I think this is a great idea to make the selection process fair, promote competition and get all the 2012 prospects used to fighting in front of a big home crowd....

brilliant idea to make podium squad selection fairer...
Re: brilliant idea to make podium squad selection fairer...
McCracken was on Bunces show last night discussing it, sounds like a good idea.
Re: brilliant idea to make podium squad selection fairer...
Sounds like a great idea but from experience, when A beats B doesn't necessarily mean they're better or more equipped to box in a big multi-nations tournament!
When a boxer is the recognised number one for the national squad(Now GB) and is there week in week out receiving the benefits of top training and sparring then it makes sense to send them to the tournaments to get the experience.
Just because a kid comes along and does well in one tournament which is home based and familiar, doesn't mean they should get the main boxer's place.
The GB team aren't stupid, Robert McCracken is one of the best things to happen to amateur boxing in the UK in a long time and in my opinion and they'll get the results in the end

From what McCracken was saying last night, it sounds like if a kid does well he gets the chance to be assesed up close by the England management, rather than getting the number one spot automaticallySmigga wrote:Sounds like a great idea but from experience, when A beats B doesn't necessarily mean they're better or more equipped to box in a big multi-nations tournament!

Re: brilliant idea to make podium squad selection fairer...
so assuming they have like a year and a half to sort the best squad... why not publish like a league table? everyone who is interested in qualifying (up to a suitable amount) get them to box home and away against all the others as many times as possible under olympic conditions... say that 8 hopefuls fight eachother 4 times each in that time.... that should produce either one clear winner or two very good choices.
