I feel your pain man....My son fought a kid and his parents are both judges and ref's....The damn ref
was wasting time and not letting them work...The other kid was holding and they blamed my son for it....it was horrible....They don't seem to understand how hard kids work for this tournament and how easy it is for them to have the fight scored before the fighters are in the ring.

they should ban kids parents from being judges.my friends kid had a similar situation.
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
i can agree and disagree with your comment.. the reason why is because if you were an official would you travel to a different state just to judge? remember you dont get paid and you dont get free room. i am an official but i dont judge when my son is in a bout.i do agree that a parent of a boxer should not judge a sons or daughters bouts. but also becarefull with having a judge from the same gym judging a bout.. i seen some nasty things happen.LongBeachoioioi wrote:they should ban kids parents from being judges.my friends kid had a similar situation.

Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
The judging was ridiculous!!! I consider myself 2 be an honest person & when it comes 2 defeat I can accept it when it is deserved, BUT when a fighter works his his "you know what off" for the past 9 months only 2 be robbed of what is clearly his win is a great disgrace & injustice to say the least. My team took 4 fighters, with 3 of them being clearly & undoubtedly robbed of their win!
Before the last fight for our gym on Saturday, I told my fighter "Don't let the judges rob you too of your belt, don't let it get to the score cards, you knock this guy out & teach those judges a lesson"!! So second round RSC! We got at least our One BELT, but I know they would of robbed us on that one too. (BPBC)
This wasn't just happening 2 us, it happened 2 other gyms as well, as I seen it happening way too many times this year!!
I'm not saying it was all of them, but it seemed like either they were simply incompetent judges, or were being bias towards the gyms they did not like! Its just wrong & unfair 2 the kids!
Looks like from now on we gotta tell these kids 2 sit their opponents down or u will lose.
I know a lot of gyms & individuals (particularly certain officials) still have a lot of hate of our gym, but the culprits of the past era are long gone & we are a new Boxing Club & team. So cut us some slack....but if not, bring it on!! lol cuz we just gonna train even harder! ;)

Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
it wasnt all So CAL fighters getting favoritism, just 2 or 3 gyms from LA. It was pretty awful and very unfair. I understand parents werent allowed to judge their own child, but they were allowed to judge their childs teammates. So riddle me this,....if a bout is "close" and you know the losing parent is going to be upset, would you rather upset a parent you will likely never see again, or the parent you have to see everyday at the gym when you pick up your son/daughter? So anything close is going to your gym. Right there, the playing field is no longer level. As a judge, your feel pressure and are only relieved when your gym clearly wins and you know there wont be any controversy. When your gym is getting beat, you try to keep the scorecard close and hope your teammate can finish strong and make a comeback. Anyone that was paying attention knows we are all talking about ring 1 (there were 3 rings). One of my fighters got beat, fair and square, by a boxer from one of those favored gyms. A good fighter, and he beat us fair and square. Another one of my fighters fell victim to the ring 1 mystery. Immediately after the 3rd round ended, in a fight my kid had an easy time with and was dominant, I watched from a top the apron as one judge filled out his scorecard. I dont have eagle eyes, but he appeared to be making marks in the boxes for rounds 1,2, or 3? There were no warning or point deductions in the bout, and from a distance, it appeared our opponent was still scoring blows on this scorecard even though the bout was over, the headgears and gloves were off, and the judge was simply supposed to do the arithmatic and add up the numbers? What markings need to be added to rounds 1,2, or 3 if the bout is over??? Sure enough, that judge gave the bout to the so-cal boxer. We lost a 2-1 split. I checked the scorecards: 1 judge gave us every round and the bout. 1 judge had us losing the bout by 1 point. 1 judge had us losing a little bigger. On that judge, it appears a "1" was converted to a "7", either that, or this judge writes sevens with very verticle line. That same scorecard also had an "8" with a flattop that was clearly a converted "7".
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
I have heard of this kind of officiating before in Coachilla in the past, probable will never change. Our club has decided not to ever return. Junior Golden Gloves Nationals was the place to be.When parents get involved we always can mess **it up for all the kids.

Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
You nailed it right on the money Dangercoach!!! I seen the same stuff going on, but I didn't ask 2 see the score cards. I'd complain, but then it would probably only make things worst.
One judge relocated his wheelchair to the opposite side of the ring in the middle of the fight, another was paying more attention to the nuts he was munching on, & another looked like he couldn't see anything out of those coke bottles.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate officials donating their time, I just wish things 2 improve for the sake of the kids & the sport.
Initially, we were not planning a return next year, but that's something we'll have 2 consider for next year.

Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
Believe me, some SoCal gyms fell victim to the same mystery, when they were up against that same clique of gyms from L.A. It just wasnt a level playing field. Its too bad too, because the beneficiary gyms are actually pretty good without the help, and have some pretty skilled boxers. It was getting so bad though, that even when their boxers had legit wins, the other coaches and parents looked at those wins as tainted and complained, which is unfair to victorious boxer. Everyone loses when the officiating isnt fair and impartial. No matter what gym you came from, your kids worked hard to prepare, you took time off work to attend, you did some fundraising to pay for the trip..etc etc. I realize the officials are volunteers, but if they felt under any pressure to see their kids teammates win, they should have stepped away from those bouts and maybe timekept, or rested, or traded with an unbiased judge from another ring. It wasnt the end of the word, it wasnt the olympic gold medal, and it wasnt the million dollar professional contract, so my boxer got over it pretty fast and showed a lot of class. I am over it too, although seeing one other little boy leave crying after being victimized in the finals( and he was victimized because I watched that bout and no matter what angle you were sitting at, it was a one-sided dominant affair!), was frustrating to see. We had a fun week, and will likely be back next year, crossing our fingers that maybe we get a more nuetral ring. If there is another tournament during that week though, we will go to the other one.
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
I doubt anyone can post results as Bout sheets were never handed out. Some very good bouts though.A few real slugfests.!!!
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
Wasn't there and never go. Just have a couple of general opinions:
It's unfair to say that Southern California officials are biased against Northern California clubs. Most of the SoCal officials have no idea who the clubs are.
With the exception of a few officials who come from out of the area, since the tournament is a local event most of the officials will be from SoCal. It would definitely level out the playing field if officials from other LBCs would come - but they don't. So you're stuck with what's available.
Guess you have two choices: (1) don't participate any more or (2) continue to come for the ring experience it provides. And do your best to bring officials with you.

Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
OBVIOUSLY BOXMEL IS SOMEWHAT TRYING TO STICK UP FOR THE OFFICIALS AND THAT IS WHY IT WILL NEVER END BECAUSE THE GOOD OFFICIALS WONT STAND UP AND SAY SOMETHING THEY JUST TURN A BLIND EYE AND SAY HEY THAN DONT PARTICIPATE OR GO TO GET RING EXP. THATS BULL WE GO TO WIN THATS WHAT THIS SPORT IS ALL ABOUT THE WAY JUDGING IS DONE KNOW NEEDS TO CHANGE OR OUR SPORT OF BOXING WILL CONTINUE TO BE MESSED UP WITH THESE SO CALLED OFFICIALS WHO ARE REALLY AVERAGE JOES WHO PAID A LITTLE MONEY TOOK A TEST A CHILD COULD PASS NOW ARE KIDS FUTURE IN THIS SPORT ARE IN THEIR HANDS RIDICULOUS AND WE SHOULDNT HAVE TO BRING JUDGES WE BRING FIGHTERS NOT JUDGES NOT TIME KEEPERS NOT CROOKED OFFICIALS WE BRING BOXERS.......

Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
Mel, I, for one, do not believe the southern CA judges were biased against the northern CA fighters. My observation was simply that a group of 2 or 3 southern CA clubs(gyms) benifited from biased judging in Ring 1 ( sometimes even against other sourthern CA gyms, other states, etc, not only Northern CA). That was just my observation and opinion, thats all. I know many socal coaches and judges, and believe I have friendships with many of them. Ring 1's judging performance, however, was pretty poor and frankly, in my opinion, they embarrased themselves with some of their ridicoulus decisions. But it wasnt an anti-north conspiracy.
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
Seems the clubs should get out and vote for new Chief Official(s). They usually run/set up clinics and assign judges/ref.
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
Now, the above statement is total BS!!!! I was just trying to explain why there were few officials and why most are from the SoCal LBC. I wasn't there so I can't "stick up" or not "stick up" for the officials and officiating.OBVIOUSLY BOXMEL IS SOMEWHAT TRYING TO STICK UP FOR THE OFFICIALS
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
Our elections are in December - but have no idea how a new COO would change things at the Desert Showdown. You have to use the officials who are there and if you only have the bare minimum..........Seems the clubs should get out and vote for new Chief Official(s). They usually run/set up clinics and assign judges/ref.
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
I understand that but at least (hopefully) things will improve if you have a CO who really cares.
After reading these posts now I know why coaches want officials from our region to go to tournaments also.

This is such a shame that a bunch of adults have to get on a forum and discuss this crap so much for it being all about the kids
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
A caring CO won't make much of a difference if there are the bare minimum of officials. :(I understand that but at least (hopefully) things will improve if you have a CO who really cares.
Believe it or not, tournaments also want officials from other LBCs/regions.After reading these posts now I know why coaches want officials from our region to go to tournaments also.
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
Unfortunately, videos only show one point of view rather than those seen by 3 or 5 judges.you should post videos of the fights and see if people agree with you that your guy lost
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
And the reason for your above statement is.......??? I think any discussion about improvements or changes in USA Boxing, locally, regionally, nationally, is all about the kids. Discussion is good as long as it isn't just bad-mannered whining. This is such a shame that a bunch of adults have to get on a forum and discuss this crap so much for it being all about the kids

Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
Most of these cases arent bad mannered whining there pissed off coaches parents and boxers that have very few outlets to show there anger towards how they have been robbed by usa boxing judges and for you to call it whining is disrespectful to the kids and coaches who put so much time in training and traveling to these competitions only to be robbed because you dont belong to the favored gym .....
Re: DESERT SHOWDOWN FAVORITISM TO SO CAL FIGHTERS
Did I, at any time, specifically state that ANY of the posts on this thread were whining? I don't think so.and for you to call it whining is disrespectful to the kids and coaches who put so much time in training and traveling to these competitions only to be robbed because you dont belong to the favored gym .....
