I'm not saying McDermott will win, but people are raving about novices, (most of which don't have fighters as good as Butler and Bendall on their records) as being much, much more deserving. Of course I would rather see him fight Groves, but people seem to be completely over-reacting to this. Smith has had two hard fights in a row, both massive events in his home town. Surely a good style match up against a decent boxer with a couple of good wins isn't too much to ask?

McDermott is a decent defense if your a Lenny Daws/Rob Nortan type British champion with no realistic apirations to move forward. Personally thats where I rate Paul Smith to but we know its not where he rates himself. His win over Quigley was ok, then he takes a step back by fighting a guy Quigley had stopped, now he is fighting someone worse than both. Who is next after McDermott, Paul Samuels???

He is ranked by the WBO and WBC. He should look to improve his ranking by fighting someone else ranked there, or having an eliminator. If McDermott is the best they could come up with there not doing there job properly.

Plus he clearly wants nothing to do with Groves.

Fair point, and obviously the money men know more about this than me.

I also have a bit of an idea (albeit a much smaller scale). My little cousin is a pro boxer and just trying to get a fight any fight is proving to be a bitch. So I appreciate it only gets more difficult to get the right opponent. As I say though, I'm just not overly excited by McD. If the tickets are priced though you'd still get a good crowd at the echo. Just hoping that this fight (if it does goes through) leads to some decent names.

As a side point, who's your pick for the Super Six (both winner of the tourny and between Froch and AA)?

Because I am a boxing fan that has twice paid to see fight cards where you have featured, gave you allot of credit for your win against Quigley and chasing a fight with Magee. I have watched many of your fights on TV and have continually told anyone that would listen that your brother is the number 1 prospect in the country and going to be the best thing to come out of liverpool since the Beatles. That should earn me enough respect from you to respond to my Groves question which you are still avoiding.

He is fighting end of July and has publicly called you out several times. Will be more than ready for an October date which is when I presume the farcical McDermott fight will happen. If you can give me one good reason why McDermott is your next opponent instead of Groves I will refrain from slating you again.........btw not being ready or experienced enough doesn't count because he is Commonwealth champion and has several good wins at the weight unlike McDermott who doesn't have a win better than Adamu in his career. Its also the exact same situation as your brother against John Simpson. Groves brings more fan interest, sells more tickets, sky would love the fight and the press would get behind it. Its a fight fans want to see and I saw a poll recently where the overwhelming majority of people said he would knock you out. So lets here the reason why your not fighting Groves and facing McDermott in another step backwards and a fight not even scousers will gets excited about?

If you again try to dodge the Groves subject I will continue to assume you are ducking a fight with him. Which is fair enough you have your career to think off and getting stopped by a 9-0 novice would put you back two years and stop any chances of getting a world title fight in the future.

Finally a bit of common sense.

There doesn't seem to be that many super middles around British Title level able to contest. Paul Smith is due a good class European or American boxer. Against the right style he'd do really well and look good. Against a different style it is a different story. Groves is a good fighter with speed and power and his last result was great. He needs slowing down though to get ready for the more experienced men; it is a different story after 6 rounds.
