Best boxers, A to Z
Best boxers, A to Z
The Ring is currently doing this - the best boxers ever through the alphabet. I thought it might it fun to do in here, going one letter each. Feel free to dispute the choices and add your own pick for the same letter.
I'll start: A - Henry Armstrong (the same as The Ring choice)

I'd put Hiroyuki Ebihara over anyone from the above list. One of the most underrated Flyweights of all time, with an already excellent record lessened by questionable/outright corrupt decisions, namely to Kingpetch in the rematch, and in his fights with Accavallo.

For E I've got Flash Elorde over any mentioned.
Since nobody did H, I'll swiftly mention Hearns, Holmes, Hagler, Harada & Hopkins.
I got nothing for I, maybe it's a list where Ibeabuchi isn't overrated.
I'd take Jack Johnson & Roy Jones over Jack.
Langford over either leonard.
O = Olivares or Carlos Ortiz. With a shout to Mike O'Dowd, really underrated old time great.
Very difficult exercise, you know you're missing someone at every turn.

Leonard was indeed a Wizard, not sure how ghetto he was. I have him top 10 all time so I'm not really complaining. But Langford's resume is just out of this world. It's crazy to think that if you matched the two up, Sam would have the best win at Lightweight.

For "I", I'll throw out Guts Ishimatsu, actually.
For "M" I'd have Packey McFarland, followed closely by Moore. For "J" I'd have Eder Jofre. Langford, followed by Benny Leonard for "L". For "O" I'd agree with Ortiz.
Next up: P-Willie Pep

Ioka gave Yuh some tough fights at the end of his career, no doubt about it. Otherwise he wasn't up to much, really. Ibarra, whilst having a somewhat suspect chin, was an excellent pure boxer. Against the right kind of fighter he could look magnificent, as shown in his wins over some of the best Flyweights of the era in Betulio Gonzalez and Santos Laciar. Those wins alone far outstripe anything Ioka ever accomplished.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Good call on Jofre.

Yeah, a prime version no less. I think Gonzalez was starting to slip a bit by the time Ibarra out-boxed him, though still a very good fighter.
Anyways, I don't think there's much to argue on "R".

"U" is a tough one, but I'll go with Alfredo Urbina for now.
