Junior Witter v Matthew Hatton

Post by SteveDow »

I read on BS today that Junior Witter is targetting a comeback fight against Matthew Hatton for his European title.

How do you guys think this would go if it came off?

I could see Witter winning a wide points decision or stopping Hatton late on. I've always thought Matthew Hatton was very limited as a fighter both offensively and defensively and could see Witter (who would be fired up given it would be his last chance) producing a good performance and outclassing him.

Junior sitting down on his shots early and bombing Hatton out in two rounds. And I'm anti-Witter.

hmm, i am not sure, i think the new improved Matty Hatty could fiddle his way to winning a couple of rounds against a lazy Witter.

It would be interesting if Witter absolutely destroyed Matthew Hatton whether Ricky would then fancy a comeback for one last fight to get revenge over Witter. The fight would still be a huge seller in the UK.

My opinion is based on the fact that Hatton was hurt badly against both Nuzhnenko and Branco in the first round, and if Junior has anything left, I believe he'll do the same, but finish the job. If Witter shows little, then Hatton could do as you say. Hatton, to me, is ripe for a KO1 loss, though.

Either Hatton wouldn't touch Witter with a bargepole, even at this stage of Witter's career.

Rancour? Sorry, my vocabulary isn't as wide as yours. Is 'rancour' a sexual term?

Dr Craig Mackay postulates several scenarios. Well, three.

If only boxing were this straightforward - we would all be very happy people (either that or find something else to complain about!). If Ricky were prepared to have one more fight then I can't see a loser in this scenario and Junior would surely jump at the chance.

Like either fighter would contemplate the scenario where they line Witter's pockets.

Well it depends on whether or not Ricky sees himself as a genuine businessman and promoter now or not. To make a lot of money in any business and become top promoter then Ricky will have to deal with people he doesn't like. In any of the scenarios the Hatton's will profit.

short term, they may profit, but how can you milk a fighter/title when it no longer is marketable i.e. you don't have it?

No way will they pay Witter a decent purse when they can get someone from the lower echelons of the EBU rankings for peanuts, or worse still, somehow engineer a world title shot.

If Witter beat both Hattons, if the contract was tight, then the Hattons would promote his next X amount of fight, it could just be one big fight but it would be massive if he was coming off the back of two wins. Therefore the Hattons could make a fortune through the show/TV etc. etc. but it would also be a massive carrot for boxers they want to sign - e.g. showcased on TV on the undercard of huge bills.

Of course they could get an easier/cheaper voluntary for Matthew but it doesn't lead to the possibility of superfights that would line the Hatton's pockets even if Matthew lost.

The way I see it, if they signed Witter-Matthew under the stipulations mentioned in the article then they either have a fantastic win for Matthew which would be the biggest of his career or a back up of making a shed load of cash - even if Ricky couldn't beat Junior.

If Matt fights for a world title and loses in his next fight, whats the back-up plan then?

Junior was the WBC champion and still nobody made a "fortune" out of him.He was boxing at the Doncaster Dome!

He hadn't beat Ricky Hatton on a PPV then though had he? Of course no-one will make a fortune out of Witter right now but they could if he beat both Hatton's back-back. Then the general public would know his name and people in the boxing world would be forced to sit up and take note.

It doesnt work like that, though.Even if he was to beat both, everyone would say Matthew was crap and Ricky shot.If Ricky does box on,people will be begging him not to,BN,FW's column in The Sun,etc.A win would be tarnished before they got into the ring.
Also, beating a crossover star does not make you one. After beating McGuigan,Jimmy Mac wasnt hero worshipped the same, was he?
There are loads more examples.
Anyway, none of these fights are going to happen.Junior himself looked absolutely terrible in his last outing when he quit, has done his knee in and is not exactly young.Oh,and he was overated in the first place.

What you on about? You're speculating massively and assuming all sorts of things.

PPVs?

This is crazy talk, we're talking about Junior "3 fans" Witter.

That was the whole point of Hatton's complete reluctance to even entertain a fight with Witter - he brought nothing to the table - no fans, no money, no interest.

Right now he has nothing - Even less fans, no money and no interest. Why would/should Hatton promotions generate some money and a title for him? More importantly, why would Ricky WANT to?

Hatton right now is doing FNF fayre, small hall shows with a few 100 punters. He's not doing PPV worthy shows. You can spin Matthew Hatton all you like but he will NEVER do a PPV.

Junior blows too hot and cold; one fight he looks devastating and in the next he seems half bothered. Then he doesn't box for 12 months. Matthew is not as gifted a boxer as Junior but he is getting regular work and is improving steadily + he has a good chin; I can't see Junior bombing him. I don't think it'd be a good clash of styles and I think Matthew would get the nod. (Ricky v Junior 7 or so years ago would have been awesome).

That would be a very intresting fight, Hatton has improved over the last few fights and Witter has seemingly lost a bit. Should be an intresting one. I would fancy Witter on a close, competitive decision
