Leicester's Rendall Munroe faces a daunting task when he challenges for the WBC super-bantamweight title held by Japan's deadly Toshiaki Nishioka in Japan in October.
Southpaw Munroe, the No. 1 contender, earned his crack with an impressive run of defences of the European super-bantamweight title and a nine-round knockout of of Victor Terrazas in a WBC title eliminator in April in Coventry, proving too strong and fit for the useful Mexican and finishing it with a thumping body shot. Always in great shape, the muscled Munroe is on a winning run of 11 since his only career defeat up at featherweight in April 2006 (points). He looks ready for Nishioka, who has gone unbeaten in six years since Thailand's Veeraphol Sahaprom outscored him down at bantamweight in March 2004 - and is an explosive puncher. The champion, also a southpaw, has taken out eight of his last 10 opponents, including all four challengers for his world title, one of them a sensational three-round stoppage of Mexico's Jhonny Gonzalez.
Munroe's best chance is to really 'work' the 33-year-old Nishioka, a pro since 1994, as he worked the dangerous Terrazas and prodigious Spanish puncher Kiko Martinez on the way to two big victories at home. Munroe, whose day is that of a bin-man, is nothing if not hungry, hungry for the title.

Tough fight for Munroe. Nishioka is a very good fighter, not a paper champ who is lucky to be holding an alphabet strap. I have trouble seeing Munroe winning this one. Don't think he will do enough to win a decision and I can't see him stopping Nishioka. Munroe can have some success but not enough, imo. I think Nishioka will win a clear decision.

I'm Irish and I like Munroe. We don't all think the same you know.

I can't see him beating Nishoka to be honest but he has nothing to lose going over to Japan. Munroe has earned the right to be fighting for a title. Best of luck to him.

A fight I would love to see at 122 would be Nishy - Poonsawat, by far the two best in the division now that Cabellero has moved up.

Probably because of the pasting Bernard Dunne took from the hands of Frank Maloney.

Remember when Honeyghan went to the states and stopped the invincible Don Curry? Well I can honestly say this won't happen here, Munroe will get battered.

because they can't claim the man as one of their own!

both are aggressive and it'll be a sensational war.

i'm glad the fight finally seems to be on. munroe going to japan. i wonder if this is why it took so long to make this fight and why he took 2 elims? to sort of put off this difficult away day...(or maybe he needed the extra elim fight, which gave him extra experience and saw munroe make serious improvements IMO).

Munroe and Maloney are both short, both have surnames starting with M and are both tasty in a scrap but they happen to be two different people. Do the Irish need a map drawing in order to illustrate this?
Once again, us Oirish do not all think alike. ;;-)

Best of luck to Munroe, he certainly has one tough task ahead of him. Nishioka is a very hard hitter.
