Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
In the light of the news of his eliminator for the WBC, and talk that he wants to fight the likes of Katsidis, Diaz and Marquez, do you think he is ready to top the bill at the M.E.N.?
Those fights will obviously be too big for Leisure Centres where he has recently been topping bills. But I don't think he has the pull with the general public required to fill an arena, even though he has a crowd-pleasing style. Unless it was topping a bill similar to the Mag. 7
Hatton was topping bills at the same arena before he fought Tszyu. That's not a dig at Murray, as I'm a huge fan, just putting it into persepctive.
What are alternative venues for these fights then?
Thoughts....

Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
Maybe for Katsidis, with a solid undercard and the upper tier closed. Its a huge venue, and on nights such as Harrison-Brodie,Brodie-Chi,Gomez-Alvarez and even Khan-Prescott and Khan-Kotelnik it looks bad when there are so many empty seats.Even Calzaghe-Lacy didnt come close to filling it.Maybe the Velodrome as an alternative?
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
if he fought katsidis i think itd definatly sell. with a good undercard ofcourse. what a fight it would be too! murray v marquez would sell aswell. has anyone seen much of the mexican he's got in his eliminator?
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
After Katsidis raised his profile over here by stopping Mitchell, I reckon Murray-Katsidis could be a big seller.
Not sure if Hennessy could lay on the sort of undercard that Warren did at West Ham, though.

Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
murray's not fought that often in manchester itself, and also he's not had a popular ticket seller that he could build his fan base off (like hatton from gomez and farnell). it's like murray came up in a void. isn't the next fight, for the european title, in manchester? and also if they bring the mexican daniel estrada over, in an important WBC elim, this can all help murray's profile. especially if he delivers, and in exciting fashion.
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
I can't see there being much boxing at the MEN for years now, unless they do a half hall or something, or someone like Mayweather comes over.
Or a David Haye fight.
Or a David Haye fight.
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
murray is a tough manchester street kid, i feel he'd have it anywhere. i really like his approach, he mean's buisness
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
The undercard that resulted in most of them ending in one-sided early round stoppages? Yes Mick would have to pull out all the stops to match those classic displays of pugilism!Terrrrry wrote:After Katsidis raised his profile over here by stopping Mitchell, I reckon Murray-Katsidis could be a big seller.

fw has the best prospect's he took of mitchell's l-plates & he got exposed, the other's followed the script 8)

I wasn't caning Hennessy, if that's what you were thinking.The_Don1 wrote:The undercard that resulted in most of them ending in one-sided early round stoppages? Yes Mick would have to pull out all the stops to match those classic displays of pugilism!
Just saying that I don't feel that Hennesy has the undercard attractions that Warren can put out.
The best Hennessy could do is maybe stick Tyson Fury on the undercard. Or, at a long shot, maybe some kind of tune up for Junior Witter. The only other option would maybe some kind of double header, with Darren Barker and John Murray both going for decent titles.
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
What about Witter vs M. Hatton & Murray vs. Katsidis? With a few Manchester fighters on the undercard. I think FW has raised the bar with the Mag 7 bill and if this type of thing was repeated it could shift a lot of tickets.Terrrrry wrote:Terrrrry wrote:After Katsidis raised his profile over here by stopping Mitchell, I reckon Murray-Katsidis could be a big seller.

In answer to the question in the thread title - absolutely.
Murray is one dam good gutsy fighter.

Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
he seems to have some exciting options. maybe katsidis would be best to establish him - a make or break fight maybe - as an attraction in manchester. despite the WBC elim news i think the katsidis fight is the tempting, tasty one.
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
I think a lot will depend on his promoter, and how he views Murray. Kastidis is winnable I think, but very very very tough. It might just break him, and the big question would be what that would do for Murray and the promoter after.Autobarn wrote:he seems to have some exciting options. maybe katsidis would be best to establish him - a make or break fight maybe - as an attraction in manchester. despite the WBC elim news i think the katsidis fight is the tempting, tasty one.
I actually think a fight with Estrada, even though he is a not known, but the promotion angle of this being an eliminator would really see what Murray is like as an attraction.
If Murray proves himself to be a fighter capable of filling big halls/arena's, then I see a series of fringe fighters (David Diaz maybe) to line everyones pockets, before a make or break one.
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
yeah it might depend on who his promoter is, whether he stays with hennessy or goes with someone else.
katsidis would seem to be the fight with the most to gain, that could bring that something extra out of murray with the big prize in sight. murray's team will have had plenty of chances to dissect katsidis' style, so in terms of preparation katsidis is again the best fight. wheras this estrada is an unknown quantity - no one knows how good or bad, how slick or aggressive, he will be.

Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
Daniel Estrada's record looks pretty impressive! He'd be no walk in the park for murray i dont think.23-1-1 with 19ko's!Lost one fight early on in his career to an unbeaten fighter but has been performing since. He's also only 25 so he's fresh.
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
Witter will never get the chance to fight either Hatton.winkveron wrote:What about Witter vs M. Hatton & Murray vs. Katsidis? With a few Manchester fighters on the undercard.
None of Hennessy's boxers, excluding Froch, have the pull that Warren's do, due to Warren's having all the recent Olympic & ABA glory.
If Murray was to get a world title shot, I've got a feeling he'd have to travel abroad for it anyway. That's just a hunch!
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
It's more a question of- is he popular enough to justify booking him in a a venue that size.Spud wrote:In answer to the question in the thread title - absolutely.

Yep!!! have to agree with that one and couple that with getting fighters on the bill which are ticket sellers - a start point would be to black curtain off the arena - W arren did it with Hatton.whicker wrote:It's more a question of- is he popular enough to justify booking him in a a venue that size.Spud wrote:In answer to the question in the thread title - absolutely.

I think its one great big f*ck up that Murray is not being promoted as he should - I am surprised because despite the criticisms on here I highly rate Meaty Mick Hennessy and I cannot understand why big noises are not being made about Murray.
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
Thing is, as yet, he's not fought any really notable opponents- he's faced and beaten some decent level domestic opponents, for sure, but not sure as yet if he would be a big enough draw.Spud wrote:Yep!!! have to agree with that one and couple that with getting fighters on the bill which are ticket sellers - a start point would be to black curtain off the arena - W arren did it with Hatton.whicker wrote:It's more a question of- is he popular enough to justify booking him in a a venue that size.Spud wrote:In answer to the question in the thread title - absolutely.

His next opponent is nothing special, too.
I think they would need a very well known and good opponent to sell him at the MEN.
Would be a good fight, too.

Ugh, come on Spud, you have supposedly worked for boxing promotions, so use your brain for once in your life.
Can Murray sell enough tickets to make a profit from running a show at the MEN? (expensive rent)
almost certainly not
so why do it, then?
What have you spent all these years, working for boxing promoters, doing?
actually, please dont answer that.
Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
i think you'd have to see what happens after he hopefully defends his european title in emphatic fashion in manchester. see what can be built up from that. murray has the style and ability, and the manchester fans will support their fighters.
if he was going to fight at the MEN then it would have helped if all his title fights - british and european - had been in manchester.
honestly, how many current british boxers actually could headline there?
sadly the guys that can/could headline there - namely hatton - did not have any crowd pleasing manchester fighters on the undercard. there was no one to pass the torch to. i think mitchell did, but i believe that was a stacked, quality show and he imploded spectacularly.

Re: Is Murray ready for the M.E.N. Arena?
Also, at the MEN, they often close off the top section/tier for smaller shows. One of the Khan SKY PPVs was like that.
I don't think Murray could really go from Altringham leisure centre to the MEN right now.

spud just because you repeat the same argument 100 times, it doesn't get any more effective by the hundredth, cue 'meaty mick/ believe it or not i respect him/ john murray badly promoted/blah blah blah'
