Didn't Michael Gomez have to use the ring surname "Gomez" instead of his birth surname "Armstrong" because of this guy?

I only read that far because nothing came up for Michael Morris.

Yeah that's right. Apparently he named himself after Wilfredo Gomez. Bit absurd that he had too change his name in the first place just because there was another guy with the same name.

Michael was a gutsy fighter but I think he trained too hard. He blew up against a tall Kenyan, Modest Napunyi and the ending was unbelievable, with Armstrong punching instinctively at the referee after the ref had waved it off. It was our own Simon Brown moment.

Always like reading your anaylsis and breakdowns of upcoming fights or anaylsis of fighters!! You seem like a knowledgable and clever guy, remind me alot of myself :DD keep the posts coming Bennie we need more Boxrec posters like you!!

Is the the bout you was on about??

I know Mike quite well through seeing him at the gym nice guy always could have a good crack with him, I think alot of fighters tend to overtrain which alot of arm chair fans dont realise, like when a fighter lacks snap or looks like he is throwing punches underwater they make think not trained hard enough etc.
I heard alot of Manchester fighters in the 80's and early 90's tended to from alot of the fighters!!

Without looking, I am pretty sure his brother (Henry?) was the last man to beat Steve Robinson before Robinson went on his Cindarella run. I seem to remember he copped a piece in the NOTW off the back of it.

They both also had a thai-kick boxing back ground and fought at a good high level I think Kevin still teaches the kids at his gym and Michael fought Ramon Dekker to a well known fighter at the time, again alot of the fighters in them days seemed to have a thai boxing background then turned professional Carl Thompson, Harrison brothers, Phil Nurse etc
