Tony "Jaffa" Jeffries
I have given Jaffa a lot of stick - some of it maybe undeserved - I am serious when I state I want to see the lad do well - lets forget the banter and bullsh*t but also lets get real about his chances - I certainly disagree with Maloney stating he could be a world champion.
Something is not right with the lad in my view - he certainly did not look like an Olympic Bronze Medalist this evening and in my view hasnt done so for a while - you dont go to the Olympics regardless of how kind the draw is and win a medal if you are an average fighter - but quite simply in my view as Tony has been stepped up we havnt seen that form for a while - some may say harsh - but I honestly believe Jaffa is one hell of a lot better fighter than he is displaying at present.
Lets deal with this b*llocks of the rounds the fight is over - first of all - normally the BBBofC supervisor at the weigh in will confirm the weights and also confirm the number of rounds the fighter is fighting and in addition whether those rounds are 2 minute or 3 minute rounds - "The Whip" is given the running order of the card and if he is anything like what I have known in the past he will confirm to the boxer as he is handing out the gloves the number of rounds the fight is over. Then the ring announcer announces the fight and clearly states what the number of rounds and time of those rounds the fight is over - all this baloney that no one knew what the fight is over is stretching it a tadge as Jaffa was alert enough to have a laugh and and giggle when the announcer initially stated he was an Olympic Gold medalist yet did not notice anything else - further more - did anyone pick up that Jaffa was asking what round it was early on and finally if he honestly felt it was a 6 round fight he certainly did come out all guns blazing in that 6th as if it was the final round.
As for the fight - I thought the draw was a very fair result - if Banbula had realised he was in with a chance in the first 4 rounds it could have got embarassing for Jaffa.
What went wrong:
Throwing predictable single shots.
Dropping the right hand every time he threw his jab.
And something that I thought was very novicy was he seemed to almost throw a right hand as his left jab was coming out - if I am wrong and Jaffa was sticking to the basics then why wasnt the right hand stuck to his head as he was throwing the jab?
I dont know what is wrong but all the mistakes Jaffa is making at the moment is something he simply would not have done as he was on his way to winning the Olympic Bronze - I will state I honestly believe he is a better fighter than he is presently displaying and in my view forget all the hype and b*llocks of fighting in front of his home crowd there is added pressure there - for at least a year or so fight on some undercards in other parts of the country - forget the hype of doing this and that - just get on and box and learn.
In addition Jaffa needs to train with a trainer who is the boss and not him - I thought the corner was poor this evening - Jaffa needed his arse kicking at times tonight and the corner were to considerate of hurting his feelings!!! Bobby Rimmer is a dam good trainer - but for some reason pandered to Jaffa's mood tonight.
Sorry Jaffa and his fans - just the way I see it.

Re: Tony "Jaffa" Jeffries
does this mean we will see you at 2012 spud
he seemed to freeze :!: early on it was cat & mouse & he looked strong, but he was loading up & lost his timing & way & got fiddled out of it, not to mention shockingly gassing out :!:
it was never gonna be easy.

As he is a popular ticket seller, it is certainly possible that he can be manouvered into a Commonwealth route, for example. In 2 or 3 fights (or even sooner) we might see him V Lgbuno (won 6, lost 3, Draw 2, rated 3rd best in Ghana) or similar for a commonwealth title.

Hagler,
Maybe so - but I keep saying it you dont win an Olympic Bronze Medal and perform like Jaffa has done in the last 3 fights if everything is perfectly alright.
Something is wrong. Whether its the diet, training or something else dont know - but its simply not adding up.

Maybe a step up in weight would help, or a step down, or retiring before he gets hammered.whicker wrote:As he is a popular ticket seller, it is certainly possible that he can be manouvered into a Commonwealth route, for example. He's a capable boxer, no need to talk all doom and gloom just yet.

Hagler,
I could easily be harsh on Jaffa like you are - there has been plenty of banter on threads and PMs either way in the past to suggest I could almost gloat like yourself as this is a perfect opportunity - but I will state again I genuinally want to see him do well.

Can you remember the stick I took when I created a ruck over Jaffa wanting to move from Joe Gallagher as he wanted more 1 on 1 coaching - As much as I have my disagreements with Joe - he is a good trainer and could not and still dont understand Jaffa's reasons for leaving - because this one on one training does not seem to be working.hurlock wrote:it's simple the lad need's joe gallgher & spudD
Get your arse into a busy thriving gym where there is no special treatment until you get to championship level and even then you do what the other lads do with regards to graft.

Spud, been from the North East myself I would also like to see him progress as a pro but I'm sorry to say it isn't going to happen! Even if they hired Freddie Roach and Kerry Kayes he would struggle to win an area title.Spud wrote:Hagler,

Re: Tony "Jaffa" Jeffries
I've read jeffries commenting on advice from steve collins about alienating fan's from the north east with all the sunderland stuff etc & him trying to compete in a tweet off with football star's, it's things like this that make me think there's too much going on iin is head rather then the job in hand. he finished at the top in the ams & has started @ the bottom of the pro's im not sure if he can make it but i certainly wont write him off.as you've stated jeffries is alot better then that.

