Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
Cleverly (if he wins his next fight) says he wants to go after Pascal:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/8919109.stm
Has Nathan got a shot against Pascal and if he did get it and win, could we be looking at a Cleverly-Froch fight somewhere down the line?

A Wazza fighter calling out a top drawer champion? Whatever next.
If by some bizarre twist of circumstance it happened Nathan wouldn't win it. No fricking way.

Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
He needs to shut up, he's not as good as he thinks he is. He's an Enzo waiting to happen...
Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
my take on cleverly is he's a good fighter who has delivered given the opportunity at commonwealth, domestic and euro level. however, he has mostly been handed defense deficient fighters for vacant titles and underpowered commonwealth challengers. cleverly has applied good pressure, shown good handspeed and body punching. i just think this style might not work against someone who will hit him hard back. can nathan adapt his style, will it be natural for him to do so? not to say he can't do it, mind. clev has a good size advantage over many fighters but look how far he leans down/forward. he has a john murray pressure style but doesn't have the physical presence that murray brings to his lightweight battles.
pascal must be doing well. not only are the big guns at 175 queueing up to fight him, as well as former WBC super middle champ carl froch, but he's also on nathan cleverly's radar!

tend to agree but you but you can only beat whats put in front of you. Murat is definitely a test.Autobarn wrote:my take on cleverly is he's a good fighter who has delivered given the opportunity at commonwealth, domestic and euro level. however, he has mostly been handed defense deficient fighters for vacant titles and underpowered commonwealth challengers. cleverly has applied good pressure, shown good handspeed and body punching. i just think this style might not work against someone who will hit him hard back. can nathan adapt his style, will it be natural for him to do so? not to say he can't do it, mind. clev has a good size advantage over many fighters but look how far he leans down/forward. he has a john murray pressure style but doesn't have the physical presence that murray brings to his lightweight battles.

Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
He was shipping right hands against Brancalion, wait till he gets in with a live opponent, he will be found out soon enough imo.
Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
Sorry but he shows respect to both fighters in the interview and even says if he looses on the 18th it is back t the drawing board?Roars Like Me wrote:He needs to shut up, he's not as good as he thinks he is. He's an Enzo waiting to happen...
Don't see what the problem is myself. You say he should shut up, that would make a GREAT interview him saying nothing
Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
I think Pascal would beat Cleverly very clearly. Pascal is much faster and more physically gifted, he probably hits harder, and has been in with elite fighters at 168 and 175, and he has had success against them.doctorboxing wrote:Cleverly (if he wins his next fight) says he wants to go after Pascal:

Cleverly is rated quite highly for someone who has only been in it with domestic level fighters and his best win came over Brancalion, someone who the average champion Brahmer dropped four times in 83 seconds. Murat is a decent fighter, arguably top ten in the world, but there is a huge gap between him and Pascal. If Cleverly beats Murat, I would like to see him in with a top 15 fighter who has power. I still have doubts about Cleverly's beard...
Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
How dare a young, talented, ambitious boxer talk about fighting the big boys in his division. Cleverly should be utterly ashamed of himself.

Er, Benn-McLellan - Benn was the champion. McClellan was moving up in weight.
Bruno-Tyson - Bruno was the champion.
So you got me on Hatton. One out of three ain't bad.

I don't give a shyte about if the interview goes well or not. He's good boxer yes and I can see you're welsh so you bound to stick up for him and feel a bit annoyed. I just can't see him beating Pascal now or in a couple of yearstaffytoon wrote:Sorry but he shows respect to both fighters in the interview and even says if he looses on the 18th it is back t the drawing board?Roars Like Me wrote:He needs to shut up, he's not as good as he thinks he is. 3 out of 3.Mclellan was a ridiculous price to win inside a round.Tyson was also a big favourite.deadpan wrote:Er, Benn-McLellan - Benn was the champion. McClellan was moving up in weight.

Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
murat is quite a good fighter. there should be lots of body punches thrown. if cleverly wins he's a legitimate contender, no doubt. could be a quality fight. murat takes lots of breaks like abraham so this is where cleverly can back him up and steal the rounds.robpalmer135 wrote:tend to agree but you but you can only beat whats put in front of you. murat has come a long way from a rubbish night he had on a spanish card leading steve holdsworth to say "he's going absolutely nowhere." i don't think he's world title material and he has had slip ups along the way (the draw with sanavia, avenged) but that narrow win over campillo looks good now.
Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
It's way too soon for Cleverly to be speaking about facing Pascal. Firstly, as others have pointed out he needs to get past Murat and then get some top level experience. A possible schedule of fights in which he could build up to facing Pascal are:
Murat
Erdei
Braehmer
Cloud
Pascal
He needs to face guys who are both quick and hit hard before taking on Pascal and Cloud would be a huge test in about a year before facing Pascal

Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
I think Clev has looked great to date. His power seems to be coming through (6 ko's on the spin now) and he is a decent height and size for the division. I just want to see him in fights where he doesn't have it all his own way i.e. He's had good matchmaking to date. It's refreshing he went for the domestic and European titles, rather than bogus international titles.
My only fear is, there are some really strong guys at the weight class. Pascal is built like a proverbial garden toilet. Cloud is also a big unit.
Past round 6 it could get very daunting for him when they have eaten his flurries and are still throwing their own bombs back.
I think a big tough Ovill McKenzie type opponent would give him some rounds. Then maybe look at Chris Henry.
Anyone see Chris Henry's win over Hugo Garay?
Garay outclassed Braehmer, but Henry put him away in the first round amidst strange circumstances.

Henry is also a good shout as he is a good American prospect and a win over him would increase Cleverly's standing in the States. I think Braehmer would be an excellent learning fight for him and would be a real gauge of how far advanced he currently is.G0mez wrote:I think Clev has looked great to date. Re: Nathan Cleverly wants Pascal
On the evidence so far, Cleverly is a very tidy operator. Importantly, he has been improving with every fight and now he is 100% concentrated on boxing, this should only bring him on further.
I think he`ll have his hands full with Murat (still not totally convinced that Murat won`t pull out with injury before the fight). Assuming the fight does take place, Murat and his handlers must fancy the job as it is not often you get one of the top German prospects to fight on foreign soil for the European title.
Provided he get`s past Murat, there is no way I would put him in with Pascal just now. Pascal has proven himself to be a genuine hard man, with a lot of ability to back it up. His whiskers are Frochesque and he is not afraid to get into the trenches and slug it out with the big hitters.
Although no real reason to doubt it, there is something about the build of cleverly and the way he carries his head, that makes me think his chin may be an issue with a decent hitter.
Hope I`m wrong of course, as he is a nice lad and one of the best prospects that we have in the UK.
Keep him away from Cloud :)

I think Cleverly is a great talent, and has all the skills to go to the top, think he has too much for murat.. and if he shows good defence against braehmer he will win.

One step at a time for the kid. Seeing him against Murat will give us a few more ideas his potential.
