Murray
I think he can put on the constant pressure pick his shots to head and body. He is also stronger and could push Mitchell against the ropes and unload. I think he could get to him late or settle for a points win.

murray's defending his title in manchester in a couple of months vs andrei kudriavtsev, a pressure fighter without a big punch but very experienced and crafty.

should be a great fight for murray, at this stage.

bet there won't be any faffing around in there.

Another stellar match-up designed to accelerate Murray's career

kudriavtsev is proper euro level. ppl said that buckland wasn't qualified for the fightand only got the shot for TV date. well, by these standards, kudriavtsev, a former european champ who had 2 exciting fights with mezaache (another former euro champ, who beat thaxton, whom murray wanted when he was euro champ), is qualified to challenge for a european title.

if murray can impressively bash up a european calibre fighter, then this may help him a) learn a few things and b) help him up the ladder. kudriavtsev is no romanov, but he's a solid, decent fighter all the same, and has a more schooled look than his bitter rival, mezaache. i can't imagine kudriavtsev, with his sensible, textbook style, making the kind of lapses that almost cost mezaache (v thaxton) or did cost mezaache (vs carlos vinan, last weekend).

mitchell's yesterday's news and no one cares about murray-mitchell rivalry anymore.

is mitchell still ranked ahead of murray in the boxing monthly domestic ratings?

He really does. Hatton's name keeps getting bandied about as the next stop, promotionally, for Murray. He surely can't do worse than Hennessey. No offence to Mick, but Murray deserves better.

That's harsh.

Mitchell isn't built well enough to cut it at lightweight. But, in my opinion, if he could make super feather again, he'd have a much bigger chance of success at world level.

The super feather division is nowhere near as competitive as the lightweight division.

Barn, I knew you'd try and justify this match, but you're focusing on the 'micro' and missing the 'macro' in your desire to build a case for it.
And the 'macro' is this: An exciting, dynamic fighter like Murray is continually involved in match-ups that will in no way, shape or form capture the public imagination and ultimately advance his career properly.
Sod it, let's tell it like it is, Murray being matched with Kudriavtsev doesn't even remotely exist most 'hardcore' fans, let alone the wider potential crowd!
He's in his prime or approaching it and given his style he won't have great career longevity, so as far as I'm concerned his promotional team is consequently guilty of ineptitude in terms of the way he's being moved.
Oh, and by the way, far more people would be interested in a fight with Mitchell still - if Mitchell's yesterday's news then Kudraivtsev never has been news...

mitchell's too drained at 130, too small at 135.

for murray-mitchell to happen, one of them probably had to lose first. but the manner in which mitchell lost has killed any demand or reason to make the fight.

if Mitchell managed to knock someone like Willie Limond over emphatically, I am sure the Murray fight could still be made...

anyway, kudriavtsev has been ranked above murray in the euro rankings for a while. kudriavtsev lasted about 9 rounds with former WBA champ paulus moses, and he has two absolute belters with mezaache, winning and losing the european title. he isn't a never was. winning the euro title is a big deal, an important step up the ladder for many. wasn't it a big deal with cleverly stopped antonio "punch me, you can't miss" brancalion? won't it be a big deal if someone "gift wraps" kell brook a euro title? jamie moore vs piccirillo, rhodes vs konekny, are fights important to the combatants and the industry. thaxton and rhodes being euro champs have been made a fuss of. so why piss on murray's parade, a headline fight on sky in manchester in defense of a title he's really had to earn (stopping some 3 or 4 top 10 EBU rated guys) the chance to fight for?

no one cares about kudriatsev over here, true, but if murray batters him, then this enhances murray. if he dominates a solid euro level fighter, it helps him make his way towards world level. it doesn't vault him up, but it edges him up. this is how it usually works. some promoters are able to take some serious shortcuts, but you know, sometimes in those cases the fighter's development suffers from the shortcut. (look at the case of mitchell: clearly reacts the wrong way when he takes a big shot, fighting the same way as when he was a domestic operator.)

sure if mitchell improves his standing in the lightweights, there'd be more demand. but then you'd think murray would have more to gain perhaps fighting someone like john molina on shobox hopefully in some kind of eliminator fight.

