Good post, I don't think Kindelan was a sharp as possible (first fight in almost a year) but it was still and excellent performance by Gavin. Amir is done with the amateurs so why still mention him. I just hope he is feeling a bit more pleased with himself (Gavin) now that he has had time to reflect.silkov wrote:

I also thought that interviewer was a right arsehole asking Gavin to talk about Khan!... give the guy (Gavin) some respect! he's only 19 and has gone through and won the ABA'S and given Kindelan a decent fight... he should be well pleased with himself.
Khan has become totally overrated imo!... people seem to have forgotten that he hasn't even won anything of note yet!.

I thought the coverage was ok, a little bit style over substance in places, I thought all the jazzy camera angles during the interview were a bit stupid at times, but you have to remember, that the BBC are trying to get non-fight fans into the sport, and they have to build the characters up. Let's be honest, even most fight fans know feck all about amateur boxing, so they have to devote time to profiles etc to make the figthters stick in the memory.
I thought Price won at a canter. He looks a decent prospect. If he turned pro and did some strength and conditioning work, he could be something a bit special I think. Early days yet though.

No mate! :x , bugger the non-boxing fans! let em watch Eastenders! whats the point the BBC attracting non-boxing fans and alienating the hardcore boxing fans at the same time!. I feel very strongly that the boxing coverage should be precisely that and cater for the genuine boxing fan!... imagine the outcry if they started doing the same with footie... 70% yapping and 30% of the matchs... showing 20 mins of the first half of Chelsea vs Manchester United then cutting to Inverdales smarmy face saying ' And Chelsea won eventually 2 - 1 after a penalty!'.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I thought the coverage was ok, a little bit style over substance in places, I thought all the jazzy camera angles during the interview were a bit stupid at times, but you have to remember, that the BBC are trying to get non-fight fans into the sport, and they have to build the characters up. There'd be riots on the streets mate and questions in parliment!.... the footie fanatics don't get treated like shite so why should the boxing fan?.
Even Bowls gets better coverage than boxing by the beeb.
A lot of it is stupidity..... whoever is behind the 'boxing coverage' now since the shake up hasn't got the faintest idea about boxing!.
So bugger the non boxing fans! thats my view! :x :x :x

The difference is that everyone already knows how Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal are. They know who the big players are, they don't NEED to set the scene. Hell, more people probably know who the bowls players are that our boxing 'stars.' The amateur scene is even worse, who the fornicate would be able to recognise anyone outside of Amir Khan on the street?silkov wrote:No mate! :x , bugger the non-boxing fans! let em watch Eastenders! whats the point the BBC attracting non-boxing fans and alienating the hardcore boxing fans at the same time!. There's what, maybe 300,000 people prepared to watch boxing regularly in this country, BBCs coverage is going to millions.
Had they just broadcast all the fights in their entirety without any explanation of who the fighters were, I will bet lots of people would just turn over. It's all about viewing figures.
I'll be honest, and say straight up, that I find amateur boxing boring, it's pitty-pat punching and stupid scoring system, and the insistence on stopping a fight on a nosebleed and breaking the action the minute someone is even slightly wobbled, is a big turn off.
Imagine what it's like for a non-boxing fan?
Until such time as there are boxing names in the mainstream, then people are going to have to tolerate this sort of coverage if they want the sport to remain on terrestrial TV.

Until such time as there are boxing names in the mainstream, then people are going to have to tolerate this sort of coverage if they want the sport to remain on terrestrial TV.
But the coverage was so cut up and erratic I very much doubt there will have been many non-boxing fans watching that stuff and saying 'blimey I'm going to watch this kid in the future!...etc' it was all about Khan and Wicky... and Khan will most likely join Wicky in the netherworld of SKY very soon anyway. The coverage had no focus and if it alienated the true boxing fan I don't see why it would spark the interest of those not really into boxing anyway. At the end of the day the coverage of a sport should be geared towards that sports fans!... this idea that boxing fans have to put up with shite presentation and cut up highlights of fights because this is going to attract more people eventually is a myth.
It is precisely this sort of 'coverage' that has left boxing marginalized and most boxers fighting in obscurity.
The only way to get fighters names into the mainstream is to show their fights!... simple really but something the BBC seems unable to grasp... as it is showing rubbish highlights and building shows around the prattlings of Bunce and Inverdale will I bet attract very few new fans to boxing but alienate many more true fans away from it... I certainly won't be altering my diary to watch their coverage of Amutuer fights anymore, I've had my fill of the BBC'S shite!.

