RIP Mac Foster

Post by The Great John L »

As reported on fightnews. He was a very good HW from a great HW era who probably didn't quite get the respect he deserved.

Does anyone know of any films of Foster that exist besides his bouts with Quarry and Ali?

Foster was supposedly a 6-1 (that sounds high to me) favorite over Quarry the night they fought.

It is said that Sonny Liston was so sure that Mac would beat Quarry that he bet his entire purse from the Wepner fight on Foster.

If someone has the complete transmission broadcast of the nationaly televised
Quarry vrs Foster(Hughs Sports Network)shown in 65 American cities but blacked out in NYC area,
or the complete transmission of the closed-circuit broadcast of Ali vrs Foster.
If there was any footage of Mac Foster's previous bouts,it probably would have shown the footage.
But who would have the complete transmissions on video-tape?
VCR and video-tape were only available commercially since the late 1950's,and really expensive to own and purchase recording video-tape.

I did a quick look through google newspaper archives.
I thought I had found a television listing for Mac Foster vrs Joe Hemphill Nov.27.1968(Fosters 16th pro fight)Silver Slipper Las Vegas,
but it looks like the listing was only for a up coming news article in the LA Times about the fight.

Mac Foster was originally announced to be one of the"Toronto Five",
but was replaced along with Pedro Agosto, about 2 weeks before George Foreman fought in Toronto.
I couldnt find the reason
he was dropped or dropped out of it.

One thing I never understood is why Foster looks like a COMPLETLY different fighter vs Ali than he does vs Quarry. Vs Quarry he looks like a patiently stalking skilled boxer-puncher with a decent jab, albeit a bit stiff.

Vs Ali, he employs an odd semi-bobbing and weaving style, his punches have zero snap, he ducks his head looking at the ground when he throws shots . .in effect he looks downright awful. I remember reading an interview with Foster saying he came into the Ali fight with an injured arm but even that doesn't explain the style change. I always found it very puzzling.

One notable stat about Foster is that he NEVER won a fight by decision . . only by KO.

Here is a link to the January 1970 issue of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED.
Which had an article about Mac Foster.
