. Those in the Liverpool area can PM me and I'll do my best to arrange a delivery if within local distance.

First issue has exclusive interviews with Stephen Smith and 80's Heavyweight Noel Quarless as well as several news pieces on Derry Mathews, Martin Murray and Nathan Brough. We recap all the latest amateur news as well as also featuring all the latest talk on MMA.

Don't miss out.

Picked up a copy at the Hatton presser today and read it on the train coming home. It's a very exciting time for the Merseyside fight scene. There's some real talent coming through plus now having that Echo Arena instead of the old Everton Park Sports Centre, what a difference!

We have some good fighters who are going places but i'm quite disappointed with the amount of pro shows we get per year, i don't feel there is enough considering the talent from here. The echo arena is great and all but I used to love the regular shows at Everton Park Sports Centre and Liverpool Olympia too.

Does anyone know how many pro shows Liverpool had last year? I could end up being completely wrong on this and just have my head buried in the sand.

I know we had the Smith/Dodson/Quigley shows not too long ago.

Quigley/Smith/Dodson shows aside, there was Olusegan v Wright in June 09 and I think that was it last year.

Few decent amateur shows but that is not enough given, as you say, the number of pro's we have from the region.

Cheers Ed, glad you enjoyed it mate.

The lack of shows in Liverpool is a concern for a place that calls itself "The fighting City."

The absence of suitable Pro stables is also striking. I spoke with Joe Selkirk at length regarding this and we didn't seem able to reach a suitable conclusion.

The Vaughan camp is thriving, Dave Tonks has just arrived and Tony Quigley Snr pretty much has Kirkby cornered. These are the only three gyms with regular activity. Schofield and Neary helped out with Ste Williams but I'm certain they don't have a base.Paul Stevenson is a quality trainer who has just turned the Everton Red Triangle Pro-Am so hopefully more amateur clubs will lend their knowledge to the pros.

Selkirk blamed the massive number of amateur fighters turning over in such a short time led to some fighters going to Manchester or Preston to train as there was only 2/3 to choose from in Liverpool. He also mentioned the success of Manchester fighters in recent years as another reason why Scousers went there.

It has nothing to do with were the gym is based, It's all about finding the best trainer for you, There are some top trainers in Liverpool, Manchester and Bolton... I just feel it's who's best for you on a personal note, I remember Tony Dodson telling me that he went to Jimmy Tibbs and he was amazing but that he was badly home sick, If you have an unhappy fighter he's not gonna be a very good fighter..

Liverpool's scene is thriving so much cos we all had fantastic success as amateurs and were all trained by brilliant coaches, The am gyms in Liverpool should be given so much credit. As for more pro gym's in Liverpool??? We don't need more quantity we need to keep the quality... :TU:
