Correct birthdate of fighter

Post by JayJay »

Editors: Please correct the birthdate of boxer Otis Griffin of Sacramento. It should read 8/22/1978, meaning he will be 32 years old then. He is 31 years old until then. (Jim Jenkins, Sacramento Bee newspaper)

Hi Jim,
It's the age old catch 22 with the commissions.

The ABC requires us to list the boxers birthdate, but the CSAC does not list it in their results sheet.
The 2010 FightTax RB on page 161 list the same date we have, which we took from a report on the
Florida Boxing Commission site.

As a newspaper reporter, I don't deal in birth certificates. I do know the California Athletic Commission has the correct birthday, Florida notwithstanding. If you choose to let the error stand, so be it. Just trying to help. JJ

We do not let any error stand; Jay.
I was hoping I wouldn't have to call the CSAC...again.

Otis Griffin's date of birth is 22 August 1977 on the California public records from when he was living at addresses in Santa Maria and Rancho Cordova - one of them dated 1996. Where did the 1978 birthdate come from if, as a newspaper reporter, you don't see it in your remit to do public record checks when questions like this come up?

I don't know who you are, but I have done too many favors for this website, via other editors, in reporting results, updates, etc. over the years from Sacramento, primarily Don Chargin promoted cards, to receive an insult like this. Apology, is in order, sir. I was merely trying to inform you of a possible error, raised by the fighter. My copy desk is using birthdate in your records as well until we get further confirmation, and I so informed Mr. Griffin. Jim

I don't know who you are either, apart from name and newspaper, but that's irrelevant. I'm not an editor of the forum. Let's go through this again.

1. You tell boxrec that Otis Griffin was born in August 1978 not August 1977, as the site has it, but offer no evidence to back your statement.
2. An editor responds politely asking for evidence in the shape of a birth certificate. No doubt other official evidence would have done.
3. You react by saying as a newspaper reporter you don't deal in birth certificates, and appear to go into a sulk: "If you choose to let the error stand, so be it". Did you really think your stature, as a reporter on the Sacramento Bee, was so immense that boxrec would accept your information at face value?
4. After another polite reply from the editor, I take 5 minutes to check the California public records and find a date of birth for Griffin, from the mid-90s, of August 1977. I ask where the 1978 birthdate came from if, as a newspaper reporter, you don't see it in your remit to do public record checks.
5. You declare yourself insulted and demand an apology, but backtrack by calling boxrec's date of birth only a 'possible error' and reveal that your source is Griffin himself, who, assuming you have understood him correctly, would not be the first and certainly won't be the last boxer to enter his 30s and try to knock a year or two off his age. Apology? I don't think so.

You are certainly a contrast to the editor the at site I helped in past. Should he contact me again for help, I will be glad to assist, and I will keep your response on file. Good job contacting the California AtCom, although the office is under a new executive office. Good luck.
