Alan Minter- Steve Collins

Post by Bricks »

Just imagine this fight taking place in 1978 at Wembley. The prejudiced southpaw englishman with talent against the hard irishman who could punch and fight with anyone.

If this had taken place in Wembley Stadium in the late 70's it would have been a guaranteed 50,000 sell out and the atmosphere would have been ugly and intimidating ringside. The IRA were bombing London in the 70's and 80's killing and maiming hundreds. Conversely innocent irish men and women were being imprisoned by a corrupt police eager to show results. The British army were committing atrocities in Ireland. You get the picture

Before the fight Minter would say he wouldnt let a "Pikey bastard" beat him, and his supporters would riot before the fight.

I predict it would be a fifteen round war, a bloodied Minter would steal a hard fought points decision and at the end the crowd would throw bottles into the ring.

WHo do you think would win?

Minter was a tough nut but he also had great boxing ability, and the latter separates him from the relentless but one-dimensional Collins, who would have struggled with the weight. Minter, a natural middleweight, beat Kevin Finnegan three times, a man described by Mickey Duff as "gifted", so he would have enough to outscore Collins, although you can bet your life that Collins would be sticking the nut in.

I'm probably in the minority here but I like Collins in this one. Both Antuofermo and Hamsho gave Minter plenty of problems and Collins was as good as these two if not better. Collins was stronger at super middle but I still think he would pull this one out. Would'nt be easy for either man.

If it's 1978, Minter slaughters the 14 year old Collins.

Great fight, this would've been a war. I like Minter by a few points but his tendency to cut badly would always be a danger vs a strongman like Collins.,

That's quite a picture you painted there Mugabi

At middleweight, I'd expect Minter to beat Collins by a close points decision. 'Twud be one heck of a scrap though.

Nevertheless a clear win for Minter. Let's not start making excuses for the boy.

Glad to see someone else caught on to the fact that a fight taking place in 1978 wouldn't make sense due to Collins being 14 years old at the time.
Mugabi was obviously trying to create a hypothetical match up.

Barry this place runs on hypothetical matchups. You know that. Gee if we only were allowed to match up guys who fought in the same era this place sure would be poorer for it.
Next time someone starts a Ali V Tyson matchup I will be a jackass and butt in and say but when Tyson was champ Ali was pushing 46. :DD :box:

Minter would have started the fight trying to box in that awkward southpaw style of his.He would win the first four rounds boxing smoothly and have a permanent smirk on his face. Collins would persevere charging forward and only manage to win the sixth. In the seventh Collins would accidentally butt Minter and a waterfall of blood would explode down the right side of his face down his union jack trunks. Enraged Minter would gesture Collins in, the same way he did Hagler, and the brawl would start and Collins would take the round as well as the next 3 rounds as the crowd would be driven into greater frenzy. The Minter elements in the crowd would be enraged at the tide turning on what they saw as an illegal headbutt by " the pikey bbastard" and fights would break out in the crowd between rival supporters. After a rousing 11th round where Minter buckles Collins legs, Minter would refuse to sit down between rounds and instead would stand on the apron rousing his rabid support even more. Harry Carpenter would comment to the live home audience "these are disgraceful scenes". In the 12th the British Board of Control would consider having the fight abandoned due to the fights breaking out in the crowd and the general unruliness of the crowd. The police commissioner would advise that would start a riot. Mickey Duff would shout out from ringside "isnt that what we've fukcking got already". Collins would rally in the 13th and 14th, as the police would call in for the riot vans and reinforcements. In the 15th Minter would mount a desperate rally, the blood on his face caked into a grotesque crusty mask, looking more and more like the man who wouldnt need any makeup if he ever decided to become an actor and play the elephant man after his ring career was over. As the fight came to an end Collins would be almost out on his feet under Minter's brave remorseless barrage. Just as the bell rang, Minter and Collins would have to be seperated as Minter kept punching. The referee would lift Minters hand. Simultaneously the extra police reinforcements would charge into the area from the street and start to batter the crowd with batons and riot shields to calm them down like a master would beat an unruly dog. "This is the death of British Boxing" Harry Carpenter would sign off as a bottle smashed within 3 inches of his seat at ringside.
