Heavyweights down under!
Heavyweights down under!
So tomorrow nights televised card see's Alex Leapai vs Owen Beck, how do we see this 1 going?
Me, I see 2 outcomes, 1st, Leapai knocks out Beck really early, or the 2nd alternative is Alex will have his moments but If Beck can withstand the early barrage can eek a PTS decision.
On another note i titled the thread Heavyweights down under, so as to categorize the discussion for all Heavy s in this region.
Whats happened to all the heavys this year, the only bloke to make a splash is Leapai with his win over Walker.
I understand Kirby has a serious injury, and Hoppa/Mirovic finished, but theres still Solo, De Mori,Whitehead,Wilson and Funaki that haven't fired shots this year(Whitehead Vs Wilson next week).
Across the pond we've seen Tua win unimpressively against a very inactive Ahunya and get a gift against Barrett.
Camerons dropped down to Cruiser..good move i believe, and of course Welliver seems to have cemented himself as a Kiwi resident and seems to be raising the bar on his level of competition. Tai doesn't look like he will get a decent win on his resume again...so he's finished.
And theres a bloke floating around in Japan called Okhello thats not doing much, but recieve's gifts.
Why are these guys not fighting each other?
Whats going on this year, the last couple of years have been great exposure in this region, and this year it's all dropped off.

Re: Heavyweights down under!
I hope Leapai wins early and in a spectacular fashion, If he can sort out his stamina I see him going places! He's certainly not scared of anyone and you don't die wondering watching his fights!!! Beck is a good level opponent aswell!
Re: Heavyweights down under!
Yeah i tend to agree about alex, he's only 6ft and carries extra weight and Gass's pretty easily.
I think he has a decent jab which he demonstrated against Cronje, but has never used it since.
I hope we see a new kit of punch's in this fight as well, I can almost pick when that overhand is coming, if you don't pick it..it's goodnight, but a low percentage punch to rely on.

Re: Heavyweights down under!
Would be great to see Leapai use some head movement tonight!!
Re: Heavyweights down under!
I think Leapai has not met anyone who has the class of Beck, however in his recent fights he has now crossed into journeyman status. I see a KO for Alex in the early rounds.
It is very disapointing not to see the heavies fighting each other, I think there is too much respect amongst all of them. What needs to happen is to have a Prizefighter event for these guys with a shot at the Aussie title and a ton of money for the winner. That what the heavies need right now.
As for this evening. Really looking forward to seeing some action on TV after a very long layoff. After the PPV disaters let the games begin and we can look forward to a decent nights boxing, instead of the usual circus we have been treated to. Lets hope for a good nights viewing.

Re: Heavyweights down under!
It dropped off this year cos i'm not around!ha ha lmao!
Re: Heavyweights down under!
on becks form i think leapai needs to ko him within 5 rounds to look good properly. but as long as he wins i think it will be a good effort.
haumono back in training after breaking his arm as far as i can remember.
hopefully hoppa continues as if he comes in fit he has a chance against most opponents and is always looking for a big ko.
wilson fighting whitehead soon. wilson cut his hand open, i think is why he was off.
a few up and comers who will meet sooner or later or face guys like hoppa etc.

Now it gets a little more interesting with Kali Meehan fighting on Fox in September, he's also scheduled to fight in October in the states.

Re: Heavyweights down under!
Leapai will probably KO Beck and it should not be as difficult as the Walker fight was. Although Walker suffered a couple of defeats shortly before his bout with Leapai, it was obvious he was trying to win these fights. In Beck's most recent bout, it was obvious he was only there for a pay check. Walker is also a much harder puncher than Beck is.
I'm glad to see that Meehan is continuing on and already has a fight scheduled with a decent opponent. He still has enough left in him to beat some good opponents. I would like to see Leapai-Meehan if they both win their next bouts. That would surely be a great fight. Perhaps the winner could take on Tua, that is of course if the fight ever happend!

Which arm?

Re: Heavyweights down under!
It could be a really good fight between Leapai and Meehan, I think if both impress enough on there televised cards, it could do PPV.
At this point i really want to see Meehan's fight and i also want to see if Alex has improved since his last fight.
But definitely would benefit both, and who knows maybe an eliminator to fight Tua.

Re: Heavyweights down under!
P.S Good luck to leapai, Wreck BECK and get the paycheck!
Re: Heavyweights down under!
I forgot this was on and turned on the TV just in time to see the referee holding Alex's arm up.
Was "What the Heck" a wreck? KOed in 6! Third straight stoppage loss, might be time for the Jamaican to think of another line of work.

Re: Heavyweights down under!
Good on Alex. Didnt see the fight though just red the last post.
Re: Heavyweights down under!
alex has improved, even usin a left jab at times, work rate was good as well
Re: Heavyweights down under!
Well done to Alex, Great win. But how does Alex get these fights and Don king promo Mark De Mori cant get a fight?.
Re: Heavyweights down under!
Alex got a good 6 rounds in tonight, Beck was more than a worthy opponent, i haven't been a fan of these stoppages, Beck was clearly hurt but i thought he'd done enough in the fight to deserve maybe a standing 8, a chance at least to get back into it.
The Jab was back, but the head didn't move as much, i think Alex will watch the fight and see how well Beck moved his head.
A really good win for Alex and he's proven that he's 1 of the best here easily, he's really progressing well.
Alex stated after the fight that he's fighting Danny Williams in a month on Mundine's card, not a bad 3 months of active boxing, Walker,Beck and Williams.
Noel Thornberry is doing a good job, and whoever's managing him a few other heavys should get on board, look at the resume Leapai's piling up.

Re: Heavyweights down under!
Good effort from Alex, He was behind at the time of the stoppage though. And will struggle against a young fit opponent who isn't past his prime.
Still a good win against a dangerous opponent.

Re: Heavyweights down under!
According to someone on the British & Irish forum who is close to Williams, he is not coming back and has again turned down an offer from Leapai...
Re: Heavyweights down under!
Having been stopped in a three round fight in his last outing, it would be no surprise if Williams calls it quits.
Re: Heavyweights down under!
dawg and ben said it pretty well
Re: Heavyweights down under!
Also agree with Dawg & Ben. Alex was fitter and showed more than against Walker. Beck was not a shot fighter, just an unfit one. Like the travis Walker fight in my view it should not have been stopped, though Alex was on top.
What was up with Ryan Langham? King was enthusiastic but if someone had told you Langham was 12-1 you just would not have believed it . He showed absolutely nothing and appeared to lack commitment to the task. Just my view anyway

Re: Heavyweights down under!
Yeah the entire night was full of upsets.....Well if you consider Olarte KOing Hannan an upset, i was going to put this in Boxrec syndicate as a tip.
Langham may have just realized his potential last night, it was very similar to the Lenny Zappa fight, except that Lenny connected properly and left Langham unconscious. Defiantly a lack of application from Langham who can fight.
The rest of the card was not Fox worthy, except for the 2 guys on debut.
