Ricky Hatton proud of brother Matthew taking on Nuzhnenko

Post by nigeltsport »

Ricky Hatton says he was so proud of Matthew when he beat Gianluca Branco to win the European title but is even more so now that his brother is facing Yuri Nuzhnenko on Friday. Ricky told Hatton TV that Matthew could have taken an easier voluntary defence first but instead insisted on facing mandatory opponent Nuzhnenko who is still in his prime.

the 2 brothers always seemed to be close and it is right that matthew gets respect. he is game to face hard fighters and has really improved. it is a shame that he hasn't more power (thought the ted bami result was excellent). fair play to him, he gets on with it, does his thing, seems to enjoy it and doesn't seem daft enough to think that he isn't very well looked after.

He's always seemed very level headed to me and comes across well. It can't be easy having everyone continually saying he's only got where he has because of his brother. If his name was anything other than Hatton his record would be given much more respect.

Exactly, it's not his fault he's Ricky's brother is it and he's made most of what talent he's been given and works his nuts off. And Ricky can't get in there and help him when that bell goes. Didn't see tonight's fight but a great win and good luck to him. Good fighter who has really improved and put in the work needed to do so. Well done Matthew. :TU:

Absolute bullshit. Matthew Hatton has been riding on his brother's coattails for years. That's how he amassed something like a 35-3 record without fighting a single live contender. He'd already lost to journeymen David Kirk and Alan Bosworth but was still given chance after chance.

When he did finally step up, or at least when he became a main event fighter, he took on over the hill 'names' like Tackie and Bami. Everyone who watched the fight saw that he lost to 38 yr old N'Dou, he beat an old Branco a couple years past his prime, and was gifted a decision tonight against Nuzhenko, but what do you expect when his brother is the promoter?

He won the N'dou and Nuzhnenko fights on my scorecard, so not everyone thinks he lost to N'dou and his win over Nuzhnenko wasn't a gift.

The fights with N'dou and Nuzhnenko could have both gone either way. Absolutley no way they were robberies.

I didnt think Hatton would win - he has to be congratulated on that !! - he will now get a decent pay day fighting for a world title.

Some people on another forum were mentioning Saul Alvarez as Hatton's next possible opponent? Anyone know something about this or is it just typical forum BS?

The current IBF and WBA beltholders don't seem very strong. I would actually give Hatton a chance at winning a world title if a fight with one of them could be made, although I certainly wouldn't favor him.

Matthew told me before the fight that Alvarez has been talked about in Los Angeles - but nothing more than a possibility and there are other options too. In any case, Ricky's view is that Matthew may have fractured his jaw last night as he told me in his interview, so he might have to have some time to recover from that

What is the point of having a fight with Saul Alvarez?

Doesn't Saul Alvarez fight at light middle now, he won a belt not so long ago. A fight with Soulemane M’Baye looks the most winnable.

Yeah, he could take MBaye. Just needs to work work work. Got to fight a little more like his brother against MBaye.
