Brian Hughes has produced some really nice boxers in his time and is a gent. McCracken is very experienced and calm. Joe G and Lee Beard have both made a dent in recent times too. Tony Simms has done decent job with fighters, as have the Ingles.
I suppose it's down to the individual really as to whom the best coach is for you.

You only get to pick if you're any good in the 1st place. Some of the lads with the very good trainers have been international amateurs, ABA finalists etc. If you've had 20 odd amateur bouts where you won one lost one and are looking for an income from boxing; things will be hard and you won't be able to choose an elite trainer (a trainer that trains high class boxers).

I like Bob Shannon as a trainer, he's old school, in the corner and from what i've read his training is tough stuff. All his boxers have different styles and are as fit as a butchers dog. Very good and under-rated trainer imo

I think alot depends on the attitudes of both the boxer and trainer to gel, ie you might have a Teddy Atlas training a top prospect but that prospect doesnt take in what hes shown or they dont gel with each other so they dont get very much out of each other. On the flip side there could be a novice Am turning pro with Teddy and he real tries in training and listens none stop and keeps improving. Im a lucky guy in I belive my boxers listen and learn everyday

Bob shannon - fitness is half the fight and that guy goes for military style fitness. He's done great work with Matt Hatton.

What about the other half??kingfinn wrote:Bob shannon - fitness is half the fight and that guy goes for military style fitness. He's done great work with Matt Hatton.
Yes I completely agree - Matthew Hatton has done fabuously well - some will argue overachieved.
But I simply do not rate Shannon above:
Gallagher
Farnell
McCracken
And certainly nowhere near Brendan

Re: Who is the best Trainer In Uk(Manchester)
I don't know much about the other trainers but I have been under a few over the years. I was working in Manchester for a few weeks a couple of years ago and I decided I would do a bit of trainning while I was there. I ended up in Shannon gyms just outside the city centre. I learned more in a few weeks with him than what I did with others in years. Maybe we just clicked, I don't know. He looks at your physhical make up and helps you to develop your style round it. His enthusiasm is great, he works hard with the guys and he makes sure you get at least ten minutes of his attention even if your not from his gym. Don't get me wrong I have disagreed with some of his comments to fighters in the corner but nobody is perfect.Spud wrote:What about the other half??kingfinn wrote:Bob shannon - fitness is half the fight and that guy goes for military style fitness. I hear that Farnell fella is a waste'o'space!
His gym is flithy, his fighters are crap and he hasnt a clue what he's doing.
Best off avoided me thinks.
If that thread title wasnt aimed at drawing out a virtual squabble then my name isnt Seanie Murphy O'Leary!

Re: Who is the best Trainer In Uk(Manchester)
Am I the only one one who can see that Matthew Hatton's improvement of late is more to do with the work he has done with Lee Beard than Bob Shannon. Bob is a great trainer and will have made some tweaks but Matthew was at championship level before Bob came in.kingfinn wrote:Bob shannon - fitness is half the fight and that guy goes for military style fitness. Re: Who is the best Trainer In Uk(Manchester)
farnell is not only one of the best trainers in manchester but also one of the best trainers in the whole of the uk.
i have seen many trainers over the years and i rate arnie as 1 of the very best.
when he was a pro he was the sort of fighter who would go in all guns blazing and not really have a boxing plan, more of a brawler than a boxer, but as a trainer he is the complete opposite. he works all aspects of the game, especially defense and game plans.
he has a great stable at the min and certainly has some possible future world champs, with names like gavin, bellew, hall, heffron, and buttler all in the gym helping each other out, there is no reason why arnie cant have a number of successful champions.
i know for a fact that frankie gavin and tony bellew could have went with almost any trainer they wanted but after spending just a day in arnies gym and seeing what farnell has to offer, they chose him and i believe that speaks volumes for arnies ability as a trainer.