Murray's had 29 fights now - the time for 'edging up' is long past... at the current rate he'll have edged up to world level around 2015!
He's what, 25-26 now? As a pressure fighter, he's peaking, and he's been and is being moved poorly. There's no getting around that fact however much you want to dress it up.

i can't remember his age. you'd think there'd be more to worry about re fellow polished looking operators martin murray and tony bellew, winning commonwealth titles after turning 26? murray's had a lot of fights but he's a fighter who found his form in the pros, a different route to some of the former ama stars who get fast tracked. seemed to learn at his own pace and deliver when he got the opportunities (slightly overdue).

the times i'd talked to murray and joe gallagher they weren't overjoyed at the pace his career was being pushed forward - i recall a big issue was when murray got the thaxton fight after thaxton had lost to a welterweight, rather than when thaxton was the british and european champion.

my view is that hennessy had too many lightweights - thaxton, meager, stewart, murray - and for a long time it was the jon thaxton show, wasn't it? thankfully in the last fight, in a nice move, murray was able to win the lonsdale belt outright AND take the EBU title. about time, yes, but a productive night also.

i don't see what's wrong with murray vs kudriavtsev. you have an aggressive, experienced operator in the ukrainean fighter. the styles should gel nicely. it is a very good FFN battle. look at some of the recent headliners, jamie mcdonnell vs bracco, for instance. murray v kudry is a good matchup, and a step up the ladder from taking the belt vs buckland.

i can see why boxrec posters aren't especially interested in murray's next challenger. however, i've looked at some of his fights and aftre seeing the controversial 2nd war with mezaache, it does make him more interesting when you've seen someone in a good fight.

kudry-mezaache 2 is up there with the best EBU title fights of recent - munroe-maludrottue, barker-belgechamp, audley-sprott, moore-rhodes (OK not quite that level), thaxton-mezaache. give the guy a break.

totally forgot something.

murray took a long time to get his title shot, despite stopping numerous EBU top 10 ranked fighters.

a guy he beat, lawton, got an EBU title fight before murray. so did matthew hatton, and i believe nathan cleverly.

he's not had the title long, he's had to wait. surely you'll "allow" him to defend the strap at least once? and if kudriavtsev is ranked, then what's the problem?

just been thinking, what an awful matchup henry lundy would have been, for the showtime debut that was offered murray.

lundy did so much running, spinning and turning in his last fight, that i was dizzy watching it. john molina stopped him late, of course, being well behind until the dramatic 11th round finish.

not a fighter to look good against. he's like emmanuel augustus, with his showing off. but molina could be a good fighter to show things against, and a good opportunity, if his power isn't too much of a problem.

Agreed he would of been hell for Murray, I thought Lundy was a very good boxer. Molina-Murray would be a cracker both have fairly slow feet so would stand in front of each other banging away. I would slightly favour Murray late

i think murray would have beaten lundy, but it would have been an ugly showcase & a hard fight. definitely molina would be a hard fight in its own right, but murray has tighter technique and i think he could look good in there, despite it being a dangerous assignment.

while murray got some stick from message board misers for not fighting lundy (even though lundy was a poss replacement for someone else), in hindsight it was wise to wait and see how things played out stateside, while securing the european and british titles.

anyway, back to the european title fight. murray had a long wait for the european title. surely there is no wiser option than to DEFEND the title. and who do you defend against, other than the best available european contender, kudriavtsev?

Autobarn I dunno why you seem to have it in your head that Kudriatsev was a former European champ but he's not, he beat Mezaache in a non title fight and then lost to him when Mezaache was defending the European title(having beaten Thaxton). I'm with you as far as the rest goes though, I know this mightn't be a huge fight in terms of exposure for Murray but I think it's a reasonable step up in class and one that will help prepare him for bigger fights in the future. It's a win that may also push him into the WBA and IBF rankings, and really push towards a World title.
