Tampa fights
Quintero, a Cuban, made his home in Tampa.
Through the late 20s at least, boxing was illegal under Florida State law, though bouts in some cities were held on federal land, army bases and the like.
In 1926-1927, when Manuel Quintero got his start, Tampa was running two weekly shows -- a Friday night show at the local "artillery battery" and a "lesser" show at the Cuban Club on Monday nights in Ybor City, Tampa. This club was affiliated with the Amercian Legion so that is how it was permitted to run fight cards without running afoul of the state ban. I suspect most of Young Manuel's early bouts were in this club.
