Pascal Beats Dawson

Post by Autobarn »

funny how these so called brilliant pure boxers seem to clam up when they get hurt or when someone with impressive athletic abilities takes the fight to them. as was the case with hopkins and taylor, for instance. last night's fight between pascal and dawson was more exciting than that, for sure. dawson hurt a few times, dawson well behind staggering pascal, and then the fight stopped on a technical decision.

good to see a warrior and a go-getter like pascal have some success. yes he might be an overachiever, yes things turned out alright for him after the clash of heads left dawson unable to continue. but what pleases me is that pascal - who's been in 4 thrilling fights now - can use his momentum to head towards a massive all canadian obout with lucian bute. bute is the draw, so hopefully they can come to a deal - to fight for pascal's light heavyweight titles. bute has no one to fight at super middleweight.

for a british angle, it looks good for froch, who beat pascal at super middleweight, who had the gumption to try and take the fight from pascal from the very start. super 6 doesn't seem to be working out for froch, and due to the punishment and hard schedule, some can see a disaster ahead of him vs arthur abraham. if it goes wrong for froch, let's consider he has a win over the current WBC and ring mag 175 champ pascal. and also, maybe there will be a piece of that action for froch, due to pascal wanting a revenge match.

honestly, the light heavy fights from canada - pascal v dawson, pascal v diaconu 1 and 2 and hopefully bute-pascal - are every bit as important and impressive as the super 6.

thanks. they were going to do it in canada at one point, weren't they. that might have been interesting, perhaps a bridge to froch fighting in canada at 175 pounds.

my main point, froch beat a very underrated fighter to win the WBC title at 168. i recall calzaghe dismissing pascal as rubbish or garbage.

good to see a fast fighter who doesn't run. pascal's winning streak may not go on too much longer, but he deserves the bute fight, and i think the all canadian rivalry would be better than any of our domestic fights.

I think a lot of your points are spot on 'Barn' and I too suspect that when Froch's participation in the Super Six is ended we'll see him moving up in weight to rematch with Pascal should the Bute fight not come off (or if Pascal wins that).

Froch said he had promised it to him, and with Pascal's wins I can certainly see him taking it in Canada.

I think it also shows how underrated Froch is, the yanks and some others love slagging him off, but the fact is Carl's record in the cold light of day is a very good one. I don't see losing to a desperate Kessler in Denmark as a big negative, not when considering Froch did well in the fight imo.

Some fights see the loser look exposed (Pavlik against Hopkins, Dawson vs Pascal etc) but I dont think anyone thought anything different of Froch in terms of what he brings to the table after he lost the belt to Kessler.

With regards Pascal's win, I was going to put a box of loot on him, but whenever i do i always jinx the fight !

I always get the feeling that every single one of 'Gary Shaw's next big thing' fighters are lacking the minerals and have not been proved wrong once to date.

Lacy was the new Mike Tyson, yet was dusted. Chad is better than Lacy, but has a glaring lack of offence and looks extremely suspect when taking an average power shot.

Against a fighter who wouldn't let him off the hook, Dawson would have been blasted out. Perhaps Tarvouris Cloud will also batter Dawson in due course.

But I get the feeling that Dawson will look to bore everyone to death with a rematch with Pascal.

it would be effing amazing if pascal and bute fight.

would bute take the risk up at 175? would he demand some kind of catchweight shite? will he say, "i can fight the brinkleys of the world to a packed house" or will HBO push him towards jean pascal?

I'd imagine there will be some 'inside information' (aka made up shite) from his fans on here about how Pascal got offered the fight twice and turned it down and it is therefore acceptable for him to fight Mads Larsen as his voluntary defence instead of Pascal, Pavlik, Jermaine Taylor or the guys who drop out of the Super 6.

In all seriousness I think Bute is making the 168 limit fairly easily and there ARE fights for him to take at Supermiddleweight that are big fights. Likewise Pascal now has options for really big fights at Light heavyweight against the guys there so while some might see it as an obvious fight to happen I'd suggest it might not be.

Pascal has proved his worth as a World class fighter tho so all the rubbish from the Froch haters about how he beat a nobody for the Vacant title will have to stop. I haven't seen the fight at all tho, was there any controversy in the decision at all? Any knockdowns etc?

I don't think it was controversial as the headclash was clearly accidental and Dawson's eye closed up straight away from the swelling.

Dawson had Pascal rocking a bit, but didn't look like seriously stopping him given the shots he was trying to throw imo, it looked more like desperation in knowing he was a mile behind on points.

He wasn't a mile behind.

Had the last round gone ahead, and he won it, two of the scorecards would have given him 114-115 (ie, he lost, by by just one round.)

He he scored a knockdown in the never-happened round 12, then the fight would have been a draw.

and if he knocked him out, he wouldn't have needed the scorecards.

if if if - he was well behind on the cards.

.. And what if pascal knocked him out?

No way was pascal going down, whereas Dawson was shook to his boots even when fresh.

i suppose there will be demand for a dawson rematch because you just don't know what would have happened. dawson went all out, sort of, hurt pascal, but it hink after that dawson could really have gassed and we know all about how pascal can roar back.

apparently they're expecting it to have done 500,000 PPVs in canada, so the rematch itself will be a big fight.

but it's not an immediate rematch, and i felt that pascal could try and land a far more attractive bute fight. to be honest, while i respect bute's style change since the andrade "accident" i think he's happy to continue collecting easy HBO paychecks while filling out that arena. IF he's allowed to get away with this, he'll probably pick on an older name in a few years' time.

what gives me hope is how aggressively HBO are matching fighters, ranging from the light welters (excepting khan) to middleweights. and how pascal may have become an asset to HBO after yet another entertaining showing. the tumbling block is that pascal has taken so many risks and emerged as the true light heavyweight champ. but that his drawing power maybe isn't in proportion to what he's left in the ring, what he's done. by contrast you have bute, constantly fighting guys who are beneath him, and getting bigger crowds. it will be interesting to see the ratings both get on HBO, who gets the better. there is a one fight window for it to happen, but there might be too much to sort out in such a short time.

bute does seem a bit of a misfit champ, part of nothing big, neither the super 6 at his own weight or the big canadian fights at his own weight. let's see if he wants to be a canadian version of a "sports network" (remember them?) fighter.