I can tell you now, ask 45,000 fans going into the Stadium of light for the first home game of the season in August who Tony Jeffries is and 42,000 of them wouldn't have a clue.hurlock wrote:I've read jeffries commenting on advice from steve collins about alienating fan's from the north east with all the sunderland stuff etc & him trying to compete in a tweet off with football star's, it's things like this that make me think there's too much going on iin is head rather then the job in hand. he finished at the top in the ams & has started @ the bottom of the pro's im not sure if he can make it but i certainly wont write him off.as you've stated jeffries is alot better then that.

Not a lot I would disagree with your post.hurlock wrote:I've read jeffries commenting on advice from steve collins about alienating fan's from the north east with all the sunderland stuff etc & him trying to compete in a tweet off with football star's, it's things like this that make me think there's too much going on iin is head rather then the job in hand. he finished at the top in the ams & has started @ the bottom of the pro's im not sure if he can make it but i certainly wont write him off.as you've stated jeffries is alot better then that.
I look at Clinton Woods there were loads of people who stated he would never win anything - he did okay for himself. I remember after a couple of fights Clinton complained of being lethargic etc etc and eventually it was sussed that he had problems with his diet. Is that the problem with Jaffa?
I am not stating Jaffa will win any world title - but he is certainly very very novicy and not showing the form of an ex top amateur boxer.
I honestly believe a bit of "humble pie" will do the trick and either let Bobby Rimmer be completely in charge and rule the roost or change to a trainer who will not have a fighter who dictates the terms.

I seem to be getting a bit of a pasting here! I'll just start going along with the bandwagon hoping that Tony will improve and go onto win a world title against Chad Dawson or Jean Pascal.

Re: Tony "Jaffa" Jeffries
I was disappointed with Jeffries tonight. I've been impressed with him in some other fights, the body punch one where he cut the other fella in half being one. Tonight though I sensed that the lad had no jab whatsoever and when he tries to tee off with a big punch its predictable because he moves his whole body in before doing so. I hope the lad can go far because I have watched him with interest since he started out as a pro. Tonights performance was a real eye opener though as to what he is/isn't capable of.
I hope the lad can improve I really do as he seems a likeable type of person and has a confidence in himself, which is always a good thing to have. I hope hes hurting after tonights performance and can correct some of the elementary problems he has come up against in his fledgling pro career.

I agree with Hagler on the corner thing. He seemed to spit his dummy out(and his gumshield). It reminded me of Froch against Kessler where you are dying for the corner just to tell them straight and instead get a softly softly, come on son, approach.Or,in the case of Rimmer,"F**king sort it out".Frank Hopkins was trying to tell him but was respectful of Rimmer's position. Its like when Dean Powell is doing the cuts in some of the less experienced chief trainers corners(Cleverley,Arnie,Wright in the past),he just tells it how it is anyway!

I think Audley Harrison has shown that successful amateur doesn't always mean good boxer.

Re: Tony "Jaffa" Jeffries
i want to start by saying i have nothing against the lad, but oh my god.
he stunk. its that simple. his last few fights he has looked bellow average, and last night topped it off for me.
if that fight would have went another round or two then he would have been stoped.
there is no excuse what so ever for a boxer saying after 6 rounds am too tired, his corner had to nearly drag him out.
can some1 please tell me how a boxer who as been a pro as long as jaffa can be so tired after a few rounds? he could barley keep his hands up after5-6 rounds.
he made a very poor excuse in the interview saying he hurt his arm a week before the fight. even if he did, that shouldnt have you blowing after 4 rounds, the hard work has been done in the first few weeks of training and in the last week even if he couldnty train as hard as the other weeks you dont lose fitness that quick. and its also funny the way in the first few rounds we didnt see no problem with his arm.
there is deffo something wrong with him, iv never realy rated him at all, but on his last few performances he looks like he wont even get near a title in his life.
hopefully he can prove me wrong, but on what iv seen i doubt that very much

Re: Tony "Jaffa" Jeffries
he needs to get away form fighting in sunderland so often puts to much pressue on him this stage of his career, and i think he needs to change his team as its not really working out for him
Re: Tony "Jaffa" Jeffries
He needs to get himself to the docs, something amiss as he is not physically right.
Looked like a guy I know that had anemia. He was eating plenty of iron rich food, but couldn't ingest it properly and had a disorder called celiac disease. It was wheat products that was inflaming him and stopping him ingesting iron and other nutrients. He started with it after taking up running, as he started putting his body through it's paces, doing longer runs, he suddenly found himself not being able to do the smaller runs he originally did easily.
Either something like the above, or over-training. Hammer yourself in camp and then you'll flood with cortisol and be in shit street get you really need your reserves.