On that last point I agree, why on earth didn't they show Price's fight whole, that made no sense at all....
I think the beeb are flogging a dead horse anyhow if all they are going to show is amateur boxing, every time a star emerges, they are just going to turn professional, and if they don't have any professional coverage (which they still may do from what I can gather), then what's the point.
I think that these problems can be ironed out, other sports have a lot of chat, for instance football, there's plenty of chit-chat with Lineker, Strachan and Hansen, and personally I enjoy their contributions immensely.
The difference is, it's woven into a whole football match, not just highlights.

I have nothing really against chat if the fights are still shown in full but to put the chat ahead of the actual boxing is negligent and serves no purpose I feel. I actually think the Beeb started off very well when they showed the Henessy promotions and had some very decent fights on, but now they have totally lost the plot and if they really think that they are going to build up some kind of following with their Amuteur coverage they are very misguided. Even if the coverage was good I think people are far more likely to get interested in fighters when they are young pros rather than Amutuers... many find Amutuer boxing a turn off (the points system has ruined it for me!) ...and as it is the coverage is crap so the chances of attracting new fans is even more remote!.jamesmcdonnell wrote:On that last point I agree, why on earth didn't they show Price's fight whole, that made no sense at all....

All in all I don't think they have a clue what theyre doing.
Silkov, you've got yourself a supporter in me! Excellent posts.
After showing the whole of the Kindelin-Gavin bout and the whole of the Andy Lee contest I was feeling full of hope we'd get several more bouts shown in full.
But there WAS far, far too much waffle and not enough boxing. Silkov is right. The BBC should stop poncing about and show uniterupted BOXING. You never know, we might just get new fans turn to the sport if they get the chance to see an entire fight.
Gavin was exceptional. I couldn't believe the lack of praise he received (the interviewer should be knee-capped for his awful technique) and some of the posters on here need to take some happy-pills. Gavin is 19 and boxed a living legend. Kindelin was putting serious power in his punches and I thought Gavin boxed a fabulous fight. He should be the talk of the town.
Can't agree with you about Price though. Yes, in the first round the Cuban seemed to land several body shots that didn't register, but Price seemed to come of age and boxed with great authority. For the BBC to cut his bout short after two rounds was a crime.

It was laughable the way the interviewer used the fight as an opportunity to big up Amir Khan, although Gavin's fight (as he rightly pointed out) was in fact closer with Kindelan. You could see this miffed Gavin and rightly so, seeing as his achievement was used to bolster Amir's performance.
What gets me is that Khan is not even going to be featuring on BBC, but they keep banging on and on about him, unless there's something we don't know? Why not concentrate on the next wave of amateurs coming through.
I thought Price looked pretty impressive, anyone know how old he is?

Yeah, I think Gavin being a bit disappointed in getting rocked by Kindelin soured his excellent effort for him, but the way the interview approached the situation was horrible.
I can't work out the BBC either. I'm totally convinced the reigns should taken from Inverdale and handed over to Ron McIntosh. At the moment the BBC seem to trying to trip boxing up and make it look a joke. Boxing doesn't always help itself so we could do without the BBC making things worse.
I think Price is in his early twenties.

Gavin should also get credit for having the balls to go through and win the ABA title... something that Ahmir hasn't done.
And Gavin is still only 19 so is a great prospect I'd say thogh you wouldn't have thought so the way he was treated... I just hope it gives him more determination to carry on and succeed.

Competition martial arts like Tae Kwon Do and Karate are like that. Olympic Tae Kwon Do was soooooo boring.Kevo wrote:To tell the truth, I can't watch amateur boxing. It's almost become a non-contact sport! It's similar to Tae Kwon Do in a way, where the slightest touch scores and all the actual combat is taken out. Its a totally different game from the pro's.

Yes I agree definately, the points system has also killed off what excitement was left as you now know who is gong to win (or who is being ripped off) ...to take away the magic of not knowing the result till after the bout is madness I think and I don't see the system being much fairer than the old Judging system... there were some shocking results at Athens!. :x

Have to say mate that from where I'm standing you're the twat for making such a statement. Instead of the usual boasting etc we usually get from fighters Gavin was genuinely self critical about his performance against the worlds top Amutuer fighter pound for pound.... the fact that he wasn't too happy at being expected to sing Ahmirs praises is only to be expected and totally correct, my guess is that your a khan nuthugger yourself!...
I don't agree, I thought bearing in mind he is about 18 years old and it was I assume his first time being interviewed on TV that he come across ok.DK2112 wrote:Frankie Gavin came over as an absolute t*at in his interview.
He was just a bit gutted by his performance which he had no need to be when you consider who he had just fought.
