Kid Gavilan v Emile Griffith

Post by Ezzard »

2 absolute Rolls Royce fighters.

Both men in with a shout for #2 at 147. Both men candidates for top 20 P4P.

I imagine this one goes the distance but who do you think wins?

I've always found this one impossible to call. SD one way or another with 10 or 11 swing rounds. Two of histories greatest fighters. I've posed this myself and never gotten an answer. I wish I could give you one.

assuming 15 rounds I think Griffiths takes this. though i do think there's a chance that over 12, Gavilan could just open a big enough lead early to hold onto a narrow points win. either way i think i see Griffiths starting slower and warming to the task as each round goes by.

Griffith edges it if he doesn't get into a war with Gavilan.

My feeling is that whoever lost the split decision in the first fight would win it in the rematch.

Griffith could be guilty of sometimes going through the motions (or at least seeming like it).

I don't see a single definitive edge for either guy in any category. Griffith probably had more power and Gavilan had a bit better beard. But there really is nowhere for separation between them. Razor close distance fight 100 times out of 100.

...right...two split-decision kings probably meet three times and fight to a split decision three times......in fast good action battles.

It is almost cruel to ask a fight fan who would win...you are only setting us up for torture as we ponder it.

I will add myself to the list of people who genuinely have no idea how this'd turn out.

This one for me is too hard to call. Two all-time great welterweights when at their very best, were very, very, very hard to beat.
