Matthew Hatton interview after retaining European title

Post by nigeltsport »

Matthew Hatton says he wasn't hurt when he was knocked down in the first round against Yuri Nuzhnenko, but says he could have hoped for a better start ! Now that he has retained his European title he will take a short break before deciding on his next move.

Next move - obvious - vacate his european title and bid for a world title - Hatton promotions will probably bid slightly over the odds to ensure home advantage.

Hatton has to be congratulated - I didnt think he would win - I also think it is wrong to say there was any form of robbery - close fight fair enough.

Yep i picked Nuzhnenko to be too all round for Hatton, for me decision could of gone either way, but it wasn't a robbery. Nuzhnenko underestimated Hatton i think.

I think Hatton should be given a lot of credit, obviously he is the less talented of the brothers and well looked after but when it comes down to it it's him who has to do it in the ring.
For a man to lose to David Kirk, Alan Bosworth etc you would bet your mortgage he would not have reached these heights.
He must be congratulated for his hard work and improvement.

For what its worth: the Nuzhnenko camp were not complaining about the decision last night.

Based on last nights performance, Ive got to give a lot of credit to Hatton.

He was hurt despite what he says and I think if the knockdown occured a minute earlier then the Ukranian would have blitzed hm there and then.

I'd like to see a defence against a British fighter as Hatton has yet to prove he's the best welterweight in the North West yet alone Europe. Hatton v Brook, Jennings, O'Donnell or a rematch with Watson would do me.

I agree. Congrats to him but he does seem to have ducked the domestic scene a bit, considering he lost to Craig Watson a couple of years back.

The decision, most people agree, is correct I think. It's the margin that was surprising. Round that appeared close, or going to Nuzhnenko, were given to Hatton by all three judges. Which either suggests his style is one that ctaches a judges eye and wins rounds, or that there was a (subconscious) hometown leaning ie- judges being influenced by cheers when Hatton threw.

Spot on Matthew. What I like about him is that he doesn't brag or trade off the fact that he is Ricky's brother. If anything Ricky's career and publicity held him back. Now he is making waves himself.

Congratulations to Matthew, I'll be the first to admit I thoughts he would lose the fight and actually bet against him. But fair play to him, he keeps improving and it's not inconceivable that he could pick up a world title given the plethora of titles out there. I would still really like to see him in with one of the top British welters; O'Donnell, winner of Jennings/Brook, Bradley Pryce or even a rematch with Craig Watson.
