Qualification for the youth olympics is limited to 66 boxers as follows

1 All the medalists from the youth world championships
44 Boxers
2 2 from the hosts Singapore
2 Boxers
3 20 boxers nominated by the various National Olympic commitees and accepted by the organisation body.In effect most countries will get one boxer.
As the USA did not attend the world championships they were probably restricted to one entry.

1st of all, it is not the world championships. It is the 1st Youth (U-19) Olympics in Singapore, not China. Yes the US team did not go to Baku for the youth worlds because of the volcano and the youth worlds were the qualifier for the Youth Olympics. AIBA wanted to have USA represented at the Youth Olympics so they asked USA Boxing to send a heavyweight so that is how Joshua Temple got selected to go.

This has happened for many years. That is just how it is . It happened to me in 1990. We faught in the under-19 championships and they only took 1 fighter Stevie Johnson and he won so lets wish Joshua well.

We are very lucky that AIBA allowed us the one spot since we weren't able to qualify normally. The one spot wasn't a USA Boxing decision - it was given to us by AIBA. :TU:

That´s not true. The US sent six boxers ro the 1990 World Juniors and Steve Johnston didn´t win - he got silver after losing the final to cuban Hector Vinent. He was the only american to medal. Check out http://www.amateur-boxing.strefa.pl/Cha ... s1990.html for more details.
