racism in boxing events in the uk
does any1 have any experiences of blatant racism in boxing events, iv noticed that with asian crowds particularly in khans fights theres allot of racism from both sides,
Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
Hate to admit this, but the Khan vs Lawton fight was the worst vibe i have ever encountered in decades of going to fights.doctor wrote:does any1 have any experiences of blatant racism in boxing events, iv noticed that with asian crowds particularly in khans fights theres allot of racism from both sides,
It was shameful.
I saw an Asian couple with their son who was about 12 (first show attended..and prob last), huddled in a corner as stone island Stoke City fan's chanting awful songs. I went over and said 'are you ok? follow me' and they walked with us round to the other side where the khan's fans were - and as I gave the dad a nod to say 'see ya' a load of Asian lads were all jumping up and down in a pack, making gun signals and saying things in a fake Jamaican accent.
It really was a brainless crowd from top to bottom.
Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
It wasn't nice been jewish at the Khan v Salita fight in newcastle.
The poor 'old hats' got some awful abuse.
I wish Khan would distance himself from this radical element.

Yes, you hear it at quite a lot of fights but rarely on a large scale, my missus and I had the misfortune of being stood next to a load of Manc dickheads(Is there any other kind of Manc though? Worse than bloody scousers they are) at Hatton v Maussa shouting "kill the 'spic' bastard!" and stuff like that, my missus is what some people would call a 'spic' too so she didn't take kindly to it.

Its still there, but not as bad as it once was, its the luck of the draw when it comes to who is next to you at a show.
I've had good and bad, once got a seat right in the middle of a load of travellers supporting one of their boxers, thought i'd be lucky to leave with my life. and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable evenings i've had at a show, good laugh with them, and no trouble at all.

The Khan Vs MAB fight had one of the worst atmospheres i've ever had the displeasure to witness.
Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
any khan fight, been to 2 of his fights and thats it for me. Will not be to long before someone gets real hurt in the arena at a khan fight (fans that is) not khan, fighting someone who can punch
Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
youve got to keep your guard up when your at a khan show, some of mathew halls fans are bad for being racist
Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
Saw Crawford Ashley get some at York Hall once, but he shut the tossers up when he flattened Monty Wright. I think it was Johnny Nelson I saw get some nasty stuff at the same venue when he fought Lou Gent.
Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
Darren barkers fans at his last fight.

It's happening already.dazzer wrote:Will not be to long before someone gets real hurt in the arena at a khan fight (fans that is)
Hopefully, in time, venues and promoters will organise security and have the event properlly organised so as to prevent such incidents, and sort out the offenders- as was the case with football from the early 90s onwards. Football grounds are now generally safe places to be. They didn't used to be.
Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
my mate was there at the event and he told me the stoke fans started it and the police did nothing to stop it, iv heard similar stories about some of the fans at the MEN, i was at the berrara fight i can remember the atmosphere being such that you could cut the air with a knife there was allot of racist chatter and i can remember a group of young asian lads who had beer thrown at them by a white lad overlooking them.G0mez wrote:Hate to admit this, but the Khan vs Lawton fight was the worst vibe i have ever encountered in decades of going to fights.doctor wrote:does any1 have any experiences of blatant racism in boxing events, iv noticed that with asian crowds particularly in khans fights theres allot of racism from both sides,

Crawford was all heart in the ring - a cracking fighter.doctor wrote:crawford ashley from leeds i used to train at his gym in dewsbury a while ago it went bust really had some good times at that gym its a pity it went bustchris s wrote:Saw Crawford Ashley get some at York Hall once, but he shut the tossers up when he flattened Monty Wright. Shame his big night came against Miacheal Nunn at a weight too low for him to perform at his best.
Helluva fighter all the same
Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
The first Williams-McDermott fight in Dagenham... some shocking language in there but no aggro outside the ring that I saw... felt like being in the away end at the footy tho... if I hadnt been sitting next to Negus and a cameraman I wouldnt have loudly cheered for Danny - it wasnt that sort of night.

The TV do seem to turn a blind eye to it, not very often any abuse gets talked about.

Seems to me that the obvious thing to do would be for the Board to institute a "Kick racism out of boxing" campaign, much the same as there is in football. It certainly wouldn't hurt for boxers to stick a T shirt on in post-fight interviews and at press conferences and weigh ins etc, would get a message across. And from reading this thread this is clearly something that is bothering British fight fans.

That's the thing. Why would you pay through the nose to take that risk? Would you bring your kid to a show and take that risk? Its still there, but not as bad as it once was, its the luck of the draw when it comes to who is next to you at a show.
And they wonder why the sport is dying?
That's exactly why.
Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
This is going to sound rather ironic, but i was at the Smith V Dodson show, and some yorkshire fellas were behind me to support Kell Brook. They were chanting 'Sieg-kell', at a coloured guy.
Not sure it was racism of any type, but i just thought it was bloody odd indeed

Well the racist beery aggresive elements wont support him, even when he wore the Union Jack and said the right things they didn't. The general sports fans he became a household name to, during the Olympics, simply dont bother attending boxing events , largely due to the aforementioned beery racist aggresive elements.standing8 wrote:It wasn't nice been jewish at the Khan v Salita fight in newcastle.

There have been as documented incidents of his asian supporters being abused at ringside.
So the new radical crowd of kashmiri youth he has as his suport are the backlash to that. This so called "Khans army" he has embraced are composed of many amateur and pro boxers.I know that much from recognising some of them in the crowd and they do speak in a bizarre wanabee jamaican accent also.

Re: racism in boxing events in the uk
Changing the thread slightly, the worse behaviour i saw was not racially motivated.
It was at the Froch vs Dodson fight and a riot broke out with chairs being flung about and everything.
Thing is, due to it being at the Ice Arena (nottingham Trent FM arena as its now called) there is always a large number of familys who normally go to watch the Nottingham panthers Ice hockey.

At the least, someone should at least take a good look at the behaviour of some members of the crowd and ask:Glyn Leach wrote:Seems to me that the obvious thing to do would be for the Board to institute a "Kick racism out of boxing" campaign, much the same as there is in football. 1. Are these people putting others off coming to boxing?
2. Do these people give the sport a bad name?
3. In a sport where many of the participants are of various ethnic and religious backgrounds, are racist fans putting people off taking up the sport? (Which would be a shame, as gyms and boxing clubs don't tend to ever be racist in my opinion. - its the fat f .uck "fans" that are expressing these views.)
IE are promising amateur/juniours not going to professional shows because of other people in the crowd?
