USA boxers compete in Great Britain vs Rest of the World

Post by Dennis »

Duran Caferro boxed Tom Stalker and lost 16-11
Errol Spence boxed Fred Evans and won 15-9
Stalker is one of GB's top boxers while Evans is not. GB has some really good amateurs in the lower weight classes and some decent HW's, but they are lacking in the 69kg, 75kg and 81kg weight classes.

How were these boxers selected? I still don't understand the process of selecting athletes for intl competition or duals. Can you enlighten me?

I believe both Duran and Spence beat GB boxers when they were here last fall and GB requested them for this competition.
The most recent US Champs will be invited to box internationally soon.

CITF has operated in secrecy for at least the last 5 years. Their selection process is always unknown to the boxing public. The USA National Champs get a lot of trips, but after that who knows.

OK, all I heard was that they were requested by GB. I thought they might have both won and GB was looking for payback.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and guess that the Brits may have requested Caferro because he actually comes to fight instead of jab and hug for 3 rounds. He and Stalker was probably a pretty entertaining fight I imagine, Stalker's also pretty tall and quick.

Duran probably gave Stalker a tough bout as indicated by the score. Stalker is a very good boxer as shown by his silver medal at the 2010 European Championships.

Also, the reason Caferro went was because he was ranked #1 at the time of selection.

The awards were almost exclusively as a JO boxer (Cadet, Youth, etc.) and he has not done much as a senior boxer. Being their best at 69kg does not mean that he is world class. They didn't even send him to the 2010 European Championships.

I believe that it is an honor to be selected to box on this level. Our fighters job is to get in the best shape the can possible get in. If the didn't bring there best that is not our fault. Errol Spence beat who they put in front of him.

Errol is very good and did what he had to do. However, I am just pointing out that his GB opponent is not a world beater.

We will see how good Fred Evans is as he will have a chance to box Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan this weekend. Sapiyev won two world championships - 2005, 2007 and won a bronze in the 2009 Worlds. That will be a true test to see how good Evans really is.
