John Murray and Ajose Olusegun given WBC final eliminators

Post by dondada »

Good stuff...though as we all know, this doesn't always mean a shot, even if they win. Hope so though, if they fancy it.

Seems Olusegun is a little closer to the WBC title than Murray from that report..... Ali Chabah is a good little operator, and I guess Algeria must be considered his "home patch" - not sure of his history I thought he was French/Canadian... but seems to have fought alot in Algeria also.

Chabah is a favourite of Eurosport, so there is plenty of footage for him. Intriguing little fight - I have the feeling Chabah might be too slick for him, but its winnable. I would give Olusegun clear advantages in strength.

I haven't seen that much of Estrada, what little I've seen he looks impressive.... big ask for Murray if its in Mexico.

Estrada's record looks pretty tidy, but I haven't seen anything of him.

Rendall Munroe's last opponent, Victor Terrazas, came across with a similar type of record, but he was very disappointing.

It needs to hopefully be a good, strong test for Murray. As he needs to be tested more against a better class of opponent. Especially if he wants to do himself justice when stepping up to World level.

Should be an interesting fight!

Not on a site, via private email :TU:

This was the first time I've seen it on a site. Then saw the thread over at t'other place.
It was on Fight News before here but they just put the whole shebang up whereas, as you know, I have to edit bullshine out of these things. :TU:

Did try the WBC site once I'd heard but their site is awful. A glorified ad for Jose 'I will slap your face' Sulliedarse.

Nice music, though -- I was grooving along to the beat.
Nah, they've got a new site now. None of the kitsch romance of the old piece of sh1t but still quite a few ricks.

the WBC title seems to be busy. i thought soto was defending vs barrera, making as much money as he can vs has beens (he also fought jesus chavez and david diaz) before vacating the title to avoid anthony peterson (top rank's next lightweight hope) and to pursue a light welterweight world title.

now, antillon and demarco are also contenders for soto??

F*ck knows mate. I often think I shouldn't even bother reporting on what the boards do because they are so blatantly sh1t it's unbelievable. I just wish they'd all go away.

But the boxers (and the fans) still chase the titles...

looks like the WBC are trying to cram as many mexicans into the rankings as they can, doesn't it?

suddenly this daniel estrada gets nominated for an eliminator. has anyone heard of him?

antonio demarco, absolutely thrashed by valero, gets nominated to fight soto in another WBC title fight.

likewise, urbano antillon - a cracking body puncher - has already been outboxed and stopped by the current champ, albeit in the WBA, miguel acosta.

good to hear that, though things have been slow, that murray is climbing the rankings.

think olusegun has had plenty of chances over here and has looked poor a few too many times. bet he'll have to travel for his title shot. if the champ has 2 belts, i wouldn't be surprised if the champ vacates.

To be fair though Autobarn. How many American's/Mexican's will be thinking - "John who?".

There's been a comment that Murray's chance is long overdue - is, and I'm trying to be fair, victories over the likes of Gary Buckland (how Buckland was nominated for the prestigious EBU title is beyond me) and a faded John Thaxton worthy of a mandatory status.

Yes, I would agree, he is more worthy than Estrada, but I would think there are a few other fighters who would be angered they haven't had this opportunity.

i think when he stops a genuine euro level guy, like kudriavtsev, then that sort of justifies it. you don't have to beat a top contender to be a top contender. you can demolish a top 20 guy and that can get you in the top 10. thaxton was obviously an ex EBU champ so when murray got hold of him shortly after he'd been dethroned, maybe that counted for a lot. also, perhaps getting ducked by mezaache, who will have disappeared from the WBC ratings after being stopped by a journeyman, could have enhanced his rating. obviously lobbying and all that, can get a fighter recognised.

when murray was british champ he was stopping guys that were top 10 in the EBU. so when you hold the EBU and, say, beat up an ex champ, it goes some way. it's indirect but it works, especially if there isn't the money or the demand to make the fights between the contenders.

So is Murray's next Euro defence in Sept. the final eliminator? Or does it mean he'd have to fight someone else after that?

Yeah, Kudriavstev is better than his record suggest. Don't get me wrong its not a massive disservice that John in line to be Mandatory. I think he warrants a top ten placing now, just do think there might be more deserving #1 contenders out there - I think the likes of Funeka, Guerrero, Linares, Peterson, and a couple of others might be considered more worthy - but that's about it.

Thaxton had lost two on the spin when he fought John - so I don't think in the grand scheme of things that should have counted for that much on the world scene.

yeah but you could also say that thaxton's previous LIGHTWEIGHT fight was a very controversial defeat to mezaache, a really good fight, very, very close. for the title, a title that he'd won via sensational KO not long before. i don't think the welterweight fight would have affected thaxton's lightweight ranking too badly. thaxton was a bit hard done by with the mezaache 1st rounf episode and maybe this had a bearing, also.
